For me, it was the higher the ohms, the brighter sound regardless of the brand of speaker. Second was the more efficient speaker is one with a lighter membrane and for darker sound, a thicker membrane.

Speaker sounds the same regardless of volume. I thought if the volume increases and the membrane is moving more, then it has to move faster and would sound different.

So my question is in a low volume environment would it beneficial to have a less efficient speaker in the Cornell and a different cab with smaller/ possibly less efficient speakers for the Victory, or is it a case of these amps were developed with these speakers and they are best suited. Are bigger speakers louder because they move more air (efficiency and db rating aside) Many thanks Karl

Debunking the "speaker breakup" thing was surprising. It would be cool testing that by taking a 2000w PA amp that will not distort and feed a guitar speaker untill it smokes. I loved blowing up lightbulbs, speakers and capacitors as a kid, that sweet smell :p. Interesting to learn about all the paramaters that define a speakers sound, most notably the consistency in the cone material. Another surprise was that "breaking in" speakers matters after all! What i would like to know know is: How much does it matter? I guess that's not easy to quantify, so another test might be cool!
@JensenSpeakersVideos
@JensenSpeakersVideos 3 года назад
hahaha, as Billy Gibbons said... "Been there, done that!" We blow quite some speakers in our R&D dept, pushing them to death either with applying power and by stressing them mechanically, emulating lifecycles... It's somehow FUN! Breaking in does matter, but you're right, it's hard to define "how much", and it really changes depending on speaker types. There are either a change in the specs, something that is measurable, and a change in feel... and there's no instrument able to measure that!
@markkeneson6806
@markkeneson6806 9 месяцев назад
The part that was debunked about speaker breakup was the misunderstanding by many that overpowering a speaker produces a pleasant sounding speaker breakup. That part is not true and just leads to broken speakers. On the other hand, speaker breakup is a real thing. It is the term to describe the nonlinear frequency response of the speaker cone. It does not require overpowering a speaker to produce speaker breakup.

I trust the workmanship and the history of the Jenson Product. Their speakers always made my car stereo sound fantastic even back before I could afford Hi powered amps. a small amp could make them sound like a million bucks! So I am beating on a 4x12" cab and a 20 watt Vox amp for jamming in my house. Many thanks to the folks at Jenson for making me look so cool and my car sound so good!

Great informative video and facts right from the horse's mouth so to speak. I thought it was interesting that someone asked why is 12" the de-facto standard for guitars. Years ago I bought a 2 X 15" cabinet and a Fender Bandmaster tube amp. This was in the late 70s and at that time I used it for my Farfisa organ, playing classic rock covers. It sounded fantastic. When the Farfisa hit the front end of that amp it could easily overdrive the circuit and develop the coolest harmonics. And that 2 X 15 cab sounded amazing. It had a Utah 15" speaker and a JBL 15". Later I began to use that amp & cabinet with my guitar and I fell in love with the sound. It was definitely different than a 4 X 12 tone. It broke up at a higher volume than 12" speakers would, but it had a beautiful lower midrange. I still use it today. I think it is good to experiment with different size speakers. Love the video so much I subscribed to your channel. Now I'm thinking I need to check out Jensen guitar speakers. What Iganazio revealed is that Jensen is right on top of their game and have a line of guitar speakers that may be better tone wise than the usual suspects.

@JensenSpeakersVideos
@JensenSpeakersVideos 2 года назад
Hey, I'm "not" an EV expert, BUT Vintage EVM12L speakers are in my personal top 3 favorites. A MESA/Boogie 1x12 Thiele Extension loaded with MY own 1980 EVM12L is a mainstay in Jensen's demo room. Since we obviously went a great deal looking into the build specifics that make that speaker so special, I thought of sharing a few notes from the R&D lab: 1) The EVM12L is NOT a guitar speaker. It was originally designed as a mid-woofer for PA/Sound Reinforcement applications. Proof of this is the surrounds that are made in treated cloth, while all guitar speakers have paper surrounds (or better, in a traditional guitar speaker the cone membrane extends to the edge of the speaker, and is bent/formed to become the suspension). Fortunately, some guys on the US west coast decided to give it a try, and did not care about the recommended application: the community should be grateful to people like Alex Dumble, Randall Smith and Paul Rivera for having paired Fender-style amps with the EVM12L. 2) The frequency response is, after all, not THAT different from a traditional guitar speaker. The difference is HOW the EVM12L responds to power. It is designed to be as clear and uncolored as possible. So, the membrane, voice coil, and spider, are designed to react "piston-like" with the minimum dynamic compression and distortion possible. The complete opposite of what a traditional guitar speaker is designed to do, enriching and coloring the tone with harmonics and overtones even with a mere handful of watts. 3) every detail in the EVM12L is made to minimize distortion and coloration. Even the basket frame is die-cast aluminum, to avoid vibrations and resonances. 4) Super large voice coil (2,5"), about twice the size of a normal guitar speaker voice coil (from 1 1/2" to 2" max). Most Celestion speakers have 1 3/4" VCs. 5) HUGE ceramic magnet. 2 or 3 times bigger and heavier than the standard. The combination of the large voice coil and huge magnet make up for exceptional dynamics and nearly unlimited headroom. So, do we like'em? Yes, we love'em, with certain amps, not all of them, and they need to be used in a certain way to get the most out of them. We love them with F-style, 6L6 and 6V6 amps, from clean to medium gain tones. Since the speaker is SO clean, it loves a certain amount of amp compression and "hairy" overtones; if you pair it with a super squeaky clean amp, it might sound a bit too dry and sterile. Yes, it can be brutal and unforgiving if wrongly paired. Great in ported and open back cabs for everything except super high gain, where you may prefer large, closed back enclosures. It does not like too small cabs, that beast needs some air. We like them also with Brit-style, fat and powerful EL-34 amps, while I personally think it pairs less good with EL84 amps. Hope this may be of interest to the community... yes, I'm a bit of a speaker nerd, I do admit...

Hi Kristian 🤘 Today I painted the 12 inch/16 ohm loudspeaker of my Peavey Valve King because it had very harsh high frequencies and the response was too fast for Rock and Blues. It absolutely worked out fine! I am VERY satisfied 😁 !!! It now sounds like a Marshall Plexi and the issues mentioned above are gone. Great video!

Kristian, wow ! Thank you so much, and Ignazio, thank you too!! This was a fucking amazing and awesome video. So so educational and interesting. I have been so curious about these "questions" and about Jenson speakes too for so long now. They do seem to me to be an absolute excellent alternative to many of the "norms" that we have all been using. Can't wait for more videos! 🤘🤘🤘🤘

Dang, I went from watching Henning & Frayette on amps, to now watching you and Mr Vagnone ... this is how I learn. Thank you both for taking this time and instruct, history, science, etc ... Future question: hemp membranes vs traditional ... which asks the question, what is the future of membranes ?
@rkrasinski

these videos learn us more instead of chugga chugga all over the place ;-)
@JensenSpeakersVideos
@JensenSpeakersVideos 2 года назад
Well, there is nothing different from a membrane made of generic cellulose pulp, and a hemp-based cellulose pulp. Hemp is vegetal, exactly as generic cellulose. The difference is made by every single formulation, every ingredient that the pulp is made of. I played a lot of hemp membranes, and haven't found a common tonal imprint, if not a loosely warmer, soft tone (that might well be achieved with other pulps as well...) In my personal opinion, I think that is the hemp "fascination" and the green color that may be appealing to some. Technically, hmm, I'm not so sure about it. The future of membranes for guitar, as of today... is still paper. Never found any alternative material that works as well as paper for this application.

Thank you both for a no nonsense talk about speakers. Ignacio, your explanations are clear and articulate. The audio industry in general, and the guitar amp business specifically, suffers from ambiguous description of tone. Beware when the description an amp’s tone sounds like a wine tasting.

Love this guy!!! What chutzpah to persuade his bosses to let him re-enter the pro-music market. And yes his knowledge base is so impressive and delivered with substance and clarity and humility. Great idea to present this deep dive into the technology behind the tone we all quest for.

Thank you! But I don't want to take merits I don't really deserve. The idea came from talkings between me, the CEO of the company, and the owner of SICA Altoparlanti. I was only a Product Manager at the time. He had the balls to pursue the concept and talk to the ownership and arrange the deal. I did a lot in the research, sound testing, playing, selecting the speakers to reverse engineer, as an interface between the guitar player perspective and the engineers in the factory... I learned ALOT on those days, and I am still learning, every day! :)

That Neo's are sounding like Alnico magnets this might be a good compromise for the over prices Celestion blues... I know not very metal but mixed with another speaker it can be! Great video, enjoyed this and watched twice as well.
