In this video, we’ll be having a look at the all new Cosmic desktop environment, created by the fan favourite Linux distro Pop!_OS.
Cosmic desktop is a new Linux desktop created for high performance delivery, while being modern and feature rich at the same time. Cosmic desktop is an absolutely new desktop created from scratch, and it’s not based on any other desktop. It’s completely new. And it’s written in RUST, which is an advanced programming language specifically known for its high performance.
While cosmic desktop has a familiar desktop layout, it nonetheless brings many new things and many redesigns to the world of desktop linux. Thanks to RUST, it has a noticeably faster performance compared to other modern desktops we have today.
It also has advanced features like tiling and a nice set of customisation options baked into it. You’ll actually love the tiling feature here if you’re into it.
There’s a lot to get excited for here, so let’s dive right into the all new cosmic desktop.

I think they should name it Cosmic OS as well from Pop Os, I'm all in for Pop OS, it's just the name does not sound really serious and rather like a hobby project. While Cosmic OS sounds more substantial.

I used Pop! OS 21.04, 21.10 and 22.04 and i can't say it ran that smooth as what i am now seeing in the video. Way better, good choice to ditch gnome!

broooo, cosmic looks so good, is like gnome but sane, for someone who doesnt really like kde(i mostly use Xfce), this desktop looks amazing, it will probably be what im gonna use in the future

It definitely feels big and empty on Gnome. I' e started using Linux since only last year, and with everything that's happening with Windows now, and the Linux community takong a giant leap towards beginner usability, I am finally tempted to distro hop. Everything looks so good on the Linux side of the world right now.

7:43 love the full window color changing feature. i feel this is very useful when the regular dark and light themes hurt the eyes due to either too much contrast or too little contrast. sometimes certain monitors don't like the light and dark themes. i mean looking at this video where he places a few dark windows on top of eachother, one cannot distuingish between them easily. they look like a single black block of many rectangles shoved into eachother, if you know what i mean. but any way, the features here are awesome and i will surely give this a try. i wonder if cosmic desktop will appear in other distros as well. maybe something like Cubuntu, Cbuntu, Cosbuntu...

im on the cosmic gnome version and ive looked at the epoch version. i use it 100% no mouse in tiling mode which is what i wanted and it performs very nicely, this is the experience i was looking for in other tiling window managers i never got

Cosmic will be available on most Distros. There's already pre-alpha builds for testing on the AUR, Fedora COPR, and NixOS repos.

While it's fast, the UI is far behind any DE out there. I understand it's still in pre-alpha, but the devs said they are sticking with this UI aesthetics. What I hate so much about the UI is the Font Style. Why don't they just switch to INTER is beyond my understanding.

Agree, but at least removing fira code package made my custom font work on NixOS. I realized I have to treat this like XFCE which I never liked. Hopefully they add smooth animations and better aesthetics

Have you tried any gaming yet? The DE seems to have an effect on that to some degree and from what i heard KDE performs better in that regard than gnome, i would love to see how well this pre alpha does.

There aren’t really any benchmarks out there I could find to support this. I’ve done some gaming on both KDE and Gnome and can’t tell a difference.

@@CastleRacconI had the exact opposite experience. Windows always felt clunky, slow and heavy to me. While Linux feels faster and snappy to me. A whole depends on which distro you use.

@Saurabhkumar-bn3dl It sucks for me since windows 10 is nothing but bloat and spyware. I tired mint, manjaro, pop os and arch linux, with arch being the fastest to everything but also with the most headache. (I optimize windows 10, so that could be the reason why it's really fast for me)

Right now Cosmic desktop is in pre-alpha, so benchmarking it and passing out those results to my viewers would be very wrong. But I will do it once the stable release comes out.

I would suggest to you Ubuntu on a bootable USB Stick, its one of the most user-friendly Linux distros out there with a huge community and lots of help online. After you tested it with the live usb Stick, which lets you click around a bit you can either do a dual boot setup (this way you wont lose your win 10) or directly replace win10 completely of course.

linux mint. if you get some knowledge and want to move to a different distro id suggest opensuse tumbleweed or debian. but if you want the latest software and love the "do it yourself" aspect after learning mint then go for arch or a arch-based distro

Since i couldn't find my answer anywhere then I'll ask it here. Does anybody knows if there is a option to tweak display color on linux? Apparently i have a 6 bit panel which is too bad so i use AMD Radeon software to tweak the color and made it mucu better. Since Windows is slow asf i want to switch to linux but that having no display color option made me switch back to windows:(. if anybody knows then please help me out

Wow, the hyperbole here 😀 "Revolutionary new desktop" ... nope, nothing revolutionary here, and it's obvious that the System76 people have no intention of doing anything "revolutionary." This is a mix of pretty well trodden ideas, and as I say, I think this is the intention as they are wanting to develop for a mass market. It was interesting that Canonical couldn't/wouldn't keep on with their replacement for Gnome shell and went back to tweaking the Gnome shell and desktop for their own purposes. How long this desktop environment will last for System76 is a moot point. It hasn't even been launched and used yet. So far all I'm seeing is a remix of ideas, especially from Gnome, but done slightly differently and in some cases it seems not as well. Of course they can create a new desktop environment, use Rust (I thought all the "cool kids" had moved on from that?) and all that. It's in the nature of free software for people to do this, but this whole thing also seems to have at least a smidgen of "not invented here" syndrome.

@@abebewalcott2572 Yes, since we have gained control of the base packaging in 22.04, an upgrade to 24.04 will be much less prone to package conflicts on upgrades. I've done a handful of successful upgrades from 22.04 to 24.04 so far.

absolutely useless crap. this is insane. a lot of gnome devs hard worked to make a refined, easy, distraction free desktop with nothing on it and bottom of it. no icons. no dash. no dock. just press superkey and write first letters of your program. bam. you are there. just press superkey. bam. here is your open apps. easier than eating a cake. and some random guys are trying to poison this elegant and minimal environment with ducking win and mac desktop mentality. you know what. i hate all of those crapwares. gnome extensions. - apps menu. why. just press super+A keys. - dash to dock. just press super+A keys. - dash to panel. just press super+A keys. - places menu. super+a+"fi". here are files. - window list. why you need it. just superkey. - Desktop Icons NG (DING). why is that. we are trying to save ourselves from distraction. just supper+a to see apps. so basically all of "gnome extensions(!)" are trying to make gnome to gnome less. to revert it. to spoil devs hard work. and for me pop os is a den for those craps.

I don't want to press a key, i want to click. Fine if you like it the gnome way, I don't, so give me a normal desktop without 10 extensions for normal things. You can have your minimal desktop there is no reason not to also include a classic setup. I love gnome i really do but don't like the defaults.

Try using Bleachbit on Pop! OS, and you'll know why many quit using Gnome+Cosmic. Linux Mint's Cinnamon's a better DE compared to Cosmic.

Sad for these guys, they spent all this time making their own DE in rust but decided to baseit on the worst one Linux currently has. So far every Linux distro I have tried have superbly broken UI that affects apps you are running (and Unity engine suffers the worst). Clicks are going through windows hitting the underneath windows. Like basic stuff is way out of hands but cosmetics is there already. Ideas are great, execution is very poor. And PopOs gets frozen if you click stuff too hard (like I have used to with Windows). Overall with the time amount put in this things development - it is a sign of obvious sabotage to have it so poor today.
