Clothing designer Nudie Cohn lit a fire in the country music world with glittering suits and jackets with rhinestone-bejeweled pot leaves and gargantuan uppers and downers. His custom creations for Elvis, Gram Parsons, and Hank Williams are now legendary. In this episode of Behind the Seams, VICE's Adri Murguia visits the home of Jamie Nudie, the granddaughter of Nudie Cohn, who's keeping the family business alive.

I met Nudie in 1974 when I had two shirts specially designed by him. I still got them and I still wear them on stage. They are like antiques! They've been "let out" once or twice! HaHa! One of them has Roy Rogers trim! I'll have to put them up on RU-vid one of these days. I loved Nudie's work! We all did. He was the best. He was the last word in costuming! He was and is a class act! I met Nudie many times. We'd get out of school and see his cadillac parked in front of a bar near our junior high school in Fresno, CA. It was the white one with the horns and calfskin seat and the coins embedded in the landau cover. It was the first car I ever saw with an alarm. As soon as we touched the car, Nudie would come out of the bar with a drink in his hand. He was really a nice guy and told us all about making Elvis's clothes. When I finally got my driver's license, we would drag race.

Great Video my Dad was a huge Country and Western music fan and i remember seeing so many great performers in the 70s wearing the clothing i remember the cars being something my Dad thought were fascinating

Nudie Cohn's clothes were works of art, and he seemed to be a really nice guy. Gram Parsons used to take his guitar to the shop and play for them.

David Allen Coe’s crew stole our microphones after a show. He wasn’t a nice guy. Actually. He was an ashore and not near the talent of Glen. Although, in his long hair days, he looked great pounding on the drum.

I was just reciting some lines of one of DAC's songs. They just came to my mind watching this video. Well, I know that DAC is not the definition of a saint. And stories of stolen mics don't surprise me. But I disagree with the statement that DAC was not near Glen's talent. Glen is undoubtedly one of the best guitarists in the world and I love to listen to him playing. But when it comes to conveying melacholy, situative feeling and pulling the listener into a song and also writing tremendous pieces, DAC is way up on the list. He also has stupid and bad songs. But listen to one of his earliest records "The mysterious rhinestone cowboy" and all four parts of "For lovers only" and you will know what I mean. I quit listening to country music, though. I came to understand that all time and talent ought to be used to give glory unto our gracious God and Redeemer. I dearly recommend you to seek Him earnestly. May He bless you too

I think the fact Vice focuses on such obscure topics like 70's rhinestone cowboy fashion is what makes these documentaries so good. I think it's what we've all come to expect from Vice. Vice has a knack to dissect even topics that aren't particularly an interest of mine and make it worth discussing. I think it's funny a Russian immigrant would appreciate stereo-typical cowboy culture enough to bedazzle it. It's fascinating to look closely at what most might not appreciate initially. >w>

Nudie made the gorgeous suit you see Lolly Vegas wearing in the Midnight Special video of Come and Get Your Love, as well as the more subtly elegant grey suit Lolly wears in the Come and Get Your Love VH1 video, also here on RU-vid, and the great red suit Lolly wears in the One More Time video you can see here. Search Redbone and you'll see them. There's something really special about the way Lolly wears these suits.
