The worst part is that he is still invited as an expert on TVA sports and still defend the ref no matter what they do. He always gets mad at anyone questioning the refs decisions.
@@idontgivetkachuk Yeah......Everytime the TVA announcers wants to discuss a goal under challenge, or a major penalty, they invite Stephane Auger on the mic to "give his toughts" and I'm always like "SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP!! NOBODY LIKES YOU!"
Wes McCauley is amazing :) Can't believe a french canadian sports network actually gave Auger a mike to analyse today's refs work. Might as well ask Harold Shipman to rate other doctor's work...
Imagine Auger AND #13 Dan O`Halloran being together as refs... I think O`Halloran is the worst ref to evver enter NHL... But this Auger is a pice of work also
I've got a buddy that played AHL years ago with the Milwaukee Admirals and he had met some of the Nashville Predators that said they were close to taking suspensions for breaking a stick across auger's back. That's how much he was hated.
Kerry Fraser's missed call on Gretzky in 1993 is so unfortunate knowing it probably came from the best referee the NHL has ever had. He is the all-time leader in games officiated in the NHL, has called games for both the Atlanta Flames and Thrashers and was once voted the most consistent referee in the league by players. Everyone make mistakes once in a while - some more than others - and it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy than Fraser
Met him when I was a kid in the mid 90s at a dock where he kept his boat. He was a very nice man and promised to send me an Autograph picture of Lindros...I received it 2 weeks later. Awesome man!
@@idontgivetkachuk yeah, I lost all respect for McLean after that. I get it, he’s a ‘company man’ and just did his part to defend the integrity of the Officiating in the League: but all he did was bury Burrows, and put a target on the Canucks.
@Wow yup. Like how he tacitly supported everything Don Cherry said until the public backlash was too big and too obvious (and the League decided to toss Cherry out), so suddenly there’s Ron all ‘we need to be more sensitive, so Don’s out’. Gutless, fake principled company man.
@Wow sold out on Don Cherry for a non incident people got triggered over was what did it for me. I’ll call him a sell out as much as I can when and if I watch HNIC now. (I actively boycott it in protest to canning Grapes)
McLean is a coward dude stabbed Don Cherry the man who made him who he is today in the back just to save his own job, as Mishkin said on Goldeneye for the N64 "Even trusted friends are capable of betrayal"

ive noticed a difference these days with post game interviews, it always was nicer when the interviews were done in the locker rooms and not in some booth, idk just seems oddly more cool to me. on a different note keep up the great work man, your videos are truly amazing and i will continue to watch.
The players were getting in trouble for saying stuff before they had a chance to settle down after a heated battle. Great for fans but bad for players.
I’m so happy that you decided to do a video about that POS! Stéphane Auger is by far the worst referee in NHL’s history! I can’t even express how much I hated him, he was absolutely terrible, he shouldn’t have made the NHL. No surprise that Chris Lee and him are best friends….
Nothing pissed me off more than when Tim Peele went “I wanted to get a penalty in on Nashville early” guy talks like being an official is playing the game😂 delusional
I agree that Chris Lee is by far the worst ref in today’s NHL, but he’s still behind Auger at the moment, that could very well change in a few years though, because Lee is absolutely terrible and if he keeps it up, he could surpass Auger real fast! Fun fact: did you know that Lee and Auger are best friends? Yeah…you can’t make that shit up
This is the best video you have ever done because it's completely original. Nobody has ever done a video on Auger before and so very few people know about this stuff. An informative and original video.
Refs should be held accountable for their calls. They should be forced in front of the press exactly like players are after games. The leagues hides them. Explain the calls, or missed calls. Even if they are lousy explanations, they are explanations. Let's hear them.
"Accountable", as in explain yourself if my team lost. Missed calls? Will there be fans pointing to video replays showing the missed called that went against your team? Anyone connected to the NHL in a professional capacity will be laughing at this idiotic idea. Actually, every official's performance is reviewed by the league but biased fans are not included in it for a good reason.
@@ThexSleepingDragon Yes there is... they don't go to replays for missed penalties in hockey. It's just the way things are. It's still a human controlled game. You want them to stop play and review every single missed call? That would be boring. Every team goes through something like this so you can't even begin to say it's unfair. If we're just using digital cameras for everything we wouldn't need umpires or refs at all... not worth the investment in my opinion.
@@floxy20 What's the difference if a ref does questions after a game or goes on TSN/Sportsnet long after the fact? I know for a fact Fraser has done it for several of his games but mainly talked about the Gretzky high stick on Gilmour he missed costing the Leafs a playoff game, I give him prop's for coming clean it was a very "Adult" thing to do.. If you have to hide the truth or even sugar coat it you might be slipping down a very dark rabbit hole of mistrust and corruption... them talking about the games and owning there mistakes can only be a good thing for the league and it's image.
While it would be hilarious in a world without salty losers, I’d feel bad for the good refs who either miss a call, or have to answer the questions from, or about, the losing team/players
Chris Lee is so far and beyond the worst ref in the game. He is the Gretzky of bad calls and losing control. The other refs can only hope to be second worst.
Great vid man! Augers “retirement” announcement was great. I remember reading he wasn’t given any playoff games in 2011 as a result of his nonsense, I could be wrong tho.
I remember this game! Burrows had a hat trick in each of the last two games and had two this game already. Would have set a record for 3 hat tricks in 3 consecutive games.
I knew this would be about Stephane Auger right away, even before I saw the thumbnail. Officials are not supposed let their personal feelings dictate their calls, it’s too bad that he did just that:(
So did I but I am a Canucks fan. I feel like this whole situation smeared the Canucks image and possibly caused other referees to dislike their team. Unfortunately Burrows comments may have put that particular team under a magnifying glass.
A really bad non-call that influenced the outcome of a playoff game was Kessler getting away with pulling Cam Talbot's pad with his hand, inside the crease. But then again, Edmonton is a saturated hockey market of just over 4 million, split between two teams while California is a largely untapped market of nearly 40 million split between 3 teams ...
Auger's "retirement" party should have been held in the sin bin with party guests including those falsely penalized...Activities to be determined by the players! 🤨 Misconduct THIS🥊 Auger! 😁 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 video, my friend. 👏
Funny you brought up Tim Peel. That clown also got the "retirement package" like Auger, so it further credits suspicions that he got the axe for making deliberate blown calls to affect the outcome of games. Refs like this are exactly why there needs to be a third party mediator for officiating, as crap like this needs to be corrected swiftly for the betterment of the game. People pay to see a hockey game, not a zebra's overinflated ego on display
Tim peel was just doing what the league wants. He just got caught saying it. Auger was different he went into probably more then just the burrows game knowing he was going to screw a certain team because if something that happened in a previous game
@@chrisdranfield3828 Problem is he consistently made those types of calls against Nashville for a few years before that audio clip. It was a complete feud situation between the Preds and Peel. It stemmed from Peel ignoring the boarding by Bortuzzo on Fiala, and knee on knee that took Joey out of the playoffs. Just look at how the players act towards a ref and you can tell when there is bad blood between the two parties
I had held Islanders season tickets for years and me and my buddies would find the official lineup sheets every game.Whenever we saw Stephane Auger was one of the referees in the game,we would be saying "Aw Crap!!" because he was so terrible at what he did. He didn't even try to hide how bad he was.
Auger is now working for tva sports (french version of sportsnet) and he did work for tnt and larry brooks got pissed when he saw auger on tnt lmfao And also renaud lavoie almost got to a fight of words when auger was defending chris lee during last year playoffs lol
Actually, TVA Sports is owned by Quebecor Media, not Rogers (Sportsnet's owner). But, it was when Rogers announced that it would partner with TVA Sports to provide production resources, and sub-licensing of French-language rights to some of Sportsnet's event programming that TVA Sports really took off. Anyway, the rest is true
@@Feurmc_ I was trying to remember that name. Wasnt he the ref who just watched and enjoyed Suzuki being punched more than once in front of the Vegas goal? And about Ogre working at TVA??? WHAT??!? I think Jeremy Roenick called him Ogre or those hole making machines?
How is he still a Ref?! So little accountability for Refs, when it is one of the easiest people on the ice to monitor! If he is this crooked, he is probably making money out of it!
Most Canucks fans can tell you about Burrows and Auger and that game against Nashville. One of the most disgusting displays of refereeing I've ever seen. It wasn't even about blatant missed calls which can be attributed to human error. Auger made the game personal with his phantom calls especially the last 2. Did anyone ever see the clip of Auger winking at Burrows after the 4th phantom call?...."Payback's a bitch!" No one can ever trust a ref who puts his ego ahead of calling a fair game. After the Canucks-Nashville game on Dec 8, the NHL probably should have looked into future Canuck games with Auger on the slate and brought in a replacement ref just to avoid this kind of thing because there is no way the league didn't know about Auger's reputation for making things personal. Anyways, great vid and thanks for posting.
5:23 With good reasons, Burrows was so mad when asked about Auger, during the post game interview, that it feels like he was riding a pedal bike. lol Couldn’t stand still.
He is now in charge of referee development for Hockey Quebec. Scary. Also the hit on Burrows was not diving. The issue was after he was plastered into the boards, he went to get up and he fell down. Which has never happened after a hard hit either clean or dirty.
In Britain we had a ref called Nigel Boniface who regularly got criticised for his style of officiating being all about himself. (He regularly called games like the 1975 Flyers were involved) Conversely we also had a female ref Joy Tottman who was easily one of the best officials I ever saw in Male or female hockey (at least in GB) I'm also reminded of the 2002 womens Olympic final when Canada had to kill 11 power plays that to this day I still find baffling. As a neutral it was so clearly biased I was really happy Canada won that game.
Great video amigo, wish people would talk about the poor officiating in the NHL more.. this "balanced penalties" thing needs to go! the more disciplined team should win, enough with the ghost calls simply to keep the penalties balanced.. if a team wants to try to cheat to win and play undisciplined then so be it but don't punish the other team simply to balance the penalties specially if the other team is actually trying hard to play a disciplined game.. ITS PATHETIC!
Kerry Fraser changed the outcome of who played in the Stanley Cup finals in 1993 when he refused to call an obvious penalty on Gretzky. That’s a bad referee.
I've had this one ref. Futsal tournament. Every year he was one of 3 officials and sure enough he would be officiating majority of our games. Felt like there was a man advantage the whole game. Playing against the ref as well
In juniorB (which isn't good; but still decent hockey, once in a blue moon you'll see a 7rounder play in that category) I played the same team twice in a week-end. Penalty minutes ended at 210 for us, 0 for them. Guys was fired and the 8suspensions my team had were all cancelled. Games were replayed at a later date 😆 This man did not know how to be subtle about it. Edit : I myself had a suspension for fighting in the last 5minutes of the game. But like....they had ZERO penalties...so who tf did I even fight against? 😆
As a Canuck fan, I remember that incident. What pissed me off was the coach had no balls and dint say anything to him. Vigneault was as useless as teets on a bull! Tortorella , Neilson, or Quinn would have had something to say to him, fine or not! Questionable refs should not be allowed to ref in the playoffs too.So much on the line, you dont need a referee with an agenda.
The refs are supposed to be evaluated by the league during the season and only the highest scores do the playoffs. Not sure if they are re-evaluated during the playoffs to advance, or if it is only based on regular season. Does anybody know?
Auger vs Torts would end one of two ways 1- Torts channels his inner Latrell Sprewell and just snatches Auger up and chokes him 2- Torts busts into the referee locker room with a stick and goes Tony Bananas on Auger. Either way, at the press conference after, Torts will refer to Auger as Gutless and tell him to shut his yap and park his ego in his pocket.
I'm fairly certain that game in Vancouver (and maybe one or two more assignments on the same trip) was the last time Auger crossed the Rockies to work an NHL game. I watched the newspaper summaries for the next year and he was confined to the East and given time off when the Canucks visited for a season and a half before he reffed another Vancouver game against (of course) the Islanders! When the league announced 'nothing to see here' a few days later the Canucks released to the media the pre-game footage showing clearly that the league was looking the other way. $2500 is a ridiculously small fine for criticizing a referee the way Burrows did and I thought it would be 10-20x higher with a lengthy suspension. Burrows would have been better off to write down his recollection of the discussion, seal it in an envelope, find a reporter after the warm-up and give him the envelope with instructions to open it after the game. That would have proved his case and Auger would be toast. But who can blame him for not believing what Auger was saying. As for Ron MacLean's reaction, it was predictable: Vancouver being strong has never been in HNIC's interests.
The worst is he still has a job on tva sports and viewed as an expert by other members of the broadcast, this dude absolutely unlistenable and full of himself
There is a ref in the league right now that is clearly gambling on hockey. I expected this to be about him. The league obviously knows and will never out him because of the NBA situation. Watch a game Gord Dwyer refs next year. Dude makes phantom calls against only one team in EVERY game he does.
It didn’t look like a clear dive to me, he got freaking hammered against the boards. Anyway Burrows just looks and sounds like a stud hockey player. I love this channel!
Stephane Auger is currently working for TVASports, one of the french sport channel covering the NHL, notably the Habs. Auger is still behaving badly with his colleagues, most of them are former french canadian NHL players. He can't discuss referee calls without arguing with his colleagues or being condescending. I do recall some years ago an heated discussion on a disallowed goal with Hall of Fame Mike Bossy. It was disgusting to see Auger loosing his mind and telling Bossy something like : "I'm a ref and you don't so all your points are not stupids". Bossy was really good to remain calm and chill while your colleague is throwing shit to you on live TV.
I'm glad you specified "nhl history" because we had a ref in midgets who was talking to a emergency substitute coach instead of the play, then tried to get that "coach" banned from the rink for provoking a fight that broke out during their conversation...
I would preface this with “in modern history.” This is because full time officials (that is full time Referees and Linesmen) didn’t come out until the 1950’s. In fact until the 1930’s really Officials where hired on a ad hoc bias, meaning that they were hired to work only one game at a time. So we can’t really know how bad (or good) the ad hoc officials were, though yes Mr. Auger looks to be really poor (as someone who has worked on the local level as a Umpire-in-Chief or head of local Little Leauge Umpires, representing all the bad characteristics that someone can have in the profession.)
Auger is wrong on more than 90% of his opinions during live games on TVA Sports broadcasting. I cringe almost every time opens his mouth to give his opinions.
@@LeGrosHanz is that a joke? Wtf do most players do when another player annoys them? Either fights them or put them a headlock and rip them down to the ice. Player does something stupid and is normally targeted but if you were to do it against a ref it’s what senseless violence. That’s the dumbest shit I’ve ever heard
@@noodkiller123 Are we watching the same sport? Most players don't behave violently because it will most likely end up with a penalty. If you want to win, at anything, acting like neanderthal is probably not the way... BTW, have you ever fought a 250 pounds guy on skates? Acting tough and being tough are wildly different things.
@@LeGrosHanz who tf is acting tough? You’re just acting like a dumbass. Hockey players violently attack one another all the time. I mean shit if you look up hockey scrums they give you 10 plus minutes of them attacking one another over absolutely nothing, and that’s only in one month! Why ask a dumbass question like that either in the first place? If I say yes you aren’t gonna believe me and if I say no even tho it has nothing to do with me you’d somehow make it into a chirp
Tim Peel seemed to be justifying a weak call as balancing the penalties, something every hockey fan knows they do. Not in the same Universe as Stephane Auger
2:37 Good on JJ there. Nobody should be cheering for someone to get hurt no matter how bad they are at their job. That man has great morals. I've admired him my entire life.
This is an article written 4/1/2024: Stephane Auger, a name that once stirred considerable controversy in the NHL, remains a figure of intrigue and discussion long after his departure from the league. Auger's career as an NHL referee was marked by incidents that sparked debates on officiating integrity, player-referee dynamics, and the pressures faced by officials in professional sports.
As a Devils fan who doesn’t like the Islanders, and as a Montrealer who’s never heard of this Montreal-based referee, I already can’t stand him just after hearing about Nielsen’s penalty
Back in the sixties and seventies it was Wally Harris who was known to call next to no penalties and just be out on the ice for a skate but the players liked him, said that they liked how he let the guys play the game.
Over the years I have worked with some refs that got off being a focal point in the game. They would constantly bicker with coaches, players, parents and drag the game on and on. Then at the end of the game, everyone is screaming at him. They got of on it. Myself, I would keep communication with players from both teams constantly and MANAGE the game rather than police it. If I was calling a penalty, it is 100% a penalty. I would call it with no fanfare or theatrics. Just get the offender off the ice and drop the puck! 99% of the time when I was skating off the rink I heard nothing from the stands and every now and then players and coaches would say I called a good game. I would always tell newer refs, call what you see, don't make a show of it, but do it with confidence. Last thing you want is to be considered the reason for the outcome.
So true. What you choose to call and how you make the calls make a huge difference. Every ref sometimes makes mistakes. it's a fast game and we are human. Sometimes the only thing you can do is own up to it. Nothing worse than a ref that is arrogant and holds grudges. Give me a 14 year old kid referee making mistakes any day over someone that think the game is there for their own narcissistic goals. I'll protect that kid...the arrogant ass is on his own. Call the obvious calls, call the dangerous calls, and call the plays that change possession. Otherwise...you are much better off letting the players play and keeping the game going.
I should have said best example as I realize now this could be taken as a criticism on the creator of the video. Best worst example if you know what I mean, like he’s the worst. I feel like I’ve gone down a rabbit hole with this that only I cared about but just making sure you know I meant no disrespect and the video was bang on great lol
I love how Wes says “5 minutes for fighting” he gets so into it. Onto what I am talking about here. It’s funny how y’all think he’s the worse ref in the NHL, but if this ref from the ECHL made it to the NHL it would be him. We called him”Mcnuttless” I think my mom screwed up his name once and it stuck but he was so bad even the Stockton Thunder, the old Bakersfield Condors rival we never agreed but everyone in this league hated Mcnuttless once our captain got nailed into the boards (which was a boarding that should have been a game misconduct) but it wasn’t, me and my mom had season tickets behind the Condors bench and he came over talked to our coach and said it was a clean hit, and I leaned over the railing told him “come here I’ll show you a clean hit” but this was one instance, if you want to see the kind of job he did, then look up “Bakersfield Condors Ontario Regin line brawl” there’s a goalie fight in that video, and you’ll see the kind of job he did. Ps he had beef with our coach in college and took it out on the players
Auger sure screwed the Canucks over. Probably other teams too. The thing is that I don't just blame Auger, the problem is with the NHL. They use refereeing to control the "entertainment value" of their product, instead of just calling penalties as they arise. I mean what else is "game management" other than a euphemism to thinly veil manipulating the refereeing in order to improve profits. They're trying to attract new fans but they're pissing off us old fans. I still like hockey but I don't like the Bettman led NHL, mostly because of the highly suspect refereeing.
You always make good content my friend, But now your boy in in Florida. What an off season, everywhere. I'm an Oilers fan myself. But at least you got some return for Tkachuk, sad to see Johnny Hockey leave for nothing. Anyways keep creating, I always enjoy your content. Keep up the good work buddy.
