Palio di Oria
The event originates from the Proclamation that Frederick II wanted to issue in 1225 during a stay in Oria. The Swabian Emperor, while waiting for Isabella of Brienne whom he would marry in November of the same year, decided to settle with his noble court in the hilly area closest to the port of Brindisi, where a few months later the daughter of John of Brienne, King of Jerusalem, would land. Precisely to honor the presence of the father of the betrothed and to make the people of the "fida et nobilissima cittade d'Orea" take part in the event, the Swabian emperor-in keeping with the tradition of the time-wanted to announce a "Tournament" among the four ancient districts: Castello, Judea, Lama and Santo Basilio.
Today, the "Tournament of the Wards" represents the most important and well-known medieval historical reenactment in all of Southern Italy and is an important reference point in the cultural and touristic panorama of the region of Puglia: a land that Frederick II had elected as his true homeland.
Frederick II was King of Sicily from 1198, King of Germany from 1212, King of Italy and Holy Roman Emperor from 1220 and King of Jerusalem from 1225. He was the son of emperor Henry VI of the Hohenstaufen dynasty and Queen Constance of Sicily of the Hauteville dynasty.
