Martin Riese is America's first certified water sommelier, who studies the subtle flavors of bottled water, and prepares menus pairing specific brands with foods. Correspondent Jonathan Vigliotti sits down with Riese to discuss his unique palate, and his thirst for spreading the word on water.

Everyone does! It has to do with the particulates in the water. Water as we know if contains impurities like salts and natural electrolytes because 100% ultra pure water isn't good for us.

@@rumblefish9 water without impurities is distilled water and is 100% fine for you. 🙄 In fact, if you are on a low sodium diet, it’s recommended.

Oh yes, can confirm this is true. The bottled water at work tastes terrible. The brand we have at home is great, and I can taste the differences in other brands too.

It's not just that he can tell the difference, but he has a very indepth knowledge of every notable kind of water. He knows more about water sources all over the world than pretty much everyone else.

Can you also tell what minerals are in the water you drink? Probably not. That’s what sommelier is…their pallet is so robust they can literally tell what part of the world something is from just be the taste. It’s crazy how folks disregard his knowledge all because he’s drinking water instead of flavored water(wine).

Quite a few haters in the comments here. Martin isn't trying to cater to the snobby rich crowd he's trying to educate people on what they most likely didn't know prior. I left the tasting knowing a great deal more than I did before. It wasn't a waste of time or money and it really just felt like an interactive college class with friends.

Everyone acts like I'm nuts when I say I prefer one water over another, I love Fuji and can't stand Dasani, I will go out of my way to get Aquafina over Dasani. I remember the first Spanish word I learned was "agua" on Sesame Street and would ask my dad for "a glass of agua".

Aquafina is the same thing as Dasani, both are purified (cleaned up) tap water. One is made by Pepsi and the other is made by Coca Cola…..

Yes, water from different places have different tastes. That being said, these waters are put in plastic bottles and then they sit on shelves. When you finally buy it and drink it, you are drinking plastic marinated water. Then the empty plastic bottles sit on Earth for eternity, leaching into more water. Not worth it. Perhaps the ones in glass bottles are not toxic, but their prices are insane. Perhaps Martin should encourage people to live simpler and consume less if he really wants people to be more aware of how precious water is.

You are right, I said in many times in many other media outlets, maybe we should start to stop drinking processed tap water in plastic bottles, we could save already 64% of plastic bottles consumed in the US.

West Coast water tastes awful and is hyperchlorinated to death. But Californians don't know better and never complain, except passive-aggressively, so nothing actually changes. Tax your rich and build actual infrastructure, California, "fifth largest economy" with disgusting, hyper-chlorinated tap. Not everyone is rich enough to PAY for water.

Not any better, just has a different mineral composition. Arrowhead water is high in calcium bicarbonate which a lot of people don’t like, it’s an acquired taste. Personally I love Arrowhead and all natural spring waters. I’m not picky.

That’s exactly the reason I am doing this. Bring attention to water , start the conversation about water, because millions don’t have access to clean and save drinking water. I even talked about it on the segment.
