Meet the YouTube Botanist with a Thick Chicago Accent and Foul Mouth

Call it botany served Chicago style.
Joey Santore - who also goes by "Joe Blowe" and "Tony Santoro" online - isn’t your typical plant expert: the amateur botanist travels across North America identifying and discussing the wildlife he encounters on his RU-vid channel Crime Pays But Botany Doesn’t.
Originally from the Chicago suburb of La Grange, Santore films his nature excursions with his smartphone, rattling off scientific names with a thick Chicago accent and making comical, sometimes profanity-laden, societal observations.
Santore promised to keep the curse words to a minimum while we walked through Wolf Road Prairie, an 80-acre nature preserve with native prairie, savanna and wetland habitats in Chicago’s western suburbs.
Story and video by Evan Garcia

@Spamhard
@Spamhard 3 года назад
"Amateur" just refers to the fact he has no official qualifications in the field and does it as a hobby. "Crass approach" just means he tends to swear a lot and isn't as formal as one expects from the world of botany (or any information videos tbh). Neither are terms of insult, or are indicative of his intelligence, they're just descriptors.

@@dshepherd107 thank you for the reply D Shepherd. I must say, you mentioned I should get a degree in Biology (BA or BS). Instead of going into research. What jobs would a biology degree yield that would be more lucrative than research? Personally I thought that's the only jobs available to science majors. Unless you specialize in something like Microbiology then you become a microbiologist, which I'm not sure if even they are paid well. Social media sounds interesting. Theres so many ways to make yourself your own boss with social media If you "make it" per se. Personally the thought of relying on patreon support isnt the best idea unless you're making loads of money you can put into retirement, Roth IRA's etc. Truly, thank you for taking the time to give such a considerate reply to a prospecting scientist, as it were. I hope good things continue to come your way.

I just dropped a comment today; after his video walking the scrub under flyovers and along train tracks. Refuge of the homeless amid urban desolation. Wanted to let him know how I would have liked to walk with him and his dogs, listening, talking crap and feeling safe. Now after seeing him, I'm embarrassed 'cos I know I would have fallen in love. How inappropriate (I think).

Actually, most freight train crews have specific "routes" in a particular leg of the line, so that the trains can always have fresh and alert drivers. Usually 1-200 miles iirc, and that's for the major mainline railroads, like CSX, Canadian Pacific, Norfolk Southern, and BNSF.

I was born and raised in Chicago. I moved to FL 3 years ago. This is the FIRST time i have ever been able to hear the "chicago accent." Also, to grow ANYTHING in chicago, besides corn or beans, is absolutely astonishing. That place is a frozen tundra 6 months out of the year.
@ericjsmoczynski4374
@ericjsmoczynski4374 3 года назад
The soil is also post-glacial lake muck with lots of clay. The number of plants and flowers that can grow in that soil is limited. The border of Lake Chicago, which retreated 5000 years ago is roughly that of Cook County.
@BadgerCheese94
@BadgerCheese94 Год назад
Why do people who moved to Florida from the Midwest always exaggerate the length of the cold? Frozen tundra? Buddy its Illinois, not Nunavut. 6 months? Not even. I moved from Florida to Texas and now Minnesota, further north than all of Illinois and much of Wisconsin, and not even here are there "6 frozen months." More like three and a half or so. And I see more plant life and flowers than Florida. In the spring you see more flowers in a Midwestern garden than in an entire Florida city I swear to God.

@@jonsey3645 No, he has a sense of humour. He uses it in his videos, which is one of the reasons why he is a successful teacher. He's a self taught botanist, which means he doesn't use "scientific speech" 100% of the time, like most credentialed botanists use, which makes them a bit dull. I'm a self taught botanist, too. He has my utmost respect, because I know how hard it is to be taken seriously by the scientific community unless you have a bunch of letters after your name, and a Dr. in front of your name. Joey is a perfect reminder of why it should be a nearly-criminal offense for people like the DeVos family to be allowed to influence anything related to colleges, tuition, student debt, etc. It should be a crime to gatekeep higher learning, knowledge, and usable training/certification behind such ludicrous pay walls. I'm not saying Joey here dropped out of college because of costs, or that he didn't drop out because it simply wasn't for him, or that he doesn't like driving trains, or anything like that. What I am saying is that Joey is a brilliant reminder that there ARE just an incredible number of people out there who have a very rare kind of sponge-like mind for a given subject, but who end up doing something completely unrelated and unfulfilling to them because the necessary certification (i.e. diplomas,) are gatekept behind ludicrous paywalls and other money or status obstacles. The privilege to receive a piece of paper that declares you knowledgeable enough to participate in a given career, is a privilege of people with money, but that rare mind for a given subject has absolutely nothing to do with wealth or income. It's unfathomable the American system has become what it is. You know, when the Boomers were in school, they were able to pay for their degrees with just a part-time job. School was _very_ inexpensive for the most part. But they ruined that excellent status-quo. Damn, man. What a profoundly sad state of affairs.
