Chaka Khan is by her own right "Queen of Funk", like Aretha was the "Queen of Soul", Donna Summer was the "Queen of Disco" and Tina Turner was the "Queen of Rock 'N' Roll". There aren't much space for other queens except maybe for Gladys Knight, the legitimate "Empress of Soul". Period. Natalie Cole is a whole different story, she also managed to become an international household name by her own right, with an interesting diversed back catalog too...
@Powlee07 Wikipedia says they had 1 obscure song that charted in the 60s. That gave them very little notoriety. In fact, when Chaka came along in the 70s, most of the band members had changed from the 60s were gone. The band might have launched her career, but it was Chaka who took them to stardom. So much so Stevie Wonder decided to collaborate with Khan to write one of their signature hits. This pushed the band to a new success and successful longevity they’d not had before..
This was the first lick I ever heard from the Empress of FUNK while blasting Soul Train on Saturday afternoon when I was 10 years old. It completely blew my mind. I wore out 3 copies of this album playing it non-stop on the record player. It was LOVE instantaneously. And still is. Much love, peace, and respect Miss Khan, the grooviest person I have ever experienced. ✌🎗⚓
I'll admit that during this time that coincided with my UCLA years, most people that new me or of me new that Chaka was my lady at least in my mind musically while I was on the dance floor at least, she really did it FOR ME!!!!!!!!!!! And Rufus was one of my favorite musical groups.

I seen Rufus live 1977 or 78 in Kalamazoo MI $7 general admission . After entry we would always work our way to the front row next to the stage so close we could feel the sweat. Strange *NO SHOTS FIRED* Only boy meets girl days.
Seen her perform in Baltimore about 1977-78.. Me and Mickey. They found the beverage we tried to bring along. It was different funky good time. Almost Spiritual....

😆 LOL. As great as this is it's ashamed their not really singing it. Back then they wanted it to be perfect for those watching on TV. This is still awesome. Have a Good Time is my jam. That's what you call music. I'm obsessed with how she came to start singing with them. This band was originally an all white band in the 60s.
@@ericboswell8863 She did do both as long as she could, The record company was to blame for their split, and Rufus members became jealous, when all the attention was focused on Chaka.
