Solve the hopelessness of poverty, the desperation of stress in everyday life as 40% of our citizens struggle just to stay alive. As the few wealthy continue to extract with their oligarchic corporations. The middle class has been devastated over the last 50 years. poverty as we see people living on the streets everyday. There is no class mobility in the land of the free. We need to re-evaluate the very idea that corporations have the rights of a citizen yet have no social responsibility. We must make capitalism socially responsible or the nation may no longer exist.

How about sending in Special Forces' recon units into the 'Northern Triangle' countries, to identify and 'paint' cartel strongholds for missile strikes, until they stop terrorizing locals to the point of fleeing to our border for asylum?

J.D. Vance, the Republican Senator from Ohio, @24:50 talked about China sending fentanyl precursors to Mexico and that the U.S. could increase tariffs on other Chinese products as a means to make China stop sending the chemicals to Mexico that are then made into fentanyl. Supposedly “learned” people (from all over the government) seem to think that adding a tariff, or increasing an existing tariff, will hurt the importing country, China in this case, and make it monetarily harder for the country to import its goods. Nothing could be farther from the truth! Those people have no earthly idea of how a tariff even works. They just know that the word “tariff” sounds good and so they throw it around like throwing candy from a parade float during the county fair. Tariffs only hurt, and impact, the end consumer - YOU and ME! Tariffs hurt the consumers because a tariff increases the price of an imported good that a business in the United States (the importer) purchases. That tariff, or tax, must be paid by the importer to the government that imposed the tariff. The country that is importing the goods does not pay anything to anyone to import their goods! Because the importer, a U.S. business, has to pay a tax in the form of tariffs on the goods that they are importing, they pass this increased cost onto consumers in the form of higher prices. It is included in the cost of goods that determine the price the importer will sell the taxed item to its customer. Whether that is a middleman or the store that sells the goods to consumers makes no difference. The end result is that we, the consumers - YOU and Me, are the ones that end up paying a higher price for the item because the government wanted to penalize the importing country, again in this case China. CONSUMERS pay the tariff - NOT CHINA or any other country.

@TheOleHermit
@TheOleHermit Год назад
Umm. China is the 'exporter' to Mexican cartel 'importers'/'manufacturers' who become 'illegal smugglers' of fentanyl into the US, without tariffs. Otherwise, you're making a valid point. tRump's tariff wars with China only resulted in China purchasing its soybeans elsewhere, effectively eliminating US farmers' primary customer. S, now they are being compensated with federal funding, aka taxpayer revenues. If heavy tariffs were imposed upon China's base chemicals for fentanyl, then China would only establish a 3rd party middleman nation to ship their chemicals through, who would add their cut and simply inflate the cost to end users. But, that wouldn't stop the addicts.
@billncambo1
@billncambo1 Год назад
I could be wrong, and I'm not willing to sit through Vance again, but I'm pretty sure he said sanctions and not tariffs. Many various ways to sanction China, but yes, Mexico would bear the brunt and pass it along to the consumer.

It feels like there are 2 different topics being discussed here. While treatment for drug addiction is a huge issue and I wholly agree that there should be more of it, it seems that so many of the fentanyl deaths are not attributed to addicts...they are attributed to people taking things they think are something else (even aspirin) that have unknown fentanyl in them. The college students and young adult highlighted in the beginning of the episode weren't addicts of fentanyl...from the report they didn't know they were taking what essentially killed them. Yes, more treatment options for addiction are necessary...but if people are dying from something they don't realize they are taking then they can't be attributed to addicts and treatment centers in that case won't make a difference.

They should jail anybody who has anything to do with that drug, my granddaughter was forced to take fentanyl and she died and was thrown out in the street when they saw that she was dead, so I believe that anyone I mean anyone who has his or her hands on that drug should get life for the lives of our loved ones, no exceptions 😭😭

What do you mean, she was forced? I’m sure your granddaughter chose her friends, and perhaps made a few unwise decisions, but surely you don’t think your granddaughter, if she were still alive, should spend her life in prison for taking fentanyl? Even if she were persuaded by other kids? All kids make mistakes; education is the key.

When I was a hippie in my late teens during the late 1960's, I tried every type of drug. I even did barbituates, once. A year later I read Jethro Kloss' book 'Back To Eden.' From that point on (now am 71) I've been eating healthy foods, no alcohol, no sugar, no MSG, no coffee, no cigs. Youngsters need to get educated and decide whether they want to be healthy, or die young. Another good book: Fasting For Health. Available online.

As long as the demand is there. There will always be a supply. Blame China if you want. Blame the cartels if you want but the problem is here in the states. If they get rid of fentanyl, something else will unfortunately replace it.
