I think it’s crazy how some random stranger across the world can write a song that perfectly describes what you’re going through. It’s uncanny how much each little line is poignant and cuts me a little bit when I hear it because it’s so painfully true. I genuinely never learned to dance so I thought I would be cheeky and listen, but you ripped my heart out with how exact this is to what I think and feel; even how I would word it or interpret this in my own perspective

As a human who gets affixed to certain songs, certain messages, certain rhythms, so on and so forth, this song has so much for me personally. Reminds me of my ex, River, first of all. Now, I’m across the country. Moved to Cali to get away from it all, truth be told. The alcoholism. The weather he speaks of. The wrecklessness. And now that it has been a couple of years, I still miss her, knowing that I’d go back to Florida of all states if she only wanted me to be there. Speaks so much of how us humans move and migrate. Out of tune. Unsure of where we belong. Unsure of who to serve here in this reality. Started dating someone afterwards for a few months. And I would’ve stayed there in Jax if I felt like I should have. But I listened to my heart, moved here to Cali, and I married my one true love. Someone who will help me carry this burden of everything through the rest of this existence. Doing all the things. Keeping light. Sharing light.

This is an underrated gem. Incredible song 🙏🏻

I know that art and music is often left up to interpretation of the listener. However, I want to emphasize how deep this cuts as a musician. God this song destroyed me. This is the kinda self expression I’ve strived for so many times and rarely I hit it slightly but this song is a goddamn masterpiece. I think the original was great but this right here is one of those underrated melancholic iconic songs. This hits me so deep because it touches on things I’ve dealt with my whole life ( at least the way I hear it) I’ll elaborate below. “Kids dressed up like Mormons, not sure if it’s irony “ Idk if he meant this to be as deep as it hit me but I’ll go into detail. So of course Mormons aren’t supposed to dress up for Halloween and wear masks it’s against their religion in some ways. Their whole religion is very contextual as well when it comes to addictive substances like sugar for one. Halloween we go out for trick or treating to get candy which would be odd to see a buncha kids dressed up as mormons collecting candy. But to me this is a social commentary on the blurred lines of meme culture “ not sure if irony “ reminds me of that “fry” meme from “futurama “. There’s a disconnect in meme culture sometimes where we minimize the true nature of our reality and it sometimes can become a louder voice and be a slippery slope into abuse or desensitization leading to abusive or problematic behavior. Without many even realizing it. This to me sounds like someone who noticed this and it’s an inner thought . Which reminds me of cancel culture and cultural appropriation in some ways, sorta like an unspoken commentary on what’s deemed appropriate and inappropriate and the double standards that can sometimes come with that. This line to start off this song is such a fitting and perfect example for the train of thought a struggling artist today would have ( I can heavily relate). Which I feel is setting the tone of the lens you can view the rest of the song through . Like the rest of the world is wearing rose colored glasses and the artist is wearing X-ray glasses. “Double Casamigos hiding in the balcony “ Once again excellent writing! The play on words and double meaning is exceptional at its least here. The ability this man has to say so much with so little is a true gift to behold. So it’s of course referring to alcohol , alcoholism, substance abuse, addiction and numbing yourself to the pain… but I also hear that there is a group meaning 2 or more individuals contributing to each others substance abuse and all of them hiding it from everyone else. Peer pressure stemming from trauma bonding and contributing to their addiction collectively. “Send me your location, I’ll send you a selfie.” Hookup culture. It’s delusions, it’s contradictory nature at times, double standards and unreciprocated expectations etc. The thought that someone anyone on the other end would except you to reveal where you are before showing you their picture is just a red flag and also could be they have no intention of hurting you but have the same intention as the other person in hooking up but it comes across as deceptive on both sides. As a bi man who’s used hookup sites I can 100% say this is the problematic and often dangerous reality of hookup culture that is too often ignored. “Babe this dream I had it feels like it might ruin me. “ There’s so so much in this entire song I could go on and on about as to why I genuinely believe it’s an underrated anthem for our generation but for the sake of “ brevity “ I digress. Speaking to a significant other about their goals and aspirations , or an actual dream / sorta premonition about their life’s goals in a dream. “ find what you love and let it kill you “ is what this reminds me of. As a musician a struggling one at that, this is when the tears started flowing. A dream I can’t let go as it is every piece of me. “ and everyone’s acting like it’s so cool, and everyone’s saying this is so you!” This is speaking on all the aforementioned as if to say “ they have no idea how it really feels and how they really look in their ignorance and confidence in what they think they know about me” “There has to be better shit to give a shit about ! “ Could be inner dialogue trying to find something with more substance and meaning or could be pleading with the person who says what is said in the pre chorus to the one singing. In that he’s saying “ this is bigger than all that! Bigger than me, bigger than you bigger than this dream, bigger than what me and you think we know ! “ instead of wondering of what they think about me now” With the aforementioned observation of the previous line in the chorus in mind in its possible double meaning. “ I can’t give a shit what they think I have a higher calling and purpose to attend to than acceptance of haters or naysayers!” Wether he’s saying it to himself or someone else. “The things that I don’t know could fill a million fucking houses!” Expressing humility. Observing lack of humility in others who always seem to be so certain. Lack of humility and empathy in our culture today being a plague that 100% is the root cause of so much suffering, abuse, mistreatment and misunderstanding. Steals the voices away of those who don’t have one at times. “ what do I know , what do you know? Try to imagine how much you don’t know in comparison, you know a finite and measurable amount of things but the amount you are ignorant of is actually infinite so before you go casting stones assume you don’t know because … “ “ I never learned to dance “ An example of his ignorance and uncertainty in trying to shatter the delusion projection of people may see him , how he sees himself and others and how everyone is missing pieces to a much larger puzzle. It also reminds me of an Alan watts excerpt where he is talking about the meaning of life and using music and dancing as metaphor/allegory to make a point as it pertains to that subject. I’ll paraphrase below: “ the point of life or the meaning rather is not one single goal or achievement or purpose, it’s a journey and in that journey we find meaning through the suffering. People spend their whole lives chasing what others tell them is the right path to happiness, betting on suffering as an investment for their future happiness … and forty/fifty some odd years down the road when they complete their happiness/fulfillment journey they find they feel the same way they always felt. They feel there was a great deception or trick played on them and there was! Because life like music is never about the beginning middle or end it’s the whollleee shindig …. imagine going to see a musician or orchestra perform and all they played was one crashing chord and that was the end?! The confusion and outrage that would ensue would be monumental! The point of music is not a single note and it’s not even music itself , it’s the singing and dancing to that music that gives it its Purpose and meaning. So your whole life you spent chasing after something to fulfill you meaning and purpose when you missed the point the whole way along. You were supposed to dance. “ This could be that he had this realization, the person he’s speaking to did, or that he’s saying this out loud to either say “ I’m not enjoying life “ or that “ you aren’t enjoying life in your judgmental arrogance misplaced certainty “ or “ here’s on example of something I don’t know out of infinity “ soooo much more can be derived from this one monumental statement and that’s what makes it the perfect title! So beautiful! This took so long to type out and I’ll do an analysis of the second verse if this is received well… or there’s a demand for it in someway , not that my sole perspective alone is the word of god or any thing because after all just like you and anyone else “ the things that I don’t know could fill a million fucking houses” and “ I never learned to dance, but I still sure as hell will try so that there’s something worth looking back at” and partly why I did this is for that reason alone. You don’t need to “ learn to dance “ just dance , wether it’s exceptional or clumsy at least you took the time to enjoy yourself and be free ❤️ don’t forget to dance ❤️ I’m also working on my own acoustic cover of this song and plan to post it on here and/or TikTok ( where I found this and am so grateful to have had the privilege to experience!) if you’re interested ( this is also to the artist himself as well ) then I hopefully should be posting it sometime soon.
