Jan Krüger is a "genuine," trained in Italy, gladiator living in Germany. He also trains and teaches at Trier Germany's UNESCO listed Roman amphitheater. Currently posting new videos here: • Video
That’s such an awesome amphitheater I went there with my family a couple years ago and it was an amazing experience to go under and see how stuff worked and how it would’ve looked back then.. Great video
One of the best interviews I've seen. Thanks also for showing - based on experience - just how much hard work and training had to, and has to, go in to this.
Let It Gogu no your right and I'm wrong, of course a front flip is the most practical way to get from a to b and those ninja rolls are obviously so much more practical than walking, obviously the more spins you do the more advanced you are !
I was there with an exchange group from Poland, it was awesome, this guy, the Lanista, made us a fantastic presentation, you could feel the passion in the way, he talks about it. He though us also the technics of fighting with this shield, spear and net, I remember it, as it was yesterday
A DAGGER FIGHTER to be precise. Gladius - dagger, the larger would be known as Pompeian gladius or its original name XIPHOS. The large sword would be know as SPATHA.
Provocateur actually, Real gladiators didn't fight in coloseum to the death, thats a common mistake. In truth it was a respected sport game like boxing, the only killing is accidental like 1/10 of the Time.
There's a lot of optimized modern fightstyles out there, so I think this is not a Self Defence fight style at all. but it sure is a good Workout disipline, looks fun, and what I consider the most value, in my opinion, is the Historical Knowlege.
like he said, they more than likely survived. gladiators were investments and weren't thrown away by their trainers. gladiators main goal was to entertain, get cut up a bit, and get stitched up for next time
Haha idiot, say that after you get your ribs broken by being stabbed with a "wooden knife". The only legal metal weapons allowed are only in M1 and Knight Teams Vs* and even then they are made dull and you are not allowed to stab only slash. The stupid ignorant OP bait Troll is not impressed huh
It's due to kickboxing muscle memory, he imagined himself executing a kick. As a a pure boxer that wouldn't happen becauseboxers never give the back to the enemy or you will get rabbit punched.
Gladius, buckler(Sun ray shaped sword catcher design), gauntlet for shield arm.. Full shield is only for open battle field against archers. Helmet should not impair your vision and need only protect the eyes from slash and I would wear a thick scarf around the neck. Weapon hand tends to be my favorite target until a mistake is made and you can generally use your enemies weapon to guide you to target. They should have combined gauntlet and gladius into one to free up the hands for grappeling and other things.
Very good démonstration ! i am french, and i am in the historical reconstitution in the XIVe ! but i like the fighting of Gladiator ! very good work ! Sorry for my english who is bad. :D
I recognize the 3rd century Dura Europos (eastern Syria) rectangular scutum. I have the same since I now reenact a Crisis of the Third Century legionary.
Great job done by this remarkable man. When I think of Gladiators and what they went through and look at the world now I don't see many changes. We clothe men in beautiful outfits, fill them up with mainly falsehoods of bravery as in bravery equated with death which is completely wrong, and they die. The Gladiators were brave men for sure, but their death was pointlessly gruesome and tragic. I wish I could time travel, though, and go back and see how mankind has evolved through the ages. Until that impossibility becomes real I will go with we have learned nothing. The modern world is the worst man has ever been. I wish the 21st century hadn't been a fucking dark age nightmare, but we are stuck with a lot of idiotic people and stupid means you get a lot of power intelligent and sensitive means people hate you. As you can tell we've learned nothing at all.
One thing that I hate is when people try to relate or contrast a separate Asian martial art that they train, with a historical European martial art, when they are completely different combat systems and share practically no similarities . Kickboxing = Gladiatorial combat system, WTF mate!
+Chrominance87 really, it's all using the same human shape, all truly useful martial arts are broadly similar. I also think he more meant that it was a combat sport, like gladiatorial combat was.
Hi, what are the dimensions of the shields at 3:45 and what sort of shield are they supposed to represent from history? Viking shields were circular and Upright shields were usually held with a vertical bar grip -- I've never seen a horizontal bar grip so I'm wondering if there were any historical shields that did it that way.
***** Celtic shields and Roman shield were like that, hit it up on google images and get some good celtic shields, they're formed like that with the horizontal grip
Max Loh wich of the longer shield types are held with an vertical bar? The scutum is held by a horizontal bar and kite/drop shields are held by a straping on the back.
Sometimes it was out of the trainer's hands... the local magistrate or title-bearing person decided the fate of the defeated based on the mood of the crowd
id kill to see a real gladiator fight in ancient rome, eat some popcorn while waiting for the burning of a christian to end so the real bloodshed to begin!
Gladiator actually meant swordsman/ wielder of a gladius as that was what the original (as in the first) gladiators used and what their name is derived from
Those comments belows are embarassing. This is just a historical martial sport. Why they should hurt each others while fighting? Do the karatekas hurt each other? Or do the Kung fu or aikido fighters? Thanks God today there exist something called Human Rights, no one should get injured during sports, works, jobs, et cetera. Things happens, ok, but these are simply accidents. evolve yourselves, men. Wake up. The stone age is gone by so far! :-)
vehrkalia gladiators should be brought back with real weapons and real death instead of some corrida shit torturing bulls that did nothing to deserve this... let humans fight if they want to see some freaking blood and poke sharp swords into eachothers..
+vehrkalia What are you talking about? Sports injuries is a billion dollar business, doctors make FORTUNES treating everything from concussions to broken limbs. Do karate's hurt each other? You bet your ass they do. They're not punching air, they're punching and kicking each other. My brother in law has a black belt in karate, I have seen him with black eyes, he has also gotten his nose broken, and he doesn't even compete, these are injuries he gets while fighting other men. Human rights? LOL, this is SPORT, your goal is to defeat your enemy. Just because boxers hug each other after the match doesn't mean they didn't spend time beating each other up. "The stone age is gone by so far! :-)" Read some books, the Roman gladius is made out of steel. The Romans are history's #1 civilization, Rome is known as the eternal city for a reason. We owe the Romans a lot, and my only problem with this video is that it isn't real. A real gladiator contest might end in injury or death, here there's little chance for either.
+vehrkalia Because he said "This is not a re-enactment group, we're fighting real!".. Now wouldn't you expect some real hurting and fighting if this is how they actually label themselves. "In the FIGHT we are enemies" shall I go on?
***** Posso chiedere se "BARILLA" è il tuo "nick" o il tuo cognome? :) ...e comunque - sì - grazie! Lo sapevo era solo una domanda retorica. Quello che non sapevo era lo "spelling": "Trier"!... :)
I mean maybe hes not a real gladiator because they dont kill each other, but thats kind of a good thing like if you lose or make a mistake your not going to die and you can come back and keep having fun. but has others said earlier gladiator reenactor, not real one.
Gladiators barely fought to the death. Time and money were put into them with gladiator schools so they were barely killed and thumbs down did not mean death
gladiators weren't used in a war as he says they were good at man to man combat however the romans fought in a line of men so they only had to train them to thrust so they could make an army in no-time because training them for man to man combat like he also says takes a 3 years to become effective the roman training could get the same effecencie in months
Actually the gladiators were used in a civil war in the year of the four emperors. Otho did not have enough legions to face Vetellius so gladiators all over Italy were pressed into service.
Gladiator derives from "Gladius" meaning sword. So, originally they could have been "Swordsmen". 🤷♂️ But that's Latin, logic and history tied to words. 🤔 ☕
+Dracusorul Alex why the irony? historically speaking the Germans were the greatest fan of Rome. Heh they even founded their own empire. The holy Roman Empire, who was neither holy nor Roman and not a empire, and guess what, it was held by a Kaiser (Caesar) who was not a Kaiser XD So it make sense that they have gladiators that are not gladiators in a arena that is not an arena :-P
Looks like your fighting with cast arm and leg.. Lol.. But this is awesome tho.. Those Helmets in days must be very weighty.. And you have any Gladiatrix?
