Yellow Lady story...( now she is a ghost) Hard to stay at home. So how about going somewhere? Hm… Oh! I’ve heard about the castle in Liw, this small town in Mazovian Province. Now, what is it that they say about it? There seems to be some legend about it, something about some ghost… Let’s see on the official website, maybe they wrote something about it there. Aha! „Yellow Lady,” the castellan’s wife, I knew it was something dark. Oh, the castellan also said sometimes, but much less than this Ludwika… Yes, I would be happy to visit this place. And for now - time to learn more about this whole story. Because neither Ludwika, nor castellan haunts the place for no reason! See how it could have looked like: June Anno Domini 1450, castle in Liw - conversation in the chamber of Ludwika, castellan’s wive (between her ladies-in-waiting): BARBARA: Are you sure we are doing good? After all, if the lord finds out, then he’ll deprive us both of our lives! OLGA: Don’t worry, he’s so credulous that he’ll believe everything! Ludwika - I mean, OUR LADY, of course! - is also like that, she won’t even think that we could take this trinket! We’ll tell her that it went missing. I’ll hide the ring so that the servants of the lord don’t find it. You know that the bricks in the walls of my room are already loose in some places, right? I will take one out, insert the ring into the cavity and push the brick back in, no one will notice. TERESA: And if won’t take care about the missing gift? What then? After all, he doesn’t have to immediately suspect that Ludwika betrays him if he’ll believe her that it to was an accidental disappearance… OLGA: Then we will wait until he gives her a new gem… Because if he doesn’t think right away that she gave it to someone, he will certainly give her something new! So when he does so, we’ll wait a while for security, for it not to look so suspiciously… And we’ll hide what he gives her again, then I, as if I can no longer bear to live with the secret, will run to him with news that the wife cuckolds him! Then, even if he wants to test her - you know that these „divine judgments” for unfaithful women are always such that not one will pass them. He will have to get rid of her. And that’s good! Everyone loves her so much, and she’s not an angel at all! Record from the Chronicle of the Mazovian Province, dated to Anno Domini 1450: In that year, on the twelfth day of September, Ludwika, the wife of a lord in the castle of Liw, was condemned to death because of infidelity. The castellan, despite his great love for Ludwika, could not overlook the proof of the heavy sin: he had given her the three rings, the works of the most eminent goldsmith in the area, one by one, and they disappeared one by one. Olga, his wife’s favourite lady-in-waiting, told him that his wife, instead of being faithful to him until her death (which she in the church, before the bishop himself, at the wedding swore!), accepted a lover during his absence, and the gifts from the lord of Liw adorned the fingers of this godless man after these secret trysts. A month later it turned out, however, that the lady of Liw, by her people and spouse so much loved, had died innocently… It was not her betrayal, but the jealousy and the wicked will of Ludwika’s dignitaries, and especially the lady-in-waiting who was closest to her lady - the lady-in-waiting in whom the castellan’s lady had put the most trust. By God’s will, because of His sign, the deception came to light. The next day, the castellan was found under the window of the tower where his wife’s sentence had been made. Conscience encouraged him to take his life, which he did, having jumped out of this very window; he crashed his head against the pavement of the graveyard, his death was quick. The diary of the castellan, the lord at the castle in Liw: June 5, Anno Domini 1450 Today, after a long wait, the work on the gift for Ludwika was finally completed. It was true what was said about the goldsmith - indeed, no one else could have made the more beautiful ring for me. My beloved wife was so happy, she showed her new ring to all of her guests! I am very glad to see her so happy. June 30, Anno Domini 1450 I have just returned from a detour of the estate when strange news was given to me. Ludwika’s ring was lost. She searched, together with her ladies-in-waiting, in every corner of her chamber - nothing, it disappeared into thin air! The whole castle was searched, no one found it. But my love knows no borders the last penny I would give to make my wife happy. I ordered an identical at the goldsmith’s. July 31, Anno Domini 1450 Ludwika’s second ring was lost, in equally mysterious circumstances. This time, however, shortly after the whole event, her most trusted lady-in-waiting came to me. She was afraid earlier, but some voice told her my wife’s secret to betray: both gems were not lost without a trace. Ludwika, my snow white lily, is being bitten by the worm of sin and hides it well! She accepts the lover when I leave the castle in my professional affairs. She gave both of the rings to him and she cheated on me! I do not trust this yet, so I will give my last spouse a try. Another ring I will order, if this one also disappears - I will give her to court. September 1, Anno Domini 1450 So it happened. The lady-in-waiting told the truth, Ludwika has a lover! The third ring disappeared without a trace; this time, however, it happened when I was in the castle, which astonished me more than it actually angered ne. I did not suspect her lover of such impudence, I did not think he would come when I was here. Ludwika had masked herself well; she explained that the jewel probably slipped from her finger when she fainted. If that was the case, then it would have lied somewhere, would it not? Besides, I am wondering about something else. Ludwika’s lady-in-waiting asked about the name of her lover, says that she does not know who he is, because she has never seen his face; he always covers it when he enters the castle. September 1, Anno Domini 1450 Today came Dies Irae, Judgment Day, for me. My servants came running and screaming, bringing me… a nest of magpie. In it, in the middle of it, was the ring - the same one that I gave Ludwika as the one last to put her fidelity to trial! I immediately became suspicious. Since this ring in the magpie’s nest was found, not on the lover’s hand, maybe… maybe the other two were hidden somewhere? I told the servants to declare that I would not punish the person who stole and kept the jewels if they revealed themselves. And I was right! Ludwika’s lady-in-waiting, the same one who had told me about the betrayal, came running, in tears and fell to my feet, begging for forgiveness. The rings she gave me back, saying that she had hidden them in her room. I forgave her, of course… What else was left for me? Probably just a life of my sinful self to end. Yes, that is it… Before my eyes, there is Ludwika, helplessly trying to pierce a brick with her finger - „divine judgment”, which was to make the punishment lighter if she had passed it… But, of course, she did not pass it. How was she to do that, being a weak woman? God, be merciful to me, a sinner! The records from the Chronicle and the diary are, of course, fictious, and the conversation of the ladies-in-waiting - all the more.
