So, what is this one biggest mistake that is so important that I decided to make a separate video specifically on this subject?
Strangely enough it is a problem that started with a court case back in the 1990s.
Unlike the younger generation, many of us remember when public access to the internet was new. In the early 190s the public internet was still getting its footing.
There was a company that decided to create a website to promote complaints about insurance companies. Its business model was to publish every bad comment they could find and then charge the insurance company to “clean it up”.
Of course, insurance companies sued to shut-down the website arguing it was nothing more than extortion. The courts, however, were very concerned about stifling free speech on the internet. They ruled that as long as the comments were real comments from real people, the website could continue to operate. Even if the comments or complaints were not relevant.
Consumer Affairs. If your first impression was to think this is like Consumer Reports, that may be intentional, but it’s not correct. I will show you the difference in a moment.
Medicare is the only organization that can create legitimate Star Ratings for Medicare Plans. No other organizations Star ratings are considered valid and cannot be promoted or illustrated by a certified Medicare insurance agent.
Second. Medicare supplement plans do not have a Star Rating. Only Medicare Advantage Plans and Medicare Part D prescription drug plans have star ratings.
Why this is the case is the most important point you need to understand.
The answer: because the insurance company has no say in your benefit coverage. Your experience with a Medicare supplement is your experience with Medicare and because that does not change from one plan or one insurance company to another, there is no need to create a measure of average performance. Medicare would be rating themselves and all supplement plans and insurance companies would have the same rating. It would be kind of silly for Medicare just to give itself a 5-star rating.

Good explanation. I'm preaching to the choir here but the US health care system has too many moving parts and shifts too much risk to individuals. Having said that my wife and I have been happy with traditional Medicare, our choice of supplement plan and Part D prescription plan. We are both still healthy geezers so have not yet stressed the system.

This is very informative. Thank you so much. I've watched many medicare related channels and found yours extremely helpful, My wife and I have just enrolled in the original medicare, and in the process of choosing a supplement plan, then listened to one of your presentations in which you advised about choosing an insurance company wisely. We were about to choose one that most of our friends chose, but wondered if it is really as good as it claims; For example, it says on their enrollment website that the plan is community-rate, however my friend who enrolled into the plan last year the premium was $104/m, this year, it went up to $119/m, it's up more than 10%, this increase doesn't feel like just inflation to me, but more like age issued supplement plan. Is there a way to make sure the plan is indeed community-issued not age-issued?

@@sherry2682002 I know the company to which you are referring. It's a faux community rated and is popular only among those that do not research their alternatives. I really appreciate all your videos. There are so many things to learn and consider before jumping in. One question that I have see yet though. How do the plans sold by your brokerage compare in price and price stability, with plans purchased through AARP? Are there any additional discounts or extended benefits offered through AARP?
@MedigapSeminars
@MedigapSeminars 9 месяцев назад
Insurance prices are regulated by the state. We don't have different prices for the same plan. The AARP "discount" is not a discount. It's a way to say a plan is priced as Community Rated, then have a contractual 3% annual price increase like an Attained Age policy. The 39% discount is not a 39% lower price. It's a guaranteed annual price increase (often one of two) Then they don't have to report the 3% price increase as a price increase. They call it a reversal of a discount. Anyway, I am contracted with United Healthcare to offer the AARP plan and do so when appropriate, with the customer understanding fully what they are getting into. If there is a Medigap company I don't work with , it's my choice not theirs. They all want us selling for them.

Thanks for the informative video. Question: If Medicare makes all the decisions on claims, where the Medicare supplement insurance has no say in what is covered or what is not covered, as long as our doctors determine it is medically necessary - then the question is, does it matter which medicare broker we buy the supplemental plans from?
@MedigapSeminars
@MedigapSeminars 2 года назад
If the house is blue, do I use the front door or garage door? Sorry for the jest. The issues you mentioned have nothing to do with the question you asked. The BENEFITS are the same, but the prices are very different. up top 300% for the same policy. Even more, some insurance companies low ball their initial price with the intent of increases prices rapidly over time. What we do is help you find the insurance company that will most likely have the most stable prices over your lifetime.

Does the supplement plan and payment go into effect on the 1st of your 65th birthday month no matter when you get it? Thanks!
@MedigapSeminars
@MedigapSeminars 3 года назад
A supplement Plan can be effective no sooner than the day BOTH Medicare Part A and Part B are effective. For most, that is the first day of the month you turn 65. You can enroll in a supplement up to six months before it is to start (depending on the state). But it will not be effective until your Medicare is effective.

Is there any reason one shouldn’t , for someone in California with their special birthday rule, to just simply pick the cheapest option (for example cheapest plan G), and just check every year to see if there’s a cheaper option? Basically my question is for a CA resident - shouldn’t the cheapest price be the ONLY thing worth considering when picking a Medigap company to go with? What am I missing? Thanks
@MatthewClaassenCMT
@MatthewClaassenCMT 3 года назад
There is an old saw that applies here…”Penny wise and pound foolish.” And “Picking up pennies in front of a bulldozer”. What happens when that cheap company charges a 20% price increase two months after you birthday rule? How much time and energy are you willing to spend in your retirement managing your Medicare? I tell my staff not to work with people who want to do this. The cheap companies are too often a customer service nightmare that are not worth it to us.
@dsmith565
@dsmith565 3 года назад
@@MatthewClaassenCMT that’s a fair point - but on the other side is - once you pick a plan - again for only a CA resident - are you saying that then they should not ever price shop? Or maybe do so every few years? if CA has a birthday rule - then shouldn’t you be advocating that your clients use that to their advantage? Surely a “set it and forget it” model wouldn’t be proper when a Medigap recipient has the ability to change providers every year.
@MatthewClaassenCMT
@MatthewClaassenCMT 3 года назад
@@dsmith565 Who said anything about “set an forget”? We monitor plans for unusual price increases and focus on identifying companies with stable prices. If there is an unusual price increase we re-shop plans. That can be done any day of the year. If a person in CA has health issues that prevent then from applying for new coverage, we use the birthday rule. We do not re-shop for a cheap plan every year.
@MatthewClaassenCMT

@@bradgoldman9578 California is one of the more expensive states in the US for Medicare supplements. It also has pockets of areas where many doctors only accept Advantage plan (They get a bonus from the insurance company for Advantage patients). Most importantly, it has the highest Medigap annual price increases in the country. If you are trying to time price increases you are playing a fools game. We do a lot of business in California and I have seen people think they can game the system way too often. As I mentioned in the comment above, it's not worth it to us and it's not worth it to our clients. There are way too many ways you can jump out of the frying pan into the fire.

Most independent Medicare brokers like yourself are very knowledgeable and come across as very trustworthy people to do business with, so it is very difficult to pick and choose which one we should go with. But the company is only as good as the people like yourself who run the operation today. But what happens tomorrow or a year down the line if you sell your business to someone else who does not have the same business ethics as you do? What consequences, if any, if we need to switch to a different broker?

Hi Lawrence - MA is one of three states that have opted out of Standardized Medicare. You cannot get the standardized Medicare supplement plans in MA. What they do offer (their own version) is priced too high to be reasonable for most. In addition, their licensing fees are among the highest in the nation. For a small state with a very small population of retirees, it simply is not worth being licensed there. #Medigapseminars

@stuntmasta305
@stuntmasta305 2 года назад
The star ratings are more reflective on the beneficiaries that are on the plan, not necessarily management of the plan. One of the major components in assessing the star ratings are how often the beneficiaries on the plan are going in to their routine appointments, giving health information to health professionals. This is why so many MAPDs are pushing for their beneficiaries to go into their physicals, do health risk surveys, etc, because collectively it increases their performance. The star system is designed to keep in check and combat Medicare's biggest contributors to cost: beneficiaries typically do not go to doctors appointments until something happens, and because so, are not giving medical professionals the adequate information for detecting and most importantly, avoiding or managing onset of diseases. Statistically speaking, it makes sense, people who actively take steps in managing their health are less likely to try new expensive drugs or procedures and because so, the insurance companies are happy. This is why people can enroll in any 5 star plan, because overall, it provides a gateway for the sickly to join, and thus have a more than likely chance on getting procedures or drugs covered, and lessens the burdens on other insurance plans.
@MedigapSeminars
@MedigapSeminars 2 года назад
Gee Stefan, it almost sounds like you are trying to defend something. The point you miss is that Star Ratings were initially designed to aid the consumer in finding a plan with quality of care and good consumer benefits. That is still what is expected from the consumer. You point out "what is" very well, but it is not what the consumer expects or wants from a Star Rating. The consumer wants to know if they are getting involved in a good plan with a consumer responsive company. They don't care about the administrative issues and certainly don't care what it cost Medicare in the long run. Medicare's Star Ratings have devolved from a Consumer Friendly tool to a measure of administrative and political prowess. The Star Rating no longer measures or fairly weighs the issues the Consumer is most interested in. It has, thus, become a tool with very little value or significance to the consumer.
