Greg introduces himself to other members of Pam's family. When he states that he is in the Nursing field, the doctors in the room appear to be disappointed.
This clip can be used to teach about gender stereotypes. Nursing jobs have traditionally been held by females, and the nursing profession has been viewed as lower caliber than that of a doctor. Given this view and Greg's gender, the doctors in Pam's family laugh when he tells them that he is a nurse. When Greg seriously indicates that he is a nurse, they are disappointed, as indicated by their silence and their facial expressions.
This clip further illustrates gender stereotypes through the questioning of Greg by Pam's family. Their asking why he didn't pursue an M.D. and become a doctor suggests that they have certain expectations of him and could not initially believe that he preferred to pursue nursing.

I can never make fun of a man for being a nurse. I had a roommate a male friend that studied nursing in college and the amount of female nursing students he could bring back to our house for parties or just hanging out was insane.

Yeah... I graduated with my BSN in 1981. Met plenty of women and retired at age 60 with over a million. But... I do admit... when I started nursing school in 1977, everyone assumed I'd never really "make it." One other thing... By the end, I wish they didn't pay me so much. 'Cuz they'll work the crap out of you for that $50/hour.

The writers never give Greg a break. Following his humiliation, he launches into a seemingly well-rehearsed speech about patient care vs. bureaucracy. He finally gets a chance to make good points and flex his intellectual muscles, but then Dina flat-out interrupts him and changes the subject. Great film.

@@GeorgiaAndrea In this scene, she didn't interrupt him to be rude. She knew the conversation was going in a more negative direction and like she did throughout the film, she tried to be a peacemaker and cut the convo short. She was always trying to make everyone feel comfortable. Also, sometimes people interrupt because they aren't taught to listen...and truly, many people are guilty of this. People also tend to overshadow you if you don't assert yourself or your presence. If they interrupt you (without meaning to), just let it be known "Hold on, let me finish". If they interrupt you to be rude, you let them know its not appreciated.

I never really got what Greg sees in Dina, it's my main issue with the films. Her family is a bunch of stiffs, and to be honest she never comes across as all that different. Besides Greg proclaiming now and then how much he's in love with her, you never get the feeling that they even like each other.

The most underrated aspect of this movie was how Focker lied about everything to impress his future father in law and gain his approval, but nursing was an area he was proud of and never lied about, even if Pam’s family laughed about it at his expense.

Funny how Pam's mother always seemed to be the one to give Greg the fair shake and she downright interrupts him in the middle of a valid argument while the whole family laughs directly at him. Greg probably knew as soon as they introduced themselves as doctors where it was going to go.

I noticed that this is the one scene where Greg speaks with 100% confidence since his career is the one thing in this movie he isn't ashamed of and wears with pride. He didn't stumble over his words and made eye contact with everyone, including Jack.

He was talking about something real for the firts and only time, and wasn’t trying to please anyone with bullshit, and finally when he’s talking about real shit, he gets cut off and his chance to show who he actually was, was cut short. Thats why he showed tha5 face at the end

I guess it's because, typically, nurses are female. You're right, there's absolutely nothing wrong with being a male nurse, it's a respectable profession, but you could say it's in the same vein of how most flight attendants are female.

This movie was so funny! Even with Greg being made fun of for being a nurse. Even I laughed. When I was a young kid, I thought of the gender roles when it came to careers. I always thought the doctors were male and the nurses were female. One of my dad's friends who was a woman, was a doctor. I was like, "but women can't be doctors" cause I believed males couldn't be nurses, and boy did my mom (who was an RN) have to stop me and talk to me lol.

People criticising Pam's mom for cutting off Greg, when that was probably the smartest move as he has a tendency to put his foot in his mouth and the situation was already awkward for first impressions, so unintentionally insulting the groom's profession might have made things super awkward.

i remember being grade school watching this on tv with my mom, who happened to work at a hospital. i asked her 'i dont get it, why dont they believe hes a nurse, its a job right ?' and she did explain it to me. mayb it was the 90s but i never realized theres sex based job positions in the world, still dont, but i kept thinking homie seems nice caring confident intelligent guy.

@John Bowerman there is never anything glamorous about being a nurse. A doctor studies longer and hard. Earn a title, good reputation and save lives. Surgeons operate. Psychiatrists treat patients and can make powerful notes to allow a patient to take a leave of absence from work. Nurses can't. Nurses are very jealous about doctors. Anyone can become a nurse here it's e years on college to get your basic RN and then you get to work in hospitals. Many hate their jobs. Want the praises but will never EVER be at thr high level that is a Doctor. Nurses are very good at complaining about salary and workplaces. Only a very rare few are actually good and passionate about what they do.

That shows what you know. I retired before age 60 after 34 years of being an RN with over a million in the bank and my own Condo paid up. Met plenty of women and included in a full spectrum of exciting social events. Never wanted to be an MD. They have to work too hard. My trick... be a supervisor over other RNs and pick up at least one overtime shift per week. I lived a great life.

Many nurses where I work actually earn more than the MD's (especially the ones from third world countries). If not monitored, they'll live at the hospital and run up the overtime. A couple routinely crack the $200k level.

I mean, you have to set aside your pride and give people a bed bath, clean up shit, urine soaked clothes and bedding, puke, be calm under the pressure of people dying in front of you. Be able to lift and turn people that weigh 3x as much as you. Seriously not a lot of guys are cut out for that work.

In my experience, at least in the ED, PAs and MDs have similar levels of patient care focus, and it's less than RNs and CNAs

The joke is on doctors! Travel Nurses make as much money as the average doctor. A Nurse doesn't have to deal with a lot of hassles of a doctor....Longer hours, on call, longer schooling, more expensive schooling, more risk of lawsuits, more bureaucracy, etc.

One reason I never cared too much for this movie was that I felt certain scenes were just too uncomfortable and tense to be all that funny. The tension and realism was just a little high for a comedy, imo. Some of the scenes like this one I feel like I only laugh because I don’t want feel what Greg is feeling.
