Meet Joe Dlugo. He's a backyard solitary beekeeper, citizen scientist, and wildlife gardener! Dave Hunter, Founder and Owner of Crown Bees, traveled to Joe's property in Tenino, Washington, for an interview and tour of his pollinator haven. Through curiosity, observation, and "considering the perspective of the bee," he's created habitat for tens of thousands of native bees (and countless other species) and is a fantastic example that anyone can help our pollinators thrive.
If you're as inspired by Joe's story as we are and want to set up your own small bee sanctuary, we now offer the Small Bee Discovery that includes a 78-Hole 6mm Farm Grade Wood Tray and 80 4mm BeeTubes to get you started! Shop Small Bee Discovery @ crownbees.com/small-bee-disco...

Dave, Thank you for providing a glimpse into the life of another bee enthusiast! We here in Washington are so blessed to have varied climates that support the bees which in turn support us.

I think I have lots of the Green Flash bees in the fall on my Fireworks Goldenrod, which are a smallish goldenrod. I love photographing that gorgeous metallic color. I will have to get some 4mm tubes for my bee houses to see if I too can cultivate them. Thanks. I can't even count how many species of small bees I have. Many are very small bumble bee looking insects but in many sizes.

Good for you Carol! Well done with observations and providing great housing for the bees.

Although some worry that putting too much native bee habitat this close together makes them a target for parasites, it looks like in this case it is working just fine! This inspires me to create more habitat in my small backyard.

Very informative. Thank you for sharing. I guess I need to pay closer attention to see if I have different types of bees in my bee house!

Is this the book that you said was one of your favorites: The Bees in Your Backyard: A Guide to North America's Bees Paperback - November 24, 2015

So what size laminate tubes do you use inside the holes & where do you buy them ? Thx 👍⚾️

Hi Bobmariano3731, smaller bees prefer a 4mm ID paper tube. The 6mm wood tray seems to hold them just fine with great spacing. You can find this here: crownbees.com/collections/nesting-materials/products/small-bee-discovery - Dave

FYI: The sound volume fluctuates wildly. Not good.

Sorry! A small company doesn't have the luxury of a video team with awesome equipment. It was just me on a cell phone trying to capture a unique moment. If you understand the premise with what he was saying, that's a win for us. Thanks for watching Ty. Dave

What direction is your bee house facing? I find more use south facing over east facing openings.
@CrownBees
@CrownBees 5 месяцев назад
I'd say anything within that range, morning sun wall is East-SE seems to be the best.

What does it mean to seal in laminate? At the end?
@CrownBees
@CrownBees 5 месяцев назад
If the end of a nesting hole is wide open, bees tend to not nest in there. If the "laminate" or wood tray, doesn't have a back of some sort to it, then the bees will nest elsewhere.

8:35 what size tubes are those? 6mm?
@CrownBees
@CrownBees 5 месяцев назад
Hi James, the smaller diameter holes are 4mm. The wood trays as the holder are 6mm leafcutter trays.
