The new Mercury 600HP V12 outboard engine has made a huge splash in the sportfishing market. And rightfully so. The largest outboard engine in its class, the American Made V12 engine was built to meet the rising demand for high horsepower outboard engines capable of powering the XL center console market that continues to be a growing segment in the marine industry. In reading comments from all of the Armchair Engineers here, it does seem they all forget the real point of this motor: This is Merc's Halo engine, designed to blow all competition out of the water. Remember, much of this new tech will begin to appear in many of their other motors..... Expensive? Yes. But the Cutting Edge in outboards....

Great video. We were at the reveal of the 600hp V-12 on Lake X in Florida. We got to test the motors on five different boats ranging from dual to quad configurations and the performance was outstanding on all of them . Hopefully we will get to see some of these new innovations on other motors in their line in the near future.

If you can replace 4x Verado 300's with a pair of these and get better fuel economy, better handling, better top end speed etc they're not that expensive. They're made for center consoles which currently have 3x motors or more, and the people who buy these types of boat can afford them.

@@douglasburnside MSRP when released was $120K each. Now you can find them for $48k each. I don't know of too many shops that can perform the rigging on a pair of 1200 lb outboards. Then again, I'm in the Mid Atlantic, not a prime sales location for these engines.

Mercury will be releasing a v10 outboard soon in the 350 to 400 hp class. Models will include a 350, 350 SeaPro, 400 and 400R. This will probably replace the remaining 350 and 400 hp i6 outboards and the 400R i6.

That pricing is right in line with the Yamaha 425 XTO in terms of $$ per HP. And considerably cheaper than the 7Marine 625.

I have a concern about the turning. In an older motor the pivot is above the water line. This one looks like the pivot is under water. Won't that contribute to corosion were the pivot point is?

Seems like a valid consideration but I know there are literally thousands and thousands of hours of saltwater testing on any of these products before they ever reach the consumer so I’m certain that has been considered and addressed

If you run four of these at WOT, what is the gas consumption? If you have a 50 ft. boat. Why not run a couple of inboard diesels instead?

Keep in mind inboard diesels are far more expensive in terms of initial cost, they are much more expensive to service, and these outboards are designed to go on boats that are intended to be able to travel in shallower water than inboards will permit also.

@@fishbluewater Cat c18 marine diesel is $55,000usd makes 800hp and 2780# torque, and is rated at 10,000 hrs of use. The Mercury doesn't list a torque rating. And is about $30,000 more.

This is a scam. They do not even have a proof-of-concept prototype. They said they have a Mahle feasibility report of their design but not a word is available for reading of that report. It will never happen. If you want to wait, may be Suzuki or Yamaha are developing something similar

@@fishbluewater Think I need to update my remark about the questionable longevity of these motors. They probably will run for many hours. I was a boat mechanic many years ago and back then the high powered outboards weren't good for very long. Outboards with half the power of these new Mercs were 300 hour motors at best.

Well, for years, we relied on the prop hub. And the more boaters tried to do a holeshot from a standstill, it wears the hub out prematurely. Besides, for outboards under say, 200 hp, ya really only need a prop hub. A hell of a lot cheaper than adding a transmission PLUS all that added weight, which robs the outboard of some power. I've owned quite a few boats & outboards up to 150 hp.........and I only ever had to replace a prop hub twice, on older, pre-owned outboards I wound up buying. Adding a transmission to any outboard motor would probably push up the cost by at least 30%. Most couldn't afford it. The industry would suffer.

@@howabouthetruth2157I boat in the Puget sound and having a cruise speed of 12 to 15 at 1200 to 1800 rpm would be nice. I don't need to get there in a hurry but 15 knots at 3000rpm seams like a lot of waisted fuel. Changing the prop pitch really is only noticable at WOT.

Unmarked price on products tend to be between 50-100% of manufacturing price. Higher upmarket on lower manufacturing numbers. This will be closer to the 100% mark. This will cover wages, development cost and so forth.

Where's HP to weight ratios?? This is the best we can do just add more cylinders? At leaste 7 marine made 600+ with 8cylinders even though they are out of business at least they were pioneers in real HP. I say learn how to get twin turbo for strokes to be reliable.

"you can run low grade oil" like 10W30.... yeah, because that's a top concern for the prospective buyer of these. And I've never heard of 10W30 being called "low grade." This sales guy did a terrible job "selling" this engine. Super nervous and terrible at public speaking.

I have huge question marks in my mind about the excess this engine represents. Surely, for the core 12 cylinder block, there might be prospects for automotive applications. It seems like with computer aided designing conquering so many manufacturing issues, they just do this stuff because they can. It is impressive but, to me, end result kind of a waste.

people dont realize these are remanufactured lamborghini engines mated to ZF rebuilt junkyard powerglide transmissions. My brother knows a guy who used to date a girl whos sister knows somebody at Mercury.

2 of 2 videos ive watched a video on this channel. I just watched these back to back.. Each time Jamie starts his interview with "you dont know this but.." Jamie did this to the gal at Yamaha too. Very odd. Best not to do this mate.
