Great review of a fantastic sword. I enjoyed the level of detail you went into and also covered all the main areas I like to here about. I must make one little point though. Many people say "Scotch-Irish" but the proper term is "Scots-Irish" and you will certainly be corrected by a Scotsman if you call him a "Scotchman." The reason I know is because I was corrected by a stern yet helpful Scotsman many years ago. Scotch is a term used when referring to products e.g. Scotch Whiskey, not people. I'm off to watch your review on the Ringneck now. Cheers.

I'm really enjoying your video's, however in this one, your pronunciation of Irish names and places made me wince. Not to worry though, its quite difficult for anyone not brought up in Gaelic schools to master some of the wierd nuances of irish spelling/pronunciations. Keep up the cool video's :-)

spndrp Too many more Albion reviews and I'd be broke. =) Actually, I currently only have one other Albion that I could review. Past that, I'd have to borrow them to review them right now. I have plans on buying maybe 1 or 2 more in the future, which I absolutely want. And that will likely compete with swords from other producers.

Why is the pommel of the sword so large? It looks like the pommel circle is too large to be used for handling purposes for extra leverage. It does not look like it fits into the hand at all...
@medievalreview
@medievalreview 8 лет назад
technically this sword is sized as a hand and a half or "bastard" sword. the pommel on these sword (specifically Irish ring pommel) do not have that a primary usage concern.

It is a lovely sword. I'll admit, though, that I appreciate the background on the Gallowglass even more than I do the information on this particular sword. Gallowglass is a word I've encountered before, but knew nothing of its history.
@medievalreview
@medievalreview 9 лет назад
When looking at swords there are 3 aspects to consider. Aesthetics and functionality are in some ways quantifiable, at least on a decision point for purchasing as swords, or determining is value. The third aspect is it's importance, either as a representation of history, culture, or some other aspect of humanity. Usually this has little bearing on someone's decision to buy a sword, however I feel in many ways it is just as important a thing to consider. I usually think about this much less quantifiable aspect when I chose to buy a sword. I've tried to ensure that I include this significance, at least in part, when doing the review. Very often this just pairs with the manufacturer's description, so I use it to give a bit more insight.

Sailor Barsoom gallowglass soldiets fought all over Europe for hundreds of years. It was a way of life and an occupation for generations especially since Ireland was a very poor land. Even more poor after the English exploited its people to no end for their own gains

Awesome review! I'm debating purchasing a sword from Albion myself, but I must ask: How are they shipped? I've seen an example of some of their movie based swords coming in wooden crates. Is that more or less universal for all of them? I'm wondering because I'd also like a good way to keep my blade stored and safe from the unbearably humid weather here in Florida.
@medievalreview
@medievalreview 9 лет назад
They are shipped in brown cardboard boxes, suspended between foam risers. just make sure you keep it oiled or waxed to protect it from the moisture.

their tradition never came from the irish. the gaels arrived in scotland from europe. the gaels landed in england and settled for a while .then, the romans arrived and the gaels fled up to the west coast of scotland and settled permanently others went to east. they also settled in the islands of scotland. the later vikings arrived on the east coast and assimilated with the picts and gaels, hence becoming known as the norse gaels.

I am of Gallowglass stock . We were of the Dal Riada people from Western Scotland originally. The two 'boys' or caddies were called Kerns. Thus the name Kern. Apparently the gallowglass were the warrior elite. Please include this is your sales pitch. Scotland is the only country that Ireland colonised so please be careful when you are selling a knockoff that is essentially an ornament. Respect please. Thank you.

I really think they're shooting themselves in the foot by artificially limiting their production. It may add some collectability, but few people are going to treat something at that price point as a "gotta buy them all" collectable. It literally costs them nothing to keep a large number of models up, with their method of manufacture.

My ancestor 10 generations back, John Me'lroy was the earl of Annandale Scotland, he was also a decedent of King Robert Bruce. He had to flee to the American colonies after having his title revoked for participating in a failed Scottish Revolution. He there changed his name to Milroy, The Milroy seed travels in almost every state and Canada. I'm from Indiana, but the largest concentration of Milroys are in western Pennsylvania, where John Milroy fled to.

They can't. I doubt you understand high-end swords. The steel here is of incredible quality, the finish is beautiful. The cheapest functional longsword you can get is perhaps $150, and that will be simplistic, possibly ugly, heavy, unbalanced, etc. Albion swords have a heavy price for a good reason.

1 minute and 40 seconds talking about functionality and like four minutes of contextualization and another four about it's looks? What kind of joke is this? I can see how gorgeus it is, that's what the visual part of the recording is for! Say something more about how it handles. Does it perform better cutting or stabbing? How is the balance? Does the crossguard geometry improve the murder strokes penetration? I know it handles "good" or even "excellent", it's a fucking albion!

The O'Donnell family are connected strongly to the Gallowglass. They were the kings of modern day Donegal. Look up Red Hugh O'Donnell II on Wikipedia. His mother was a MacDonald from Scotland and payed for many Redshank mercenaries to aid O'Donnell. He started the Nine Years War and O'Neill eventually united with him and also supplied O'Donnell with thousands of Spanish soldiers. Unlike O'Neill Red Hugh did not flee but was was poisoned. He also left a substantial DNA imprint on Ireland
