On September 15, 2022, the Costa Mesa Republican Assembly hosted its third meeting to give members an opportunity to meet and question local candidates running in the 2022 midterm elections. Eleven candidates presented and included political races for U.S. Congress, Costa Mesa City Council, Mesa Water District, OC Water District, Costa Mesa Sanitary District and Newport-Mesa School Board. Each presented their case why they are your best choice.

The incumbent sanitary district director who penned the prior comment - a totally erroneous piece of garbage - should be ashamed. Some corrections in order: the referenced FPPC fine (for bolded info in a flyer) has zero effect on any plans to proceed with a consolidation. The commenter also conveniently omitted the fact that two CMSD sewage spills dumped 87,000 gallons of sewage into Upper Newport Bay, resulting in State prosecutors imposing a $364,000 fine against the Costa Mesa Sanitary District. The only real impediment of pursuing a consolidation of Mesa Water and CM Sanitary is the Costa Mesa Sanitary Board! The study shows real savings from consolidation - $15.6 million in one-time savings and $2.7 million annually. The only “flaw” is lack of comprehension by CM Sanitary. The voters want consolidation to be studied yet Sanitary refuses. Another huge fallacy in the previous comment is saying investing $70 million dollars in infrastructure caused water rate increases. It did not. Debt payments remain flat. Perhaps CM Sanitary should have invested in infrastructure before their sewage spills and woefully sub par maintenance of their assets. The main driver of rate increase is the cost of labor, energy, and inflation in general. Finally, no tax was imposed by Mesa Water. They are simply splitting capital (infrastructure improvement) costs from water costs and collecting it on the property tax bill…as do 8/9 retail water agencies in OC. The commenter also conveniently omitted that CM Sanitary imposes 2 assessments on property tax bills!
