So-called subtelties were a way of showing off. A recomstruction of a feast given in 1466 on the return of the Earl of Warwick from the wars in France, shows a subtelty composed of a roast pig, inside a roast sheep, inside a roast ox - and inside the whole thing... well, take a look.
