Thank you for this information; very helpful. For dinner I most often eat soups that I make and freeze. These are mostly vegetable and bean with less amounts of chicken or beef; sometimes I include some pasta or brown basmati rice or barley in the soups. Other times an 'imported from Italy' pasta and sauce both made the Italian way to include tomato, Pepper, cayenne sprinkles and garlic. . Some Friday nights I eat a bison or grass-fed beef burger (w/o the bun) with a few fries roasted in Xtra virgin coconut oil. The burger would include lettuce, tomato, onions, and home made fermented pickles. Oh, and raw milk cheese to melt.
Hello from Saskatchewan! I just found your channel, and I'm so glad I did! I was researching the Mediterranean diet, bc I need to eat healthy, and I need to lose weight. I'm at 275 pounds, and my goal is to lose 105 lbs. I love that you don't just tell us what to eat, and why, but you provide lots of delicious looking recipes as well. Thank you for making my journey easier 🙂
You present a lot of useful information clearly explained. I have lived in Italy at different times, and for long periods. Currently I've been here for the past 13 years. It felt good to hear that you eat pasta five or so times a week, because I keep trying to reduce the number of times I do so, but find it very difficult, since it's one of my favorite foods! In my region, Puglia, they consume a lot of delicious cheese as well, but I have been able to cut back on that almost completely, although I always yearn for it.😅
I really like the Italian way of eating in courses, and try to this regularly myself. I am trying to have a lot more plant based and seafood based dinners.
I was recently diagnosed with heart failure and told to follow a Mediterranean diet. I have to eat low salt, low potassium, low fat and high fiber. WHAT? It can be very confusing. Your videos make it seem easier to understand and do. Thank you!
I’m so glad you’re finding the videos useful. It’s easy for us doctors to give recommendations, but takes more time to explain what it means! Feel free to ask me any questions that come up for you. If you want to see a specific video, do let me know :)
Hi Dr. Anna, Love your videos. Thank you. I have been encouraged by my doctor to eat the Mediterranean way (because of inflammation). However, the problem I'm having is I have IBS and can't eat the foods in this diet, like garlic, onions, beans and lentils. I have to keep finding substitutes. I get frustrated. Any suggestions? It would be nice to see a video on how to combine the Mediterranean diet a low Fodmaps diet. Especially for us seniors :)
Hi Mollyann - I am so glad you’re finding the videos useful! And thank you for the fabulous suggestion. I know you are not alone, lots of folks need to follow low FODMAPs approach. Great suggestion. I’ll be sure to make a video about this soon :)
Hey molly, for someone who was on this diet years ago with severe IBS. (I have had surgeries my whole like to repair damage). I can say that while I was eating a Mediterranean diet that my body was able to tolerate garlic, onion and beans the longer I was on the diet. Once I was eating this way for over 6 months. I slowly incorporated garlic, onions and beans because the diet as a whole decreased so much inflammation in my body that those foods did not irritate my stomach. I am not in no way saying that it will be the same for you but keep in mind that our bodies do amazing things and changing our lifestyles can allow us to eat things we never thought we could! Good luck on your food journey!
Wow. Just wow! Having your own personal journey with your unique experience, you can give insights I cannot. Thank you for your contribution to our community - I’m sure MANY will benefit positively. And congratulations on your own health successes!
This is such an excellent question and one I am making a new video about (stay tuned!). In general, the more fiber a carbohydrate has, the less of a spike in blood sugar it will cause. That is a more important factor for diabetes than only total number of grams of carb in a food - what counts is what and how long it takes for that sugar to reach your blood. If that sounds confusing, don’t worry- I’ll make sure to cover the topic well!
Hi, I am enjoying.a lot your content. The mediterranean diet always attracted me as it matches a lot with my taste preferences. I am confused about dairy in the Mediterranean diet. Is it consumed in low quantities, or is it the type/quality of dairy which matters? Thank you.
This is an excellent question! Dairy is consumed in much lesser amounts than in a typical western diet. Most common sources are thinks like yogurt, feta, and hard cheeses (Parmesan, Asiago, pecorino). Focusing on healthy foods, I suggest that people try to focus their dairy to the higher protein dairy sources (yogurt, cottage cheese, even ricotta).
Welcome aboard!! So glad to have you with us, you’re going to love this approach to food - and life! Please ask any questions that come up for you ☺️ I’m always happy to make videos explaining new concepts
This is a good question…. I’m not sure there is any way of proving which is healthier, since it’s more about someone’s diet overall. Pasta from grains is not an unhealthy food- how pasta is prepared will dramatically affect the health qualities of the dish. Think of if like this: there is a huge difference between linguini with olive oil garlic and clams than American style mac and cheese
