MEEK'S CUTOFF
The year is 1845, the earliest days of the Oregon Trail, and a wagon team of three families has hired the mountain man Stephen Meek to guide them over the Cascade Mountains. Claiming to know a short cut, Meek leads the group on an unmarked path across the high plain desert, only to become lost in the dry rock and sage. Over the coming days, the emigrants must face the scourges of hunger, thirst and their own lack of faith in each other's instincts for survival. When a Native American wanderer crosses their path, the emigrants are torn between their trust in a guide who has proven himself unreliable and a man who has always been seen as the natural enemy.

Can't wait to see this film. I'll watch any project Michelle Williams attaches herself to...The cinematography looks beautiful. In my book, Oscilloscope is taking over in the "super cool, super badass department".

Looks like we are missing all of the important events of Meeks cutoff. Like, the hundreds of people in the wagon party. The famous figures in the party. I don’t remember an Indian hostage, but a guide who got them to the dalles. Good grief what is this?

This film comes highly recommended so I wont disagree with anyone as I love low budget films, however why was it shot in 4 by 3?

Asking an artist why he does his art the way he does it is like asking the sun why it comes up and down.

Yeah, except for the fact that artists think about what they do and why and also they can talk... other than that, it's basically identical. I can't guess how this team landed on the decision to shoot 4:3 but there are plenty of reasons to do-so. It evokes a different era of filmmaking - lower budget fare shot on 16mm from back in the day or made-for-tv movies. It could be that it was counterintuitive. The natural inclination when shooting an epic western story is to go 2.35 so you can soak in the scenic vistas. Shooting the same film in 4:3 would catch attention just for going against the grain. Also, there's vertical framing to think about, not just horizontal. I don't think there are any dinosaurs in this movie but Spielberg shot Jurassic Park 1 in 1.85 because the dinos were going to be tall and a super wide aspect ration would leave huge swaths of the frame empty when shooting humans with full dinos. I can't speak on why this director and DP landed on 4:3 but, at the end of the day, the decision caught both of our attentions and we're puzzling over it so perhaps they made the right choice.

@@wayfaringshaman Your analogy is pitifully poor; the kind of remark made by people who know very little - or nothing - about art, or artists for that matter.

@@JJKoester Has anyone in this thread actually seen a Western before..? The film is formatted in the Academy ratio (1.37:1), a standard used in many classic Westerns.
