James Gunn has transformed Polka Dot Man from a joke into one of the most unique on screen characters, ever, with a terrifying story arc. I want a Polka Dot Man movie
@@ambervalkerie9134 maybe but it would be more good if they evolved his character I cannot remember any other appearance from him apart from detective 300
James Gunn did a great job of reinventing the Polka Dot Man. And he fits right in, because Gunn really embraces the absurd side of DC comics in this movie. The main villain is not one I would have thought I'd ever see on a movie screen, but here we are and it's great.
So Polka Dot Man is legit OP if uses correctly, and since he did exactly what the cover said, you can say, it's no "little lie", because "He just works".
Ok 3 possible theories A. He gets his dots from Acme [⚫/🌑] _ala. Loony Toons. B. He smuggled Wakandan beads, all the way from the Marvel Universe, (they just behave differently in the DCU) then he tweaked, and flattened them, into killer fashion accessories. C. They are actually multiple, separate, pocket dimensions* with different devices/tools/weopons stored inside each one. _ala. Ultra Violet. *Not numerous, mini gateways to _A_ single polka-dot/"dalmatian" dimension, like Marvel's The Spot. Any other ideas?
The only lame bit part was how the writers treated him. Removed his powers for a baseball bat and now he is back to normal in the comics although I'm not sure how he is being utilised. He finally has a figurine.
As silly as this character seems, he might have been a really interesting foe for Batman. Think of his Polka-Dots as something like Batman's utility belt. This allows for the character to always be prepared for every eventuality regarding his plan (whatever that may be). The secret of how the polka-dots work may be the best way to ret-con the character. It doesn't have to be the person who was the original Mr. Polka-Dot. Some washed up hacker could find the suit or plans for the dots and become the latest cyber criminal of the DCU. A lot of potential with this one...
you must figure those dots have to be expensive to replace which may lead one to wonder why He never sold the tech .. he could make million on the patent alone
Marveryn that just makes me think of that one panel where Superman with the most disappointed look possible looks and says, “You invented a jet pack in your garage and your first thought was to commit crimes...” “When you put it like that...” Comics sure love their villains that could make more money legally than actually stealing 😂
The Polka-Dot man looks like some villain guy that Megaman has to beat up first and steal his power in order to go to the next level and take out Striped Pijama Man, & Velvet Loafer Man afterwards.
He can create weapons and vechiles etc out of his spots. Batman would be dead if Polka-Dot Man had proper writers. He was effective at the beginning before being changed to a man with a bat...Gunn is the best writer he has had since the 60s.
Logic suggests that dressing as a giant polka-dotted bat would therefore make you a pretty average guy who could really blend into a crowd if you wanted.
Here from the future to say that the movie version of PDM in TSS is a tragicomic character of the 1st degree. His dots are brutal weapons but cause him so much strife. No spoilers but the way he sees the world is sad and hilarious all at the same time. I enjoyed watching your vid about his origin. I think TSS improved the character quite a bit and I had a great time watching him in the movie.
An idea for an update: The reason he wears a polka dot costume is because it throws off computer recognition software. Then make the dots gimick weapons like thermite dots, acid dots for chewing into vaults and stuff.
You know a comic is going to be good when it opens being philosophical about dots . . . Also Mr Polka Dot Man, like many other silver age villains, has a very interesting power that could have worked if they specified more his powers limitations, instead of just "dots do stuff"... also his costume could look better by just covering the mouth.
@@welch_inc6532 True since Polka Dot Man was seen alot with Bloodsport, Harley Quinn, King Shark, Rick Flag, and Ratcatcher 2 in the behind the scenes footage.
I might be in the minority but I'd like for more of these silver age characters revitalized in modern comics like how Zur-En-Arrh was in Morrison's run
Morrison likes to take obscure characters and throw them in the mix. In his current Green Lantern run, he used a character called Halk Kar, who was introduced in the 50s as "Superman's lost brother," who turned out to be a space traveler with amnesia. When his amnesia was cured, he resumed his travels. The story was slightly reworked for Superboy and the "lost brother" turned out to be Mon-El.
I may be in an even bigger minority, but I love to see an old crazy idea revisited, but I often find Morrison's ways of doing so clunky at best and incoherent at worst. And I was a big fan. I just feel like at some point the guy read his own press and started to believe his own hype.
Several things: 1- Out of all the craziest DC characters never in my life I´d thought he´d be making it into live action much less a movie. 2-We can be sure that, if anything, T-Shirts of his costume will be for sale when the movie comes out. 3-Will they make a joke in the movie about a certain specific spot of the body? Like if he can use it as a weapon like the rest of the dots in his costume? 4-I don´t like that they are going to have Arm-Fall-Off-Boy in the movie because the character was created to be made fun of and not to be an actual character in the comics. 5-Please read Grant Morrison´s The Green Lantern as is it a modern take on the Silver Age of the character. 6-At some point do a video on Creeper and Orca. Does anyone think it is possible we´ll see her in live action? Maybe because King Shark will now go to the movies she could take her place in The Flash TV show.
The first story sounded cool interesting but then they stopped using him until a little bit. They then took his powers, kept the suit and gave him a bat which he beat up Gordon with. He is back in the Prime Earth/Rebirth but I'm not sure if they are using him properly. He only needs a decent writer who can him properly. Imagine being able to write for his character in a mini series or something. People want to do Batman or whatever but characters like Polka-Dot Man deserve the time and effort.
This guy should have been a Green Lantern villain. His polka dots seem to work on a similar level. Generating fists, large bubbles, and flying disks, the same kinds of things GL would make from his ring
The dude sounds like some villain guy that Megaman has to beat up first and steal his power in order to go to the next level and take out Striped Pijama Man, & Velvet Loafer Man afterwards

I love that, at 2:13, even the opening blurb tells you things aren’t going to go well, for the Polka-Dot Man, saying: “...he almost became the Master of Batman and Robin! How he did this, and how he met his downfall, you’ll soon know as you follow the career of The Bizarre Polka-Dot Man” It’s nice of them to tell us that he only “ALMOST” defeats Batman and Robin; and that he also meets “His Downfall”, before the story has even started... ...I do so hate surprises haha.
Characters like Polka Dot Man are really fun for me to try and tinker with in my head and figure out how you could make the character work. The idea I had was to go a little Lovecraftian and make the dots something otherworldly and maybe even make Polka Dot Man himself be something you can only loosely interpret as a bunch of dots. Or maybe you could do something maybe with the character having synthesia that manifests as dots to explain the obsession with dots? It'd also be fun to see the character as a kind of meta villain that is aware of comics being half-tone printed and messing with the comic itself. That's a meta direction I've never seen done before.
Another wonderful episode of thank you. I should note that your voice impersonation of Robin was extremely creepy and scary but I liked it. Please do more Robin voices.
I would wear Mr Polka Dot’s costume. I love the Silver Age and all the theme-based businesses in Gotham. I can’t tell you enough how much I enjoy your channel.
Comics Polka-Dot man - If the dot is removed from his costume, it becomes a weapon The Suicide Squad Polka-Dot Man - Infected by a virus that allows him to shoot acidic dots from his body, but the virus slowly kills him if he doesn’t use his powers
Hi Sasha, first time/long time here. Thanks for making my favorite comic vids, you always make me laugh while being informative, well-researched, and insightful! Big fan! When my pal Jon & I saw the DC Fandome announcement for the Suicide Squad lineup, we were struck by what deep cuts certain picks were. We are both DC nerds of some credibility, and some of the new movie Squad were obscure even by our standards. I can't think of a better way to meet some of these more arcane weirdos than through introductory vids on CC! This vid was the perfect intro to the Polka Dot Man. As for the character himself, I'm absolutely gobsmacked his name isn't Ben Day, after the dot printing process used throughout comics history, which in turn was named after its inventor. On the nose? Not for the damn universe that gave us Roy G Bivolo and Edward Nigma, I say! Keep up the great work, and thanks for having me on this comic book journey! Until I come up with a sign-off as clumsy as Bronze Age Hal Jordan, Make Mine Casually Comics!
Polkadot man is my dads favourite dc character he asked me about some obscure comic book characters i knew and i mentioned a couple then i showed him polkadot man and he thought he was the coolest and most goofy character ever.
I actually think this version would make a good villain for Mr. Terrific, with his T spheres and Polkadot with his versatile spots. It's a good match up
Love your Batman voice, it's gravely, yet whimsical... and your Robin sounds like David Lynch when he's acting in twin peaks. Keep up with the great content and greetings from Mexico.
You should follow this up with the Spider-Man villain called -- the Spot. I kid you not, there was a super-villain who debuted in "Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man" #99 who called himself "The Spot", who had a similar polka-dot motif and had the distinction of being the first crook to make Spidey fall down... laughing. Check it out.
I think they honestly made him a legitimate threat power wise in the movie, but also slightly comic relief so you got that right. Now that i think about him and clayface 3 shares kinda of the same dilemma 🤣. Also don't like how they gave him the axe,but i guess they had to with how potential powerful he could have become.
His powers in the movie are explained more as he naturally generates them from his body and he has tech in his suit that helps him control it. But he has to expel them from his body twice a day. or he *dies!*
The Ink Spot is a Tattooed Lesbian bar. While it sounds niche, it was a CRIMINALLY underserved niche and gets business from the neighboring towns. I love knowing that these women have a place that they can be respected and even wanted in Gotham City!
Mr Polka Dot gets the short end of the stick a lot. Even when he appears in Brave and the Bold cartoon, it was only in one episode and only during an imaginary sequence. I suppose Maybe what he really needs is a writer who would actually take him seriously. Or maybe it might be time to past the torch. Bring in a guy who finds the suit left behind and enhances its tech. You do this very well Sasha! Your husband's a Lucky man!
I’m legit hyped for Polka Dot Man which is something I never thought I’d type, been a big fan of David Dastmalchian since the dark knight (2008) and especially Ant Man (2015) he was legit hilarious in that movie, imo the character just works for James Gunn’s vision of the squad plus along with Ratcatcher and Weasel he’s gonna make them household names I mean we are talking about the writer/director who made a talking tree and racoon famous so anything is possible with The Suicide Squad (2021)
@@teend.cfan1591 I'd love a team up between the two. What an a-salt that'd be. The Dynamic Duo would really be put on the spot (I'll walk myself out :)
I love Polka Dot Man! Honestly I hope they don't streamline his powers toooooo much because I'm a bit tired of them trying to make every comic book character super realistic. I want some of that weirdness! you can still have a really strong character with ludicrous powers that don't make any sense. His costume design in the movie is really good, so happy they didn't try to grit-ify it. I hope he throws plenty a dot and I hope they all turn into something different and ridiculous. Anyways, great vid!
If they don't get LMFAO and Lil Jon to revise "Shots" to "Dots" and play it over the ending credits of the upcoming James Gunn Suicide Squad movie it will be a criminally missed opportunity.
Crazy-Quilt has a special place in the Gotham City pantheon because he was Robin's first recurring villain (in Robin's solo series in *_Star-Spangled Comics._*
1. Enjoying the wig. 2. Your "Hooow?" caught me off guard and I laughed at your misery. 3. Does the suit "rejuvenate" the dots? 4. Does Mr. Polka-Dot man double as a door for a cheesy Canadian child's show? 5. Does his external underwear take away useful dot space or is it an irregular shaped dot? 6. Jafir's Black Pearl? I don't remember a Jafir in The Pirates of The Caribbean. Didn't Mr. Polka-Dot man have a dot for a jar of dirty? 7. Is there a Mr. Leopard-Polka-Dot Man? Or is that Heetah? 8. Why am I enjoying my stupid comments so much?
Answer to #8) You are doing just fine, sir. Welcome to my also-brain of over analyzing til the point of regret. ("The point of..." uuuughh. See what I did not mean to do?)
you know... actually this character would be fun to reboot/reinvent! If you replace the dots with spherical drones that attack you like the one in the horror movie 'Phantasm' it would be really fun! You can keep him an odd dresser who just likes polka dot prints too (i personal would just use black and white prints with a punch of color here and there). As goofy as it is it's a very distinct look!
Oh this is a request. I thought you were gonna do a series on characters that are going to be in The Suicide Squad. We need a video on Arm-Falls-Off-Boy
I'm not sure if I could look any more into the bottomless, soulless abyss of the eyes of debut Polka Dot Man. Also, 2:18 reminded me of the video for Groove Is in the Heart.
LEGO Batman gave him some attention, that was the first time I heard of him and I had to do some research thank you for telling others the story you could do a whole series of obscure villains from the LEGO BATMAN movie
Polka Dot Man is Love, Polka dot Man is life. When you got time I genteelly implore you to do a video on Adventure Comics Vol.1 418 & 419. Not just because they are filled with 70's silver age goodness, or because they both have the greatest Black Canary story ever by the legends Denny O'neill & Alex Toth, or Supergirl's slow decent into madness. It's that Supergirl fights a dragon! There are really just fun issues to read.
Never heard of The Polka Dot Man before but he sounds very similar to The Spot, a Spider-Man villain who first appeared in the mid-1980s. Through SCIENCE his body transformed into all white and was covered with many black spots which were portals to another dimension i.e. if you punched him and hit one of these spots your fist would pass into this dimension instead of hitting The Spot, which made it very difficult to hurt him. He could also remove these spots from his body and thrown them at other objects, or just into the air. Then he could pass into one of these spots and appear in another, allowing him to travel great distances instantaneously. He was considered a joke by Spidey (and the readers) when he first appeared, but he was actually able to defeat Spidey since none of Spidey's punches landed. Spot had no super-strength, but by throwing spots all around Spidey he was able to hit him many times in a short period of time. There is a famous panel from the 2000s where Spidey punches the Spot in the chest but his fist goes into a spot and comes out of a spot on The Spot's forehead, meaning Spidey punches himself. He also appeared on the 90s Spidey cartoon and was part of a key overall plot point - Mary Jane fell into one of his spot prototypes (called a "time dilation portal") and went missing for a few seasons.
This sort of ridiculousness is how the '66 Batman TV show happened in why that series completely accurate in tone and scope to the comics. It's also streaming for free right now on the Roku channel. You're welcome.
I'm just hoping theres a moment in The Suicide Squad where Harley is like, "Whoa! How'd you do THAT?" And he either says, "I'm the Polka Dot Man" or, "It's all in the dots"
I saw this comic on the "drugstore rotating rack (Thrifty-Mart)" in 62. My brother always had twelve cents for comics and I did not. I didn't know that it was o.k. to ask strangers for a dime or a penny. Even as a nine-year-old child I thought that DC had lost its marbles. Finally the story manifests in my life. My brother may have even purchased this issue, he didn't share everything with me and if he ever caught me going through his comics box he would have hurt me. The bass in your audio input really overwhelms the other frequencies (mids and highs) and it's hard to listen to. Please roll off the bass just a skooch. Thank you for WonderBread...I mean Polka-Dot Man.
