I absolutely adored mine, "Kali" She was a stroller/house chicken. City people thought she was a rooster due to her size (14 lb) but she laid the biggest eggs I've ever seen. She did a lot of travelling and was VERY social. The only chicken many of the kids who petted her have ever seen. Once even laid an egg on cue.....several men were arguing that she was a rooster, and she went into the posture....out pops a huge egg. They were stunned into silence. End of argument. A nice older middle eastern man leaned in to me to whisper "It is a woman." I nodded. Somene actually had experience. LOL

That is awesome! Kali sounds like she was an amazing girl! I have a golden comet who is frequently mistaken for a rooster. Not because of her size but because of her comb. Well, and her bad attitude... 😊😊😊

@@thecoopscoop Yes, Red Comet "EggNog" had a personality twice her size. She was definitely the "roo" of the bunch. We had five dogs and none of them would mess with her! Only six years.💔 She was a delight.

How do they tolerate hot summers? It's in the high 90's and low 100's today in Arkansas
@thecoopscoop
@thecoopscoop 3 месяца назад
It's been really hot and humid here, too, so I try to keep watch to see if any of them are overheating. I keep a big container with a solid block of ice for them to lay down beside in the shade. It takes hours to melt, and as it does, they have cold water to drink. I also turn on an AC unit in the coop a few hours in the evening, so it knocks the temp down a little so they can be more comfortable on the roost at night. It's been pretty miserable... 🥵

Opal looks and breed sounds like my blue cuckoo marans. "Cuckoo" not into snuggling as such. I have my Lavender Orpington as my momma's girl. Blanche was the most skittish since her 2nd day. She now likes to "bow up" on her sister, Mimi the Tuxedo Cat!!

Just take it slow. I start letting mine spend a little supervised time outside together at around 10 weeks, for 10-15 minutes a day. I try to always make sure they have plenty of space to get away from each other. Every day, I add a little time to their visits, and they're usually ready to be totally together by the time they're about 16 weeks old. I always try to keep chicks where the older ones can see them too but separate, of course, so they're safe. That way, they get used to them being around. Are you getting more chicks?

I have a sussex, a wyandott, 2 rhode island reds, a bantam , millie fluer d'uccle. Just bought 4 silkies, an easter egger, 2 orphingtons , a maran and a jersey giant. Im wondering if i should buy another j giant or if one will be happy in my flock . All pullets except the silkies. Thinking 3 silkies are roos. Too soon to tell but 3 are taller. Opal seems happy. Wanting your opinion. Ive looked it up but you are the only one who just has one. Have had them a week and the jersey is already trying to get out of the tub. Took her out and she was happy to be held. Shes is close in size to the orphingtons but twice the size of the maran and e egger . The silkies are 3 weeks and close to her size. I got them to be family to my little bantam. She was bought with 2 mallard ducks that had 21 babies last year. They flew south in the fall and poor millie was left behind. I find her alone too often and hope she will mother the silkies. Thank you

Hopeing a few ducks find their way home.. i miss them . I would come in from working outside all day and find Peep and Pretty stting on the rug beside my bed. If you havent raised ducks, they are funny birds. They make eye contact and show emotion. When the babies got older they would come hang out with me and their dad would get jealous and chase them away.

@june5095 I've had ducks in the past, and they were a lot of fun. I'm not planning to get more, though, unless we move somewhere that has a pond so they can get out in the water. I hope some of yours make it back. That would be pretty awesome. 😍
