These children were all born in 2000 as was my grandson. He died aged 9 in 2010 but out of his cohort of 6 at the hospice pre school 2 girls are still alive, thank God. I love being part of their lives and seeing what Joe would be up to now. It was a real privilege to have Joe in my life and to care for him and made me a far better person, especially in my work.

A friend of mine has a dauther with a very similar condition, she is now in her late teens and with a brilliant mother who has been her caregiver and advocate, she continues to live and increases in knowledge and strength. This family has a total of five daughters the four others have always helped with her care and loved her more than themselves! Over the years I have been able to watch her grow, especially as they bring her to Church in her travel bed when possible, so she can be in the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, hear the singing, be greeting by church family members, and celebrate with us! I believe when she is there, the entire church is brighter and more serene!!!

All these children and parents have developed amazing spirits. As a developmental vision specialist I have seen children with tuberose sclerosis and many people of all ages with brain injury and can see that William struggles with specific frontal lobe issues and isn't an "ill behaved" or "ill disciplined" child. I feel for him and his family how exhausting it must be. I was glad to see the update on him being helped with medication.

You all don't know what it's like to raise children with special needs. It's so difficult on your stress level. It's understandable that she would lose it. There so much care that each child needs. Every couple who have a special needs child I say you have my thumb up. I have special needs and so do some of my family it's hard on every relationship. Please don't judge another just because you have children doesn't mean you know what it's like to raise a special needs child

I have a hard time understanding the mindset of knowing you have a 50-50 chance of passing a horrific genetic disorder on to your child, but you keep having children anyway and refuse to genetic test. And YES, I know what it is like to raise special needs kids. Infantile autism with my step son and his mother was unwilling to parent him, so it was left to me. I had my own son who we quickly realised something was up with and he ended up with a diagnosis, but early intervention pretty much saved his life. He'll be able to work, live on his own and probably go to university, but his half brother will never be able to live on his own. My marriage fell apart, mostly because he didn't want to be a father to difficult children and he couldn't behave responsibly. We should be able to wipe out certain genetic disorders that we can identify beforehand, like Cystic Fibrosis. I hope her children are more responsible. There comes a point where the suffering of the child far outweighs the ego of the parent. When you know how horrifically bad the quality of life is going to be, and yet you continue, it looks like Munchausen by proxy. I'm not referring exactly to this case (Shelby). Cousins of Pakistani decent, for example, that carry known genetic disorders, still marrying and have children that are deaf, blind and with little or no brain function. The problem isn't that they are first cousins, but it is because they both carry certain genetic disorders that when both parents are carriers, they will manifest in the offspring.
@turahope8791

I have done genetic testing will never do it agian the people who did the test treated me like shi..... and it made me feel like a animal I am a human person with feelings like every body else. I don't have children I want kids but I wish to adopt

The thing is if you’re doing something important (such as saving your child’s life) and you’ve asked and asked the children to stay out of the room and bear with you but they keep coming over and touching equipment etc you just have to be sharp and short with them. I think unless you’ve kept your child alive by medical equipment and intervention daily you will never understand (and that’s fine)

It’s extremely selfish and irresponsible on Shelby’s parents’ part to continue having children knowing they might either suffer this horrible illness or being healthy and barely get their mom’s attention and time as it all goes to the sick child! She is gambling on children’s life like it was a game!! Very wrong and shame on her!!

I feel like they painted a bad picture of Vicky and Nick here. Showing them not supervising the kids on the trampoline and showing how she gets snippy with the kids... Also could someone tell me where that needle went that they cocked Shelbies leg up like that? I felt Awful for Marie, dealing with that no good. He left her to go backwards, cheated with her and that shows you that the first baby mama is gross.

If Nathan is using Makaton, then he's not being taught a signed language. Makaton isn't a language in any way. It uses gestural signs in English word order, which doesn't meet the criteria of a language.

You know, I understand Vicky’s viewpoint, but at the same time, It’s not just her life, It’s tge baby’s life too. Shelby didn’t get a choice of wether or not she wanted to be born with the risk of her condition. Shelby now has to suffer the complications of the condition because her mother chose to have her away despite knowing the risks. I don’t agree with abortion in almost all situations (I feel it should be reserved for victims of rape and forced incest and a few other special circumstances) I don’t know if IVF and such was available at the time this show was made, But today, if you have the choice and the money people like Vicky who are carriers for conditions that can be tested for are able choose to do a form of IVF where they can actually collect her eggs to find and select and a healthy one. They can guarantee a child a that Doesn’t have the illness and that also isn’t a carrier. That way you avoid making the child suffer being born with a genetic illness, and you still get to have children. As a bonus, Your child wouldn’t be a carrier through this method so they would not have to go through the same process in order to have children, because they don’t have the gene and can’t pass it on to their kids. It’s a Win-Win-Win. I will note that they do actually fertilize the eggs (with your partners sperm so don’t worry) and grow them very slight in test tubes, HOWEVER, they only grow them enough to allow the egg to grow a couple of cells and that’s it, It’s not an embryo at this point because the baby hasn’t started to form. There is no heartbeat, and there is no life. There is only a couple cells in a tube. No baby (or life for that matter) would form in the tubes anyways because they need to be returned to the mothers uterus and then successfully attach what will become the umbilical cord before the egg can progress into an embryo. Tons of eggs are actually fertilized all the time. We just don’t know about it, because only the ones that successfully attach become a pregnancy. As for why they grow the fertile eggs: They do this because they need to actually take a sample of the dna inside one of the cells to test for the faulty Gene(s) responsible for the condition they’re looking to avoid. They can’t do this to the main egg probably because it would damage it, also they’re insanely tiney. A few of the eggs that are found to be healthy will be transplanted back into the lady in the hopes that at least one is successful. The rest of the healthy eggs will be specially frozen and saved just in case the first batch of healthy eggs fails to attach or if successful in case you end up wanting another baby on the future they’ll have those ready to use.

Second note: This kind of IVF only works for conditions that can be identified during pregnancy or with DNA. If you are like me, and your conditions do not have a known gene(s) associated with them, then this can’t help you unfortunately. I have made the decision to not have children, But Our choices are our own and you are free to choose based on your own opinion but do please try to consider the kind of condition(s) you have (or are a carrier for), research and think about what life could be like for a child born with that condition. It’s fine if you still want children, but some people are better off adopting. Again the choice is yours but I hope my words will at least make you consider things from a child’s point of view.

@@pearlkelly6337 I know, Bless her heart. I looked it up just yesterday when I was looking to see if I could watch the show on netflix or some other streaming service and saw the article that said she’d passed away at age 19 so the whole time i was watching this clip with this doctor I was just thinking, Who the hell is he to look at a child who is giggling and full of life and then tell her parents in the other room that they should let her die. Imagine if she had given in to the doctors pressuring, i mean for gods sake she was only 4 and we now know that she had 15 more years ahead of her. That’s terrible to think about. Vicky is so strong, cuz if i where her I would’ve probably punched that doctor in the nuts!
