Medieval Aesthetic and Décor 

It is crazy just how aesthetically transformative it can be if you simply avoid plastic.

First I need a Castle...Then we're good.

I will say some hanging drying herbs also look amazing! They also make the room smell amazing

I recently moved into my first owned home. One of the first decisions I made was that I'd like to make my living room look like a fantasy style tavern. We've got a thrift store five minutes away so my plan is to drop by every few weeks and start collecting things to help improve the aesthetic

It may not be medieval, but my entire study is furnished in colonial style, so I certainly get where you are coming from. It is an absolute necessity for me in order to get any creative work done.

With the suggestion of music while doing tasks: I have both of the WoW cookbooks and play medieval themed music, tavern music while making the recipes. Listening to that stuff while making medieval themed foods adds a near 'magical' feeling of being literally immersed in my favorite game.

One thing that is very medieval... is working at home. Most medieval people worked at, and around, their homes. Especially craftsmen - having your workshop either in the same room where you live, or as a separate room in your house, was the norm. But even farmers would spend a lot of time working at home, weaving, sewing, milling, repairing household items, etc. Fishermen would repair their nets at home... I think it wasn't until the industrial era, that working away from home became the norm in cities. So, anyone working at home, be it because of covid, or personal choice, you are doing a very medieval thing! Also, it may be easier to 'medievalise' one's workshop if it's at home. Even if it's just a home office. And definitely having a crafting workbench at home, especially one geard towards woodworking, does add a lot to the medieval feel. Even if there are a few power tools etc. ;) Making things with your own hands (and some tools) still connects us to our ancestors. As long, as it doesn't feel like you're just operating a factory. *looks at a 3D printer and a CNC machine* xD ... ok, that's magic. Magic is acceptable.

It's a personal goal of mine to make a Lord of the Rings themed space in a section of a room. I always had a dream for it since reading the books. A slow process, but one worth continuing.

Since I saw the lord of the rings, 9 years old, now 27, I have been enamored by fantasy medieval everything. My biggest influences were Peter Jackson, and Tolkien, as I'm sure is the case for most. Games I particularly enjoyed growing up and now are the elder scrolls oblivion and skyrim. I have even journaled exclusively out of leather-bound journals with fountain pens once I could afford them and cannot wait to do my entire house over into my favorite nook in the world that reminds me of my favorite places in fantasy. My wife decided I'm odd and amusing when I drink Mead, wine or my 1554 beer out of a clay mug while smoking a pipe and reading...I'm sure the sword mounted above my chair doesn't help 😅

I took your advice and got a chest for my room, man does it make a differece! Everytime I get my shoes I just feel like I'm going on an adventure, it's great!

I've chest from my grandmas place and beeswax candles in 4 brass candelabras .Yay for getting some cool Medieval vibes already ! next on my to do list is paint the beams above my dinning table a dark brown .another medieval suggestion as an interior designer :coat hooks/ pegs in the walls, embroidered pillows , tapestries , buntings , quilts , and linen bedding if you can afford it .I bought the Casa Luna linen sheets and quilted bedspread in the color Natural and sleep like the dead !

Tallow Candles are pretty easy to make. The cow fat ones I've made have a creamy sort of smell when unscented (remind me of cream sodas.) I was inspired by the GOTs books to experience what they smelled like. It's easy to not make them well though so be sure to follow instructions to the T (had a batch turn out smelling like over boiled beef because I didn't clean the meat off well enough. Not good.)

I was very impressed with this video. The candles are fantastic! The sound of the wick just make my room sound great and smell even better.

I hope one day to have a stone tower connected to my house that is an armoury, an office that is a medieval room (with electronics and wires as hidden as can be) and a backyard that is essentially a medieval military campsite.

I'm moving into a new house in a few weeks. My dad always lived in wood classic homes, as he was a carpenter and has so many neat old things I inherited from him including a framed picture of a castle his friend took from a helicopter view. And am dedicated to making it a classic medieval/ Renaissance look. So exited for this winter to be living and building the home I feel I will most comfortable in. Thank for the tips!

I like that you're clear that you're talking about a fantasy medieval atmosphere rather than a historical medieval one, and that historical accuracy might be preferred, but isn't necessary. I find that better than a strict no-can-do for anything that isn't completely historically accurate, and much _much_ better than claiming it is historically accurate when it isn't. There are just so many things people believe are medieval that aren't, and things people don't think are medieval that are.

Thrift store finds of mine. A 3x4 ft. Tapestry, fleur de lis embossed fabrics, burgundy draperies and gold tiebacks, wicker baskets or old fashioned sewing kits, simple leather handbags, ermine stoles, among many others smaller knickknacks.

I don't really have my own space in the home to decorate so when I read fantasy, I just turn off the lights, use a yellow/orange light booklight, and put some appropriate music on. It's not much but it makes me happy!

i played a plague tale, watched game of thrones, made tavern in minecraft, watched pirate performing arts. and now, i feel alive. i know this sounds weird by some of peoples knowing that we live in modernity. but i dare to reject some modern stuff, and.. beautiful, this anachronism feels so calming and peace. maybe i will decor my house to looks like a Château D'Ombrage when i grow up 😂.

Oh...I left a comment on another video about little things and everyday "touches" that let me carry a bit of the medieval/fantasy with me. One of those things is the pretty extensive music playlists I've cobbled together, with titles like "Pagan Folk", "LOTR/Fantasy", "Skyrim Lute music", "Witcher 3", to name a few categories. I commute via public transport to & from work, and one of my favorite ways to relax during my commute home is by losing myself to such music, while letting my imagination soar.

I bet that draping walls and ceilings would greatly change the mood and hide the modern nature of the room itself. I've seen it in an Indian restaurant. From what I know it would be more historically accurate than wooden panels (which were often added later to medieval buildings).

I'm in a bad position financially, stuck in a cramped apartment. But I've done little things here and there. Music helps, but it's important not to neglect silence. In trying to escape from modernity, it's easy to replace one unhealthy dopamine loop with a different one. Silence, learning to simply live in the moment, will help to immerse one in the experience of life. Be it meditation or merely moment of reflection here and there, it will contribute greatly to one's mental health.

I am excited to be looking for a home! I definitely want a renaissance or medevil style cottage style home. It takes me to a time that felt natural. Full of details and artitecture unique to each home. To each individual.

Wall hangings are a really good touch, especially if you’re renting. I’ve also found a pair of headboards that are carved in the “linen panel” (Tudor) style that I plan to make into a pair of settees or into a single deacons bench. Currently a good part of my SCA garb is kept in plastic footlockers although I hope to make wooden chests to replace them. I do have a couple cedar chests but they’re either too heavy or too fragile/old to use for events (one is likely over 200 years old so…yeah…that one definitely is treated carefully).

I have a "coffee table" and two end tables which were made from chunks of large wood branches pegged together with slabs of berle wood for the tops, and I also have a medieval style bench made from a rough wood plank (sanded smooth) and a pair of supports with a cross brace (it also has holes drilled for a cribbage board in the middle of the top). I also have a number of iron candle holders and sconces as well as copper and glass hurricane lamps. To this I have added wooden bowls and trays and various woven wicker baskets, as well as faux fur blankets, throws, and pillows. My couch is a black "iron" futon frame (back, seat, and brace supports) between wood sides/arms that serves me quite well (real easy to dismantle and transport if I have to move), and it keeps within my general iron and wood base aesthetic I have for my furniture. I have other fun little tidbits that vary in anesthetic from Medieval and Renaissance to Victorian and Steampunk.

Hello! I don’t know if your living situation has changed, but for that fireplace feel they do make faux corner fireplaces that use these cans of gelled isopropyl I think so you not only get a real flame but it even crackles like one! It also is smokeless so no chimney needed.

Dude this is so needed. In a way a lot of people look at medieval homes or regionalny and love it, and want it, but fial to understand what makes it so. And when they figure it out transfereing understanding to actually making your home so is the hardest step. Ive been meaning to slavize my home and myself, or well Polishize myself and home. But that practical glimmer what youve done here is such a Godsend.

If it comes to clay, you can actually buy it, it's not expensive, because some workshops offer a "Co-burning service", so you pay them a fee (this is where the money comes in, burning is not cheap) and for that, they do your ceramics. Now you can craft whatever thing you want made from clay! (usually, you need two steps, the biscuit firing, after which you apply glaze and then the glaze firing. It's not harmful if you read a bit about working with clay. It dries if left in the air, so keep plastic + damp [not wet!] rags around it till you're finished.) OR you can even buy blanks of cups and so on and ask the workshop owner if they share their glazes (if not, you can buy them, again not super expensive) and make your very own cup and so on. It's so cool! You have to match the glaze to the temperature of your glaze firing though! Ask the workshop owner about that. Now go, my fellow fantasy medieval atmosphere fans, create the things of your dreams and send me happy thoughts if you liked it. I absolutely love this aesthetic and your place! We went for an art nouveau style in our '30s home because that matches very well with the English Victorian architecture (though a little more stylised). And all that matches wonderfully with my 1890s-1910s clothing style.😁 We're saving the more cosy medieval style for our garage/garden house that we want to resemble a fantasy country cottage (dark wooden beams, wooden floors, stone steps, shutters on the windows).

This might just be how country I am buuuuut my childhood and now into my adult life this is how my home for the most part has always looked especially with furs and rustic wood candles literally all of it lol. Hell I wouldn't own a tv or computer if my wife didn't want them. But ya I think a lot of folks do this not shoot for midevil but a rustic west look the two just look very similar.

And here I thought I was the only medieval one left.

I love wizards .. my place is decorated with a combination of like tech and fantasy wizard lol .. but just adding that little touch makes it fun .. .. wall mounted candles that’s cool For me it’s a book shelf, I have flasks with potions , large melted candles, a balance and scale .. the kitchen I try to make it look like an apothecary with spices and my mortar and pestle as a center piece .. wine bottles .. I’ ordered some plants .. I’m going to grow mushrooms that glow in the dark haha.. I have some lighting .. I guess I’m trying to make it look like a wizards study with a desk and tools he would use .. I have those rustic journals which I use to write and compose music. It’s a cool place to study and write music ..

🎩hi. Now for really coolness you need a medieval instrument. Now here’s a really cool one an Armenian duduk. They have been around for a few thousand of years, sound great and are not that expensive. Mine cost under £70 delivered. Just think of the music from the film gladiator. Or even a bone flute (if you can get one)

If you're afraid of fire or aren't aloud to use real candles buy some realistic looking led candles. I like the kind with the melting wax look.

I encourage you to try olive oil lamps to light with…water in the bottom, 1/2 to 3/4 “ of oil on top, float a wick. I use Hebrew memorial lamp wicks since they are easy and inexpensive. Mostly they are very very safe, it is virtually impossible to set anything on fire if knocked over. If you’re interested, I can send you photos and better instructions ……
