Yea I honestly thought the person in that vehicle was one of the ones that died that truck plowed into him so fast. Also wondering about the white truck that was In front of him. It’s crazy if you watch the video of it the car in front of the white truck had the driver standing outside the door he seen what was about to happen and jumped over the barrier barely making it!!!
To finally learn the driver in the fj survived that horrible wreck is jawdropping and to help other trapped is amazing, im glad he's ok and sad for those who didn't make it my condolences for the families
Kudos to the designer of the Toyota FJ....what a beast of a vehicle. Kudos to the man who survived in it...and helped straight away.... Condolences to the dead...sometimes the fickle finger of fate touches down.....
No joke that design is an amazing design. I've seen so many people survive the unthinkable in those. It's something you'd wanna put your kid into for sure.
@@cazaruu78 exactly. I was shopping for months, for an FJ for my kid when this crash occurred. The crash sealed the deal that I definitely wanted to wait for the right FJ. We purchased one a month later.
My first car in high school was a 1971 FJ40. A Jeep Wagoneer turned in front of me at an intersection and hit me head on. Engine came off mounts but didn’t come into cabin. I had no injuries.
This is so awful, I am amazed that only 6 people lost their lives. I thought it was going to be many many more. What a nightmare for the emergency responders as well. So very very sad.
It’s DFW the worst drivers right after Brooklyn NYC. I’m moved here from Chicago and I regret my decision. I have 19 years DL, never accidents, collisions. After 6 months in DFW I had 2 collisions. 🤦
The problem with what happened that day is we all knew in advance what the weather conditions were and people still felt the need to fly on the highway.
@@devinlauderdale9635 That is drivers in general. Driving at highway speeds on overpasses GUARANTEED to freeze is a known danger. Why oh why can’t people learn from other peoples tragedy?
@@enid0mom That is TRUCKERS in general, always thinking they are completely invincible and doing whatever the F they want, trucks cause more deaths on the road than anything else and the irony is THEY are the ones that have CBs and radios to get traffic and weather alerts. Apparently the trucker who rammed into the back of the FJ just didn;t care. I HATE semis, SO dangerous to everyone else on the road.
@@devinlauderdale9635 this was not Dallas. This was in Fort Worth. The temps can be different in both cities depending on where the location is. That stretch of highway is risky because you are driving up an incline and come up to the crest of a hill only to see a steep incline down. It is considered a treacherous part of the highway during weather such as this.
For real! But it is probably incredibly dangerous to drive slowly when everyone else is driving fast. I doubt there would be much choice in the matter :(
Other reports stated that with that condition...drivers were going about 75± and not one person cared to give themselves some space between them and the vehicle in front of them. Lookin at 3:43 time mark, look at that vast empty road yet there seems to be vehicle following oh so close to the vehicle in front of it. Can't say I feel bad...sucks that people passed but stupidity* not always but sometimes can play a factor in meeting your maker sooner than later.
I just moved to Texas and never have i ever seen so much speeding, tailgating, cutting you off and people texting or on their cell phones. This is really tragic. It only takes one mistake
And either way it shouldn't occur. You put everyone at risk. My friends bf just died in a car crash at 37 yrs old so ppl really should not be doing this.
@@1845hunt you are a hypocrite living in a world of hypocrites... No one thinks they are about chasing their arbitrary ambitions... Everyone acts overentitled.. its like this everywhere and people are encouraged to feel they deserve it.. We get everything coming to us, so stop whining.
I just passed my road test Friday.....and I saw all sorts of bad drivers as well during it! But I somehow got through it and passed. But seeing videos like this don't get new drivers like me eager to get out on the road! Someone almost ran into me when I was exiting a neighborhood during that test... You go slow in a neighborhood!! Near where in Texas did you see driving like that? My boyfriends been to Dallas I think.
Oh my gosh I never seen this video before...now I wish I didn't. Had no idea such an impact occurred with that truck. Just always knew it was a big pileup. Chilling.
When I saw the video originally I thought for sure that man in the silver jeep was a goner. I'm so happy to see he not only survived, but helped others... truly an angel
I am so happy to know that the man in the white pick up survived! When the wreck occurred, I felt certain that the driver in the white pickup truck was killed. I’ve often thought back on that white pick up and how it flew through the air. It was very disturbing to see. I’m so relieved to find out that he survived!
I always drive slow, but slower in those kind of days, but some drivers are out their mind, I don't know what they want to prove. They go over the speed limit.
@@omegasage777 I mean basically what happened was that part of the road didn't get salt to prevent black ice from forming. I live just an hour away from the DFW area, and specifically in Dallas, the roads were not prepared at all. No one expected the weather to be as bad as it was. That day was scary, and it happened so early in the morning because majority were medical workers who needed to clock in for the morning shift. I was in highschool back then, and many calls were made throughout the day to see where loved one's were.
I get so sad watching anything about this. I live in Fort Worth and was coming home from my night shift and saw the highway to take this but decided to go another route. I would’ve been there either before, after, or during this and I just feel so sad for everyone who was involved
6 people died?! (rest in piece to those people who met their fate) I honestly thought more had or would've died from the videos shown, man that's scary
When I was in 7th grade I was in band and we had this like helper and he was like in his 20’s and he was the best and he was heading to school and he got into a pile up crash and I just remneber my teacher getting the call and telling us and I just rmember crying but thank the gosh he Survuved
This guy somehow survived that wreck i was sure noone could have survived that. And then goes to help people, for 3 hours!! And come to realise his spine is broken and he has dislocated his hips!
Why is no one talking about how only six people died?! That's crazy low considering how many vehicles crashed and how many could have had multiple passengers! That carnage and so little lives taken?! Incredible!
Humans are incredible... some were cripples on impact with their injuries but some weren't and they were able to help. I think its stuff like that that puts humans at an advantage in the Darwin race for survival of species
He said he couldn't see beyond the hill and the turn. This is why you always lower your speed in those places. I always have Google Maps on my dash so I can see what's going on ahead of me at all times. When the roads are turning orange or red, that lets me know that there's a problem ahead and that I need to prepare to slow down or stop.
Why? It might seem he was driving fast but he could have been trying to stop but couldn't due to black ice and was sliding. It takes a mile or more for a truck to stop especially if he is loaded.
This was the worst thing to witness. As soon as I saw what was happening I pulled off the highway and had no idea what actually happened until a few hours later when the images of it came on the news. It still makes me sick to my stomach knowing I witnessed some loose their lives. So thankful I didn’t take the express at morning.🙏🏻
I was on a mandatory trip to Houston that day, and went over that same spot about 5 minutes before this pile up happened. My parents called me immediately and asked if I was okay and told me about it.
Having lived in the DFW area for 15 years, we dread winter. Whenever it gets cold enough for the roads to get like they did here it is a living nightmare. When you have to go to work you are risking your life on these freeways. Terrifying.
3 hours before that one guy finally felt his fractured spine and dislocated hip. Absolutely astonishing what adrenaline can do to make the impossible possible.
What are you supposed to do in a situation like this? I’ve always heard that you’re supposed to stay in your vehicle but that would be really hard to do.
I watch this video a lot to remind myself how dangerous driving on the Ice is. It doesn’t snow a lot where I live and I just started driving so this is something that I greatly fear
I remember 30 minutes prior to pileup in Cedar Hill I got into a self accident 8 days before I turned 19 my very first time driving on icy conditions I was being cocky thinking a 2000fwd Honda Accord V6 2 Door Coupe would adapt more than my Mom's 2019 RWD Jeep I crashed into my neighbors recycling bin that saved me from crashing into his living room I was going 10 on a 30 zone and not even 20 yards I broke my passenger mirror and scrape the Clear Coat on the Fender which the car is so dark that I couldn't tell that it was scraped I was heading to a doctor's appointment and was forced to work despite my city putting a shut down on business
I’m amazed only 36 were injured and 6 dead after watching this. Why people don’t slow down after it’s snowed and the road has possible black ice is beyond me. I worked as a medic for many years and the worst pile up I saw was about 10-15 cars coming down the interstate on the grade so the interstate was going down a mountain and it had rained and people just started piling up in one another. That county was a rural county thankfully or it would have probably been much worse. I’ve seen bad accidents as a medic and fatalities due to alcohol, drugs, texting, and drowsy drivers from lack of sleep. One was a 16 year old girl texting and driving and she hit another car head on which that other car then ended up wrapped around a telephone pole. The 16 year old “professional” driver was fine but the other car had a mother and 12 year old son. I was flying on the helicopter as a medic that day and we took mom to the ER where she died shortly after. Another helicopter came for the son that the fire department was trying to get out and while we were enroute with our patient the medics on the ground canceled the other helicopter because the boy was pronounced dead on scene. Why people don’t drive safely is beyond me. If it’s rained or snowed slow down, don’t text and drive and do t drink and drive or use drugs and drive. So many kids think they are professional drivers and that they can text and drive until they get into an accident. That’s why I used parentheses and said the 16 year old was a professional driver because she somehow thought she was. She was probably only driving for about a year when she crashed and killed the mother and son. I hate driving in snow and I hate driving in rain and I really have people that text and drive or use alcohol or drugs or both and drive. Seen too many deaths and severe injuries
This could have been avoided? Ppl need to use some common sense ? It’s below freezing the road is wet and your vehicle or other’s vehicle’s aren’t kicking up water spray , then you are on black ice !! Slow down or get off the road !! You don’t run 70 mph !!!
I was less than a half mile from this mess, and heard nothing at all. There wasn't any ice on the roads around the freeway that I could see anywhere. Evidently, it formed only on the bridges.
As a lifelong Maine resident and 30 year snow plowing professional, i can say with certainty salt brine makes the roadways more dangerous and prone to icing. Sand/salt granule/ grit is the only and safest way to treat roads. Period.
What other states? everywhere from the Midwest to California the speed limit is a bit higher than that on highways. I've seen it go up to 80 out in the middle of nowhere. 70 is usually the norm across the country west of the east coast.
When I see this, I was driving by when this happened, I look now at the FedEx 18 wheeler 3:17 and now knowing that my friend was underneath it gets me.
I really hate to drive highways. Even in the slow lane you're being pushed by a car behind you to go faster than the speed limit. It you leave a distance in front of you, someone will squeeze in that distance space you are allowing yourself. Speed is definitely one of the causes of crashes.
Dude I spent all this time thinking the person in the FJ was no longer with us but not only did he survive, he got out and started helping. That FJ did its job. Toyota. Let's go places
This is when the big freeze hit Texas and people FROZE TO DEATH, in the 21st century because the GOP doesn’t like to be regulated and took all of Texas off the electrical grid. It STILL isn’t fixed. I was luckier than many. I didn’t have any busted pipes and over the ~72 hours in the worst of it, my power was out for about 6-7 hours a couple times. I sure worried about my birds, though. They came out fine. This event was even named. Winter storm Uri. This multi-vehicle crash was one of the worst things that happened. Those medics are CLEARLY suffering from PTSD. Flash backs are one of the most common symptoms. I bet all the people who survived also have varying levels of PTSD. This has happened to people throughout history. It just didn’t have a name before.
