Medicare Advantage vs Medicare Supplement is the biggest questions seniors have when it comes to filling in the gaps left by Original Medicare.
Everyone has an opinion on whether a Medicare Advantage plan is better or worse than a Medicare Supplement plan.
There are a lot of myths out there so we go over the Pros and Cons of both a Medicare Advantage Plan and a Medicare Supplement Plan G. We keep things transparent and avoid exaggerating the reality of these two plans.

Seriously, I’m well educated, but most info I’ve read and even watched in videos is poorly laid out or downright misleading. Your videos (I’ve watched 2 so far) are the most accurate, truthful, and helpful that I’ve seen anywhere. Thanks for expressing your integrity and intelligence for the benefit of others. These ought to be embedded in the official Medicare website.

Hi! I am an agent in Washington and I found your video by chance. I'll admit that I was ready to find something wrong with your information and point it out but you are actually honest and very open about all of the nuances. Great job! It's nice to see other agents doing the right thing and not being super shady.

So are you connected to the bulk spam calls by the hundreds pushing advantage plans? Collecting massive bulk commissions tricking folks into advantage plans? They're relentless vultures, liars and even attempt to tell you you can get all these quirks of dental, vision etc, oddly they ignore telling you of the expensive co pays and pre authorizations and how many times they reject coverage when you really need it. So even when you tell them you have a supplemental plan they try to trick you into thinking you can have both. I hope you are true and honest.

I have been on an Advantage Plan for years and am very pleased. My out of pocket is low and I have wonderful doctors. My medication is by mail and my copay is zero expect for one medication. In case I need a prescription immediately the cost is still not high at the local pharmacy, and I still have my vision and dental. I personally think the PPO plan is the best. Your video was still informative.

I have had Kaiser Advantage for 10 years. Apart from Part B, the most I have spent in any year is $400. But the real reason I like it is that it is an integrated system so nothing falls through the cracks and I don't have to make endless visits all over the place. The staff are salaried so there is no fee for service; no unnecessary procedures or visits; a lot of things are handled online or over the phone. I was hospitalized in England and Kaiser reimbursed me for the entire cost. As a retired MD (no, I didn't work for Kaiser) they get my vote.

My dad had Kaiser insurance. I remember him having me take him in for severe chest pains. They examined him and sent him home with antigas and an appointment to come in for tests. I took him home. The next morning my sister went over to visit him. When he didn't answer the door she sent her 6 year old son through a window. He found his grandpa lying on the floor, dead from a massive heart attack. Of course, that is no reflection on modern day Kaiser. That happened 45 years ago. Still, you can understand my reluctance to trust Kaiser.

Thank you for giving such a great comparison of the two. I have to do this day in and day out with my patients as a Solid Organ Transplant Financial Counselor. I battle up against so many Medicare Agents who push for Advantage plans when that is not always what is best for Transplant patients, especially when it comes to anti-rejection drugs. Good luck. My friend recently died from leukemia, 66 yrs old. He spent most of his last couple years in bed mostly fighting the appeals process for all the rejected authorizations and he needed for coverage and never did get the full treatments available that may have saved his life. He died last spring home in bed still fighting long drawn out appeals with the insurance company. Insurance company won, outlasted him and the insurance company saved their profits. Even tried to switch to medigap but was rejected over and over. Kind of like trying to get car insurance after you wrecked your car.

If the US had single-payer Medicare For All, you would have a single card, a single login. You would have no-cost medical care, emergency care, doctor care, specialist care, hospital care, dental care, hearing care, vision care, long term care, nursing home care (none of the medicare plans cover nursing homes), mental care, dementia care, prescription drugs, and so on. There would be no denial or delay of coverage which we see with corporate healthcare where they deny and you resubmit multiple times. The best least costly of all worlds is single-payer M4A.

No matter what I said he tried to steer me to advantage so a lot of brokers can't be trusted I left with a sour taste in my mouth and 3 brochures on advantage plans and none on supplements HA.HA.HA> thanks for your straightforward info and by the way our premiums in fl are way more than other states so im probably stuck with advantage anything with that much adverts is always a too good to be true situation

Florida is expensive. High Deductible Plan G is quite popular in Florida. Ya, if someone only presents one option, that's usually a red flag unless, as an example, someone lives in an area that doesn't have Advantage plans, then only presenting supplement makes sense. Also, it is illegal to put someone who is on Medicaid on a supplement plan, so Advantage is presented. Outside of that, should be mentioning both.

It is important to note prescription drug plan formularies are NOT the same, they don't cover ALL medications and could place a covered drug in totally different tiers. The same prescription could cost $100/m and be subject to the deductible on a plan and cost $0 on another, so just considering the monthly premium isn't enough, whether it is a stand alone PDP or bundled into a $0 premium MAPD. Also, not all PDPs participate in the Insulin Savings Plan.

I'm 86, pretty gosh-darn healthy. I use very VERY few prescriptions if any. Most I actually refuse & I'm still here. Wouldn't I be better off with a low cost Advantage plan than to get the "best" Original Medicare high priced plan?
@Theretirementnerds
@Theretirementnerds Год назад
That's the big question :) It is all about risk tolerance. Would you rather save money now in hopes that nothing goes wrong and have a rainy day fund in case something does happen? Or, would you rather pay the premiums as a sort of forced savings mechanism so that if something does go wrong, you don't need to worry about having an emergency fund. So happy to hear you are so healthy!

I have subscribed to your channel due to the great and simple explanations on this topic of Medicare plans. I have a question on deductibles for Original Medicare Part A. I understand that the deductible for Part A is $1556 in 2022, and has to be payed on each occurrence, maybe two or three times in that year. My question is, would I also have to pay these Part A deductibles with a Medicare Advantage Plan HMO, or are they covered in this Plan?
@Theretirementnerds
@Theretirementnerds Год назад
Great question. Advantage plans replace original Medicare, so that Part A deductible isn't applicable with an Advantage plan. What typically happens is that the Advantage plan has its own daily copays for days 1-5 as an example and then after day 5, the Advantage plan takes care of the rest. Those copays would go towards the Advantage plan Out of Pocket Maximum.

As I'm approaching my 65th birthday, I've been watching many different RU-vid videos from many different channels about Medicare topics, I have to say yours is the best of them. Thank you for all the easy to follow videos and please keep doing them. I have a request for you to make a short video on people that are 65 or older but still have insurance coverage through working spouse or from work. What do they need to do, if any, specifically about eligibility for Medicare gaps G, N etc? Can they still sign up for these gaps after their spouse/work insurance coverage ends? Let's say they stop working or their spouse stops working when they're 67. I understand you have 6 months to apply for these gaps regardless of your health condition when you're applying for Medicare at 65. Thanks in advance for your video on this subject
@Theretirementnerds
@Theretirementnerds Год назад
Sincerely appreciate you saying that! Made our day! We are on the same wavelength because we have that exact video recommendation in our list of videos to shoot, hopefully in the next week or two. The short answer for you now is that you would still be okay to get a supplement plan if you wait past 65. When you lost group benefits from your work or your spouse's work, you have a special election period where you would be able to sign up for Medicare Parts A & B. The Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period is 6 months from your Part B effective date. So if you get Part B at 67... let's say January... you have 6 months to get your supplement plan with guaranteed issue. Does that make sense?

I have my past work insurance as a supplement and while I pay for the supplement with none of the trinkets in your first three blocks of Advantage I don't pay anything at the doctors or hospitals. And there's some hidden costs to trinkets. So if they took all the money for all these agents, all that's for ads and the thousands of phone calls I get and the mailbox full and put it into just medical I wonder want would happen. Wow a bunch of cards, I have medicare and blue cross. People have to decide if Dental and Vision are necessary to them, the gov still pays for a couple cleaning and office visit at the dentist and for eye, you usually buy something that last for years and if you go for eye and they're seeing you for something like eye infection, make sure they report it as medical then it'll be covered.

Related to "managed" care - I heard this, but I do not know if it true: With Supplemental, the company cannot cancel your insurance, even if you are costly to the company, as long as you pay your premiums. With Advantage, the company can cancel your insurance whenever they want (like when you become costly to them) - even if you have always paid your premiums.
@Theretirementnerds
@Theretirementnerds Год назад
Haha no, no. The advantage plan cannot kick you off because they don't want you. If the company offering the plan you are on leaves the state and your plan is no longer available or the plan is shut down because of fraud, you would be notified this is happening with plenty of time to find something else. If either of those happen by the way, you could go on a supplement plan and be guaranteed issue at that point

I don't see many single subject plans for dental, vision, and hearing. Most are a combination of all three. So one card, one login, one price. However, it's also one monetary benefit ($1000, $1500, or $3500) that is used between the three coverages not per coverage.

This is a very informative video as I am doing research for my parents who will both be retiring next year. You are correct; the agent they talked to through their own insurance company was pushing the Advantage plans. This person though was not a total expert in Medicare and worked mostly with health care coverage (when people lost their group plan). I worked in the medical field for a few years and during COVID did a career change so I have a decent understanding of insurance. My Dad is considering an Advantage Plan and my Mom the original Medicare. I am going to direct them to your channel. This is the most honest video I have seen on this subject. So are you saying it's best they find a local agent or can they use someone here on You Tube that works nationally and is licensed in most States? Also, is it best to find an agent that specializes in Medicare? Thank you once again for your hard work and explaining the pro and con so people can make an enlightened decision for themselves.
@Theretirementnerds

We would definitely recommend someone who specializes in Medicare. We, along with other agencies have partners who are licensed in every state, but not physically located in every state. So, if someone is comfortable with a zoom call or phone call, the agent doesn't have to be local. For others, they prefer a local presence, which is totally warranted. Feel free to send me an email to erik@90daysfromretirement.com and happy to help in any way I can, even if it isn't using us. Thank you for watching and your kind words. @Theretirementnerds
@Theretirementnerds Год назад
Hi Jeff, not without consequences. For a supplement plan, there is a window where you can get one without medical underwriting. That window begins on your Part B effective date and ends on the last day of the 6th month after your Part B effective date. If you do not sign up for a supplement plan in this window and choose to get one later, you will have to go through medical underwriting. With an Advantage plan, you have a 7 month initial enrollment window that starts 3 months before your 65th birthday, includes your birthday month, and goes 3 months after your 65th birthday *if you are signing up at 65. If you are working past 65 and come off of your group plan, you have a Special Election Period that is a 63 day window from when you lost group coverage.

The fines or fees involved are how much? It would probably take an actuary to think it through. The premiums are not the bad part of part D, the deductibles with donut hole and catastrophic tiers looks like the worst part of it for those who need prescriptions. I see they are canceling the catastrophic tier soon. Deductible are still high though. Can anyone comment on this?

So we try to help people understand the risk/reward of both options, not just now, but later.

If they don't explain the difference you need to get a different agent and make sure your friends know about this agent. My experience with agents tells me they tend to want to sell the advantage plan but when you ask about plan G they drop the advantage and want to sell you plan G. A good agent should know the difference and explain it to you. I think I might start testing local agents to find how honest they are.

If I knew I would never get sick, I would do an advantage plan. Fortunately I am a bit more realistic and dug into it. I would not take the risks of taking the advantage plan and the pre authorizations, large out of pocket copays and ever having to go through long appeals to get a procedure approved. My 94.00 per mth premium for my N plan and my 240.00 deductible pales in comparison to the out of pocket costs with advantage and copays should I get hospitalized or if my local hospitals drop advantage plan patients, which looking into it that is happening around the country. I choose my doctors, anywhere in the U.S. with no insurance involvement or pre authorizations that decide if I get covered or not. Choose wisely folks. You may win your appeals that they originally rejected you coverage, but it could take so long to go through the layers of appeals you may die before you win. Advantage companies will wear you down and know where their profit margin on your care costs them money and no profit. You will then be sent home to die as my friend who had leukemia and was constantly fighting his insurance company in his sick bed at home. The insurance company out lasted him. No supplement plan would accept him with him already being sick..

A couple of thoughts and I acknowledge that we may have different experiences. What I see is that low to middle income beneficiaries enroll in Advantage plans. Higher income beneficiaries enroll in original Medicare with Medigap and prescription drug plans. Beneficiaries that have IRMAA almost exclusively enroll in original Medicare and Medigap plans. Your format compared the cost of zero premium Advantage plans with Medigap plans that would require a separate dental plan. This is almost an apples to oranges comparison. Virtually all zero premium Advantage plans with dental coverage provide very, very, basic dental coverage (same with vision and hearing). A separate dental plan is typically much more comprehensive and appropriate for individuals who need dental care. My biggest concern with this video is that you underplayed the significance of prior approvals which are a key element in reducing costs in managed care Advantage plans. Prior approvals can delay and/or deny necessary medical care. It is misleading to suggest that original Medicare also requires prior approval for medically nessary services that are covered by Medicare.
@Theretirementnerds
@Theretirementnerds Год назад
Appreciate you watching and adding your perspective. For your first point and income trends, it is an interesting observation. We're assuming you are an agent? If not, you can correct us. In general, yes, people who have the means to afford supplement plans are more likely to get supplement plans. We do see a significant number of very well-off people choosing advantage plans because of the mindset of not wanting to pay for something they don't use while still having the means to handle a bad year or years hitting the MOOP on Advantage plans. So many different mentalities on this, but if people do not have at least a certain amount of wealth, they cannot afford supplement plans. The format was the best we could do. Not sure how else to compare Advantage plans that come with dental to supplement plans that do not. To the point of zero premium advantage plans having very, very basic dental and vision... that depends. Location is important. Carriers in the area and plans are important. There are several zero premium Advantage plans around here locally that have stronger dental benefits than the standalone offerings. There are also others that do not. For your third point, we had to go back and watch how we covered the administration of the two plans because it has been a while, but after watching again, we aren't fully understanding your disagreement with this section. We say almost verbatim what you wish was said as well as more on top of that about the negatives of Advantage plan denial and prior auth processes. On the supplement side, similarly, we only mention that if the procedure is not approved by Medicare, it will be denied, otherwise, if it is approved by Medicare, it will be approved by Supplement plans - no questions asked. Not really sure how else we could've phrased these. Again, appreciate your feedback and insights! Thank you for watching and reading this far :)

@friendsofjandt
@friendsofjandt Год назад
I was told today that if I've been on advantage and try to switch to original+supplement, there will be a medical questionairre for which I can be denied coverage due to "wrong" answers?
@Theretirementnerds
@Theretirementnerds Год назад
This will depend, but usually, the answer is yes. Here are 3 scenarios: 1. If you went on Medicare at 65 and chose an Advantage plan, you can switch to a Supplement plan within 1 year with no questions asked. 2. You went on Medicare at any age, chose a Supplement plan to start, then switch to an Advantage plan, you have 1 year to try it out. If you want to switch back to supplement, you can within 1 year. This is only on your first time going from Supplement to Advantage, you can't keep switching back and forth. 3. You went on Medicare after 65 and took an Advantage plan OR you took an Advantage plan at 65 and it has been more than a year, then yes, if you want to switch to original + supplement, there will be a medical questionnaire. The insurance company can either accept you at your age rate, they can accept you but charge you higher premiums than they regularly would, or they could deny you. It isn't so much answering questions "wrong." You need to answer them honestly. They are asking about your health and any medical conditions. Certain, high-cost, chronic conditions will cause the insurance company to not want to take on that risk. Does that help?
