Hey Brent, I can't seem to find good any OD green web gear for one shepherd, do you know any were I can find some that Isn't to pricey? still have 1 year before I can go tho. Thanks for that and thank you for your service!!!
I first bought a medium ALICE pack back in 1990 from a surplus store, used it in basic training ( british army ) as we were still using the old 58 pattern webbing along with the totally useless large pack. We were encouraged to buy our own rucksacks and was glad I got one. I used it for years and picked up a frame for it in a PX store in Germany. It went on 3 tours of Bosnia and a tour of kosovo with me and never let me down. 29 years later and I still have it 😊 built to last in my opinion
@@scotiushobius I have both, the large was used for lugging the majority of my kit but day to day I used the medium. It carried everything I needed no problem. The large is good but when it's full it just sits there, like a giant green lump. Get a medium. For the large I'd look at something else ( I went back to using my issue PLCE one)
Oh wow they were still using the old large packs, I wouldn't have guessed they were hanging around. I have 5 of them in my collection never used one though.
The irony is the newest pack for the Corps, the FILBE, has been failing recently. Since folks are beating the war-with-Russia drums again, the Corps has been doing a lot more arctic training in Norway and Alaska, and the plastic frames are snapping in the cold. Supposedly they are bringing out a reinforced version. Wonder how many grunts are just going to use the old LG ALICE? Something a lot of people don't know is that the side pockets on the ALICE packs were tunneled like that to carry your cross country skis for arctic warfare use. Another complaint about the packs is they don't carry heavy weight as well as the new packs. But folks forget that these were designed when grunts mostly walked into combat. THey were supposed to be used along with belt gear, which is where all your heavy stuff, like ammo, grenades, e-tool, canteen, etc were carried, not in the pack. If one wants a milsurp hiking pack, then there is no better than the ILBE, as it's literally an Arc'Teryx Bora 80 hiking pack in MARPAT. Of course, the corps ditched it because it was horrific when wearing armor, making it a crappy combat pack.
The newer frames were intended to flex with the wearer's movement, to enhance comfort. Of course, flex means fatigue and plastic generally does not like cold.
When I joined the Corps, all we had was the alice pack, and i loved it. Eventually, it was replaced with the molle pack which i used in Iraq. I’ve recently re-enlisted after a 9-year break(army this time; too old to go back to the marines) and i use a filbe pack with alice frame and it’s holding up pretty well. I don’t care much for the UCP gear they issue us. As a matter of fact, i buy most of my gear i use in the field.
Current 0311 here- A lot of dudes use the Alice frame and straps with the new FILBE packs. Personally I use an Alice frame with Tac Tailor straps. I feel that it sits better with body armor vs the new plastic frames. There really isn't any modding to do to the pack IOT use the Alice frame. I just throw in some zip ties to tighten things up here and there and it works great for me.
You are one squared a way marine 0331! You know sh!+ front and back old school and new school. I can see the love of country, corps and men under your charge. Thank you again.
@@Brent0331 if I were 2 get an ALICE (All-Purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment) Pack I'd rather go with the more Medium Sized 1 since those lighter than the Large Sized!
Recon Marine from the 80's. We would adjust which ruck we used based on length of mission. Typically we used the medium without the frame, but the large was the most common one we used. They jumped well, carried everything we needed with room left to spare (sometimes....). From 91-2010 I was in the Army Light Infantry, and used my gear from the Marines without fail. Well done and Semper Fi.
That's the most comprehensive video I've ever seen on the ALICE rucksack. Really appreciated that you included the versatility of the ALICE frame to hump ammo, water, rations, and fuel. There are some impressive rucksacks issued and/or on the market, but I'm not convinced they are as strong, durable, or as versatile as the ALICE medium and large rucksack with frame. Plus, there are so many ways to upgrade and improve this battle proven system! Personally, I have two "Hellcat M-ALICE" by Tactical Tailor with the improved tube frame...but at its very core, it's still nothing but an ALICE rucksack. Brilliant.
Thanks brother, I've been wanting to do this video for a long time. As stupid as it sounds I was actually waiting for ONE clip of me putting a snow pack cover on a alice pack in the snow. I did the one in the desert so I thought it would be cool to have a clip of putting on each cover in its different environment. Problem is it hasn't snowed here in like 3 years! I decided to give up on my snow hopes and just film. Ha
@@Brent0331 When mother nature decides not to help, there's not much you can do about it. Thanks for doing this vid though, it convinced me to pick one up. It looks a lot more breathable than the current pack, especially with the frame. My problem with my current pack is how hot my back gets when hiking, it looks like the frame makes it so it only contacts your back at the padding. Is that the case? If so, that's exactly what I'm looking for. How much of a difference in balance and weight is there between medium and large?
@@CtrlAltRetreat There's definitely a "pocket" in between the pad and the top of the pack on your back. I think this is ideal for accommodating gear like a camelbak. The large ALICE is quiet a bit bigger, however its not really that much "heavier" per say. These packs are made out of a tough nylon material that is very light unlike the modern day cordura packs today. These are combat packs though, if weight is the biggest selling point for you you can get a ridiculously light civilian pack that is guaranteed to not hurt a squire if you drop it on it. Those type of packs wont last the rigors of humping and bushwhacking through heavily wooded though.
@@Brent0331 Thanks for the response Brent. Everything you've said really reinforces that i should give it a try. I've seen some of those ultralight packs and they make me worry about holes in my pocket book as much as in the pack material if it snags on nearby branches. The pack board is a big deal for me. I always find floppy packs feel much heavier than they are. A pack that i can tighten down onto a frame so and can carry a camel bak sounds fantastic. I think it's worth a shot and a pack frame and shelf is something that would make carrying a Jerry can a few miles a bit less unpleasant. Lord knows i wouldn't want to do that again. Better to have and not need though.
@@CtrlAltRetreat Hey Bud. I have an UL pack called Jam II by Golite. It had cost me around $100 at the time. Its a great framless pack. Has held enough food and h2o plus all of my gear including a bear canister for up to 9 days on the JMT. I usually carry for a 3-5 day trip under 25 lbs. I recently put together an ALICE pack and its a totally a different bird. Much tougher and built with combat in mind. More flexible for all sorts of needs. Plus if you need to use the Jam , at 22 oz you can put it in the Alice pack for urban dress. Best of luck!!
Current 11B. Right now I've been using a medium alice commo ruck with the longer woodland straps for the field and its awesome. Ive personally found it to be way more comfortable and versatile than the OCP medium ruck. The waist belt doesn't get used because its pretty much pointless. A lot of people don't realize the outer pockets have pass throughs behind them.
I love all things Alice. Pistol belt and y suspenders. I use the medium LC2 as my war bag in LE. It’s perfect it won’t allow me to carry to much bullshit like other dudes. Extra clothing essentials in a ranger roll, food, water, meds boorets (bullets), and the most important neck pillow!! Love you Alice!!
I always bring too much crap if I have the large ALICE. Medium is a great pack with tons of room. The frame is also great in hot weather for encouraging air flow over your back.
Great Instructional Video. I'm 68 yrs old and to this day I carry my Large Alice Pack. I have it set up for bug out, bug in, or just as a get home bag. It goes with me anytime and every time I'm in my vehicle. If I need to hump it, it's there for me with all the gear I need to survive for quite sometime. And yes that includes a weapon with plenty of ammo. Again that was a great video.
great info. i never did use the alice frame. didn't realize there was alice 1 and alice 2 generations. never realized the top lid had velcro for a hidden compartment. a buddy got an alice cover and used it as a spare tire cover for his jeep. looked pretty cool.
Brent, I know i am late to the party. How do the alice packs work with modern body armor(6094, JPC, etc)? If not well, what pack do you recommend for use with armor?
Old Eagle Scout here. I have used a lot of backpacks. ALICE packs, civilian internal frame mountaineering packs, external frame backpacks, ultralight backpacks. I first used medium sized ALICE packs in the early eighties. Where I think ALICE packs really shine is when you are going off trail and off road foot travel. Like long distance backpacking off trail using land navigation techniques like compass and large scale topo maps. ALICE packs also really shine when you are humping in extremely rugged terrain where you need to maintain a lower center of gravity to maintain balance...so you can scramble over rocks, logs, etc. Low center of gravity equals safer movement and less chance of ankle sprains, knee injuries. ALICE packs are also just plain bomb proof. If I was going to travel exclusively on trails or roads on the other hand, Id choose a civilian external frame backpack with a big comfortable hio belt where your center of gravity is going to be high.
Hi Brent, l have both, the Large and the Medium ALICE Pack. Like each. Because l am an civilian my needs may differ, but it´s fun and endless options to modify these Packs for Camping and Hiking. l also got lucky to have enough ALICE Gear like Canteens and so on, and a lot of MOLLE ll stuff as well. Here in Germany is a big Market for US Surplus Gear. l like that stuff and l am well equiped :-) Thank´s for your great and informative videos, l like that. Best regards from Germany, Torsten
The opening is very funny. I'm a Japanese U.S. Army fan. Learning about the invasion of Grenada. The LC-1 bag is very cool! Thanks for the helpful video !!! Sorry my bad english.
Brent because of your video I went out and got me an Alice pack and frame and put them together. Took it out on a hike on my vacation to Colorado Springs. I love it! Would you be able to do a video showing what you what pack and how you pack it? Thanks for your vidz and thank you for serving your country! Also thanks for continuing to serve us with you great content. God bless
ALICE pack tends to hang way back and load weight shifts low. Not conducive to high tight weight center of gravity. You get way more tired and tired quicker with these - especially the ALICE large, than you do with good civilian packs. But they ARE versatile.
@@crumply5959 The US Marines came something close to it. It was called the M1941 Pack System. It was exclusively issued to the Marines during WWII till mid Vietnam. The Marines got smart when the M1967 and later ALICE came about. Use Army shit and save money.
I'm a product of my times 11b back in the 90's, I love the large alice pack have no interest in giving it up for anything else.(If it works for me I stick with it!)
I subscribed 36 hours ago and have watched 3 videos, I have learned more here than in years of similar videos. BTW my ALICE packs were set up wrong, not anymore thank you!
Great, comprehensive video. I just completed my first 'tactical 5K' carrying 75lbs and I made a big mistake attempting that without a frame. I wanted to learn more about ALICE packs and this video covered everything in detail. Thank you!
I spent 25 years on the US Marine Corps and still swear by this pack and still own one. Never had one break from the Artics of Norway and Alaska to the deserts .
We used ALICEs in boot camp and the quick release on mine would never stay connected. You know how DIs are, I had to hump through all of our field training holding on to my shoulder strap so as to keep it on my back, LOL. Every time I'd let go of it to do something, there goes my pack. Oh well, good times still. Builds Character, right? Great video, thanks for sharing. Oorah!!
I love the ALICE. I’ve been in the Army for 10 years, on jump status for 9 straight years. A lot of guys still use these when we jump combat equipment. I have both the medium and large.
Thank you brother that was incredibly helpful👍 I got a large Alice pack and frame as part of a trade. All the straps were completely FUBAR beyond recognition and all attached wrong🤦
Itd be nice to get someone with a HAM license that could be able to build, and display a Pack style set up that can utilize that PRC-77 pocket, and not look like a ball of yarn with a battery and head unit in a stuff sack.
You do some good videos, Devil Dog. When I was a Dragon gunner (0351) we were automatically issued large (mountain, we called them) Alice packs, in order to have room for the sights and all the other crap. When I was later an Arty officer, I just bought a mountain pack, just to have the extra room and not have to stuff 10 pounds of shit into a five pound bag (not that we ever humped much anyway). The later packs were too damned complicated, made for some civilian mountain hike or something. I liked the Alice pack because it was simple and versatile. S/F !
You can carry sniper on that shelf. He will be able to see over objects. You going away with a dude on your back would be a bizzare ending of the video
Hated them. Grew up in southern Oregon doing 4 season backpacking, went to basic in 85. I would have given anything to dump my Alice pack for my civilian jansport. Weight distribution was horrible. Padding at load bearing points was insufficient. Load balance was ridiculously off. A pair of boots with decent arch support would have been good too!
Freaking love this video THANKS A TON , your time spent to share this will not be taken for granted by me sir 👍 I'm looking for a large ALICE with frame and planning to build a hiking /bushcraft pack. I need everything but knives LOL got plenty of blades .
Right before I got out in 2012, my unit was prepping for future deployments to Afghanistan. Weapons Platoon came up with a way to carry 4-5 M72 LAWs using the ALICE frame and shelf.
Hey Partner, you did an excellent job on this video! I normally don't care for videos this long but this one is info, not somebody spouting garbage. I do mix the older and newer material. I love the molle sustainment pouches and usually add at least one. Perfect size to pack about 4 mres in. One point I would like to add, I like to use heavy duty zip ties in place of Alice clips. I've had Alice clips come loose on me and if the gear is something you always carry the same way, there's no need for the quick detach clip. You also save a little weight, not a lot but the best way to save 5 pounds is find a couple dozen places to loose a few ounces. Great video! Take Care and be safe, John
Hi Brent, yet again I am not getting notifications from your channel despite I have it set to “all notifications”. Maybe you were enlisted to juwtube’s manipulation lists. Mechanism that was revealed by ex employee via project veritas. I will watch your presentation in the morning but I bet it is excellent as always 👍
Brent0331 I didn’t get notified about your reply as well. Not surprising if you think abut it. You do put quality content that is against firm beliefs of liberals and neocons. They suppress anything that can help people to stop being sheep. Have you heard they try again to ban body armor? Take care brother I will backup some of your videos just in case 💪🏻
Okay, I've had the Large pack for many years now, bought it off a friend who got himself a "real" rucksack. I only go on 2-3 day trips but still manage to pack insane amounts of seemingly useless gear and something always felt a bit off. Today I found out two things: 1 - I never had an idea that the top flap was openable and 2 - the carrying straps were on the wrong way. I'm a chubby staff sergeant and the straps always were hell bent trying to cut my sides in half. Now I kind of want to find out if switching the straps give a better performance lugging shit across Finnish forests. Also need to stitch the center pouch back together as it gave up some time ago. But thank you Brent for this very informational video, much appreciated.
Any tips for guys with taller torsos running Alice frames? You seem to not have an issue with it, but I know many find the fixed frame uncomfortable as it's a bit too short for their torso. Simply lengthen the shoulder straps and drop the pack?
Tactical Taylor sells a welded tubular aluminum frame for their Malice packs that will fit perfectly on an Alice. Weight is 1 OZ more than stock, but at least twice as durable. Cost is only 80 buck.
I've had a medium LC1 with frame since I was 10yrs old and used the frame to carry my pack basket for trapping too. I also learned a square bucket with a lid worked very well for carrying traps or hauling my days catch out of the woods too.
I appreciate your video! After watching I am more knowledgeable about both my Large and Medium packs. From your video I learned that the shoulder straps were on the wrong side. It feels better now. I appreciate your knowledge and instruction style. 😊
i love the alice pack. i wore it on hundreds of adventures when i lived in the mt hood forest for 15 years. i just found a medium camo alice pack used at a flea market in great shape. army issue. not some fake. it was 15 bucks. what a steal.
Great video! Like you, I’m a big fan of the ALICE packs and the entire ALICE system for that matter. Tough, reliable, inexpensive and easy to find replacement parts for. What more could a budget minded warrior ask for! Keep up with the great videos! ⚓️🇺🇸
Army airborne here. Myself and a few other still opt to use ALICE/MALICE packs over the MOLLE 4K and Large MOLLE. Especially with the tactical tailor padding, it’s an absolute gem of a pack. The newer rucks are heavier, the frames are fragile, and many guys are developing serious hip and back issues Leave it to the military to fix what isn’t broken
Especially Large: Transfers weight poorly. Puts weight low and OUT instead of high and tight to you. Very fatiguing. Also, watching you. Excellent tutorial; but I miss being so young and strong as I used to be!! W/ water and ammo HEAVY! Hahahaaa
Does HMAK mean anything in America? I Saw it on the jerrycan. In the danish Army, all parts was delivered from “Hærens MAterial Komando” meaning “Army material Company”. Good video, and to the point!!
issued a medium ALICE during my survival course with the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. Gotta say, they really are used everywhere and by everyone, even kids in my case! Mine was probably on it's tenth owner but that didn't matter, I was able to jerry rig the frame to the actual pack with a excessive amount of cordage, and also luckily everything's modular so I was able to replace my shoulder strap and my waist strap with ease
I like mine. I replaced the waist belt with a load carrier belt that makes it ride on my hips better and I keep a couple East German AK-47 MAG POUCHES. The ALICE pack straps are pretty good but I like to throw a couple of stitches in that quick release. I've broken plenty because I put them on my Stürmgepack and my Swiss Army rucksack.
I have a large LC1 that has the LC2 type buckles. I wonder if that's a late LC1. Pretty sure it wasn't modified. We lost a guy downrange and it was his from Bragg CIF. I tried to turn it in, but they wouldn't take it when I was turning in mine. They write off a soldiers gear when they are killed or if it's medical related, so there is no longer anything on the books to be turned in. At the time, I didn't want the gear since I didn't need any extra stuff to store. But I'm glad I kept it. When my unit got the new molle packs (I was in 2000-2004), I just left it in the box. I already had my alice pack set up like I wanted it, and they are virtually indestructible, as you say. I still use it for rucking and I've used it on several camping/hiking trips. No, they are all Gucci like the stuff from REI, and it's probably not what you want to do a through-hike, but I've had tons of stuff in it and beat the crap out if it, as many others have as well. I was in the airborne and had an opportunity to do some test jumps for a new chute SF was adopting (the SF10) from the forest service (FS14). I had to put about 150+# in it to achieve a total weight of 300# for the combat equipment jumps. They had to validate the performance with heavy loads, or something like that. The good old Alice pack worked like a champ.
Great video. My three tour Vietnam Vet Plt. Sgt. taught us use 55O cord instead of the belt on the kidney pad - A weave / knot pattern- Much more cushion on your lower back. We were not allowed to use kidney belts. You could not drop your pack quick enough. I was an RTO and was screwed on that ability anyway. My stuff was all LC - 1 apparently. I go on hunts in my native Georgia that last five days usually by myself. I still carry my ALICE pack (lg)
I was lucky enough to join the USMC in June 1998 and have the LC-2 issued through boot and about a year into the FMF. In mid/late 1999 we received the POS MOLLE system. ALICE was a leftover blessing from the Nam era having equipment that worked albeit not ergonomic but was pretty much indestructible from the fragile MOLLE. THE DoD done the military a HUGE disservice by giving govt contracts to affiliated companies to fix what is not broken. Combat packs are not hiking packs vice versus.
Brent you gungy mutha fo!!! You’re not in the suck anymore! 😂😂😂 and neither am I yet here I find myself geeking out on the 4 year old video! Ah good times and boy I miss it. I’m in my mid fifties and I’m still buying all this gear to add to my collection of what I tactically acquired whenI was on active duty. Not only that I have WWII gear, Korea era gear, Vietnam era and modern molle and FILBE. What do I think is going to happen?! I think I’ll get recalled and deployed with my old ass. 😂 Anyway, it’s great stuff brother. I enjoy watching and remembering and I’ve learned from you too. Ready for World War Z! My boy just joined the Corps last April. I send him your vids so all that knowledge can be transferred to the next generation. Times change and even though the Marine Corps is big on tradition, the big push on the woke bs in the services, a lot of knowledge and experience is being tossed to the way side. Semper Fi brother!
Because of this video, I purchased a medium Alice pack! And I love it, ridiculous how versatile it still is. Can I use a ballistic plastic molle frame on my medium Alice pack?
Good video. I find it is funny that in 2019 people are still making videos about ALICE. A great budget waterproofing method is to just use trash bags as dry bags. I prefer a drum liner as they are much thicker.
Legendary Pack Found a Large ALICE at a surplus shop with a still shiny frame, no sewn holes, kidney strap and everything. Was worried that they hit over the head with almost $100 price tag, but after seeing the versatility, longevity, and overall admirable design of this pack, I regret the fact that it wasn't the first pack I ever bought. Saw some moron's video long ago about how uncomfortable and useless these packs are. I moved everything from my old bag to the ALICE, and the frame alone makes all the difference. Feels like I'm carrying 30% less, and shoulder pain is gone. Makes me sad to think that these packs are no longer being produced as they were. Only aftermarket wannabes... glad I got one. Legendary Pack.
I got one for 40 euros from a friend, and I must say its the most comfortable pack I have carried around. Dont know why, but it just feels nice on your back even when compared to more modern backpacks (I have a decent large civilian tourist pack as well).
Those add on pouches were a U.S.Cavalry product. I've still got 2 side pouches. The U.S. butt pack makes a good top pouch. Just run the straps through the clip bars.
You should NOT cut the metal buckles off your Alice packs. You can easily adapt plastic buckles to them with zip ties. Plastic buckles WILL break. Just a matter of time. The metal fasteners are a pain but they're a great fallback option in the field
Never served. But used alot of packs in my preparedness group. Went old school with my LC -1 and havnt looked back. Just need to upgrade my straps to molle 2
Used Alice gear back in the 70s and 80s in the field when I was in the Air Force. Alice gear is nuke proof and tough as hell. Own a medium and large pack now and are great for backpacking.
For assault pack mode on the Alice 2.😢 The frame mounting straps will still mate up to the bars on sides of the pack. Works, if you want it. For using with the frame, 550 cord through the same web bar will hold it tight. Or get an Alice mini, which is a solution in search of a problem.
