What a lad.

My tortoise’s name is Shelly!! I have a Russian tortoise! I don’t know if it was mentioned, but tortoises can climb too! And I mean like actually climbing a fence. They sure don’t look like it, but they really are quite adept at getting around! They move faster than you think. They like to bulldoze through things and push things around like furniture. They like to chase things. Especially Sulcata tortoises. Sulcata’s can be territorial so they ram into things. And their shells have that up curve so they can ram and lift things up and flip them over. They can walk distances. They dig big burrows that are big enough to share with other species in the wild. They are very adept at getting around even if they don’t look like it. Pet owners actually get their tortoises microchipped because they are escape artists. They escape, bury themselves down the street somewhere in someone else’s yard and they can be surprisingly hard to find for their size. I don’t know how many times I’ve come home to find my Russian tortoise has nosedived off the step into the balcony, or tried to climb up the wall and flipped himself over, or pushed a floor lamp and catapulted himself on purpose... and he’s managed to do these things without my roommate hearing anything. Our favorite game in our house is “where is the tortoise now and what is he doing?” The cats and the dog get involved too because they have claimed Shelly as their baby.

Shellz is hands down one of my fav keepers.

I have a feeling when Shelly took his food and ran off with it, he started to move for her, like "Seriously? You gonna take my food like that?" Then he noticed the hay and changed direction cause he didn't wanna run. XD

Tortoises can swim but it takes more energy, and they tire quickly. Not all turtles are aquatic. Box turtles live on land Their Top speed is greater than they normally show you, but they don't want to under most conditions. They can turn their feet into pedals and it looks like they're swimming across the lawn. Sulcatas do not hibernate, they may bunker down for dry conditions, but it is not a hibernation They're not doing well in the wild, they're currently endangered due to food hunting, human encroachment/habitat loss, and the pet trade. There are more Sulcatas in the USA than in Africa

Almost bought one of these cuties in the early 2000's but upon easy common sense caretaking questions I realized they're real cute little but their diet is so important and not maintained conscientiously it would damage the shape of the shell which would be an indication that expensive vet fees would follow! And they're so darn cute how could one be so cruel as to have one as a pet! Tortoises and turtles respond to food not affection!

Beautiful animal. Apropos name.. looks like a bull dozer... I have a Spur too... He's only about 9-10 inches from bow to stern.. No idea how old he is... Found him wandering my neighborhood..

One of these showed up in my yard yesterday It was very cool but we didn't know that it was not native to Oklahoma so we called the gang warden so that he could document it But My next door neighbor recognized Is it and we called the owner to see if it was theirs And it was A family had just moved to Oklahoma and they are going to start a new petting zoo I'm so excited to see the tortoise was so amazing it moved a lot faster than you would think for sure took video and pitcher's wish I could share them with you all it was the most amazing thing had the whole neighborhood excited Everyone took pictures with it

Would you consider adopting a 5 year old male sulcata?

Having a Sulcata is basically like adopting a child that will out live you. I got my female as an adult because the previous owners were going to abandon her in a park People get them little and have no ides how big they can get........So if you want a tortoise most people should stick to a Russian, Herman, Redfoot etc. that stay smaller. The same goes for getting baby iguanas and monitors that get five or six feet long.
