Meet Italy's Lifeguard Dogs

In the midst of Italy’s hot summers-when the beaches are full of swimmers-the lifeguards keeping everyone safe bring in some much-needed, four-legged assistance. We’re talking about water rescue dogs. Dogs make ideal lifeguard partners as they remain calm under pressure and instinctively choose the safest path through the water currents back to shore. They can even stay afloat while paddling multiple swimmers to safety. Through his Italian School for Lifeguard Dogs, Ferruccio Pilenga has trained more than 350 volunteer pups to execute water rescues. Now THAT’s a good dog!

Amen to that. I have a special hatred of dog owners who select cetain dog breeds and train them to be attack dogs. The dog just wants to please it's owner but some owners abuse that trust.

As an Italian I've always thought that this was done everywhere in the world ( at least in the wester world ) , Labradors or other breeds find in water their element , so it's obvious that , among dogs for blind people of police dogs etc there were also life guards for the sea dogs . So weird that in other country they didn't think that . We really are the cleverest.

What? Other countries use water rescue dogs, most of these breeds were created out of Italy. That’s not what the video said at all, it said that Italy recognizes them as equal lifeguards under the law. Lol get a grip and get over yourself.

+Cat MeNot (CatMeNot) I agree , they are defiantly enjoying what they are doing, especially as they are breeds that are designed for water . They have surely a happier life than the average obese Labrador who does nothing all day or who see the sea or a lake once per year .

Not really. They are really well trained. The dogs barely accept affection from people just their team. Sometimes, the life guards allow children to , just a little, to explain what the dogs do. If you ever go to Sperlonga you can see them in action.

They both spread diseases if not taken care of. But cats are not your servants like dogs are, dogs come in packs so thy will have a gerarchic mentality. A cat is your equal in his mind. And they are not as clingy. And a cat will never be big enough to kill you if raised badly.

That's a genius idea, I've never thought of that. They're naturals in the water and also naturally protective over people. Also I remember when I was little my family and I used to swim in our pond and every time one of us would go deep my dog would drag us back in.

It makes so much sense. These dogs were created through selective breeding to retrieve in the water. They are working dogs and they are the happiest when they're doing what they were bred for. This is such a great idea for every country to have this program. I wouldn't mind having one as a pet that works. Well Bowser, get your gear on it's time to go to work. I'll see you this evening.

Dogs can be trained attack animals or they can be rescue animals or an animal that can spot something not right and inform it's master about an impending medical conditions or hidden health hazard.
