I had a 2-XL as a kid, loved this little dude! Loved him so much, in fact, I used to bring him to parties in high school to play heavy metal cassettes on him. Guy could belt out Ozzy and Pantera like a pro and entertain a crowd 😅
this has taken me right back 29 years instantly - there should be counselling before videos like this!! Love it though, it's unlocked so many old memories I forgot I had!
i had a black sabbath tape and a led zeppelin tape that i played on a Teddy Ruxpin. i was always disappointed that his mouth wouldn’t move with the lyrics 😅
Ummm... Tomy? This awesome little guy was made by Tiger Electronics in 1992 and was a revamped version of the 1978 2XL made by MEGO Toys. Nice video though and great points. I loved this toy as a kid and when I saw one on EBay I just had to scoop him up. Haha! I love how angry he gets at the end of the tape if you don’t turn him off. I guess it was some sort of means of getting the kid to conserve battery or something if they fell asleep with the bot running and put that alarm there to wake them so they would turn the unit off.
I'm glad you liked the ending of the tape. I thought that was funny also! :) You are right about the history though, Tiger Electronics is the manufacturer of this 2-XL revamp. When this 2-XL came to the UK it was rebranded as Tomy. I've also read that when the tapes were translated and re-packaged for different markets they changed some questions in certain places. :D Check it out >> www.2xlrobot.com/moreinfo/international.html
@@frankiezzi1359 oh. OK. Thanks for the information. I didn’t know that. Even two years later, I still think two XL is a great toy. I still run mine once in a while to keep the belts from seizing.
His voice is really deep in this one. I've been looking for this tape for a while. I've got the cassette and 8-track versions and also a display version of the cassette player that I can't get to play, but sadly they're in storage right now.
I remember having this when I was a kid! Had this tape and the sports world tape as well! Really nostalgic playing along with this again, thanks ever so much!
I had one of these! People have always joked that you can count on me to interject with an interesting yet useless factoid at the most random of times...example - making French fries for dinner and I start randomly telling my friend the story of how the potato chip was invented...which came.about after a Karen kept.returning the fries to the kitchen.and.demanding the chef slice tjem.thinner! I learned from Tomy 2XL! I blame this little robot for filling my tiny head with corny dad.jokes and useless facts, both of which I have pulled out several times during my adult life, hahaha!!! 😂😂😂 I spent hours with Tomy and I loved him!! ❤❤❤
I’m pretty sure you’re making a joke here, but for anyone who doesn’t understand how this works… A cassette tape has four tracks on it. Left and right audio for side A, and left and right audio for side B. Usually you only experienced two of those at a time. If you tried to experience all four of them, you would hear one side going backwards. Which, trust me, you don’t want to hear. Anyway, if you record them all in the same direction however, you can switch between them just like an eight track. That’s all the A, B, C, D buttons do: choose which track you’re listening to. I assume there was something in these models that prevented a kid from putting the tape in the other way, and listening to it in the wrong direction. There were actually professional cassette recorders that used us to give you four track recording capability. I’m thinking of the Tascam model 100 as an example, which included a built in sound mixer, and gave you the ability to listen to some tracks and record on others. Trying to do for cassettes what big studios were doing on multiple track 1/2” and 1” magnetic tape. I actually still have one of those Tascams around somewhere, although the cassette portion doesn’t work anymore.
My cousin gave me one of these in the 2000s. I ended up just playing regular tapes in it and found a hidden fast Forward button between the rewind and stop button where that little pipe thing is. You need to adjust the speed of this, either change the batteries or open him up and adjust the motor speed usually a small control on the board.
@@Clara_Page Yes, well mine did. I cut off the plastic between the rewind and stop buttons and there is a tab that you can press down and then Fast Forward engages. They just used a very basic cassette player mechanism for this but used a 4 track audio head. I wish I still had mine that I got from my cousin because I would restore it and keep the hidden FF button.
My 2XL sits on the mantle on my fire place fun to play with. It was my grandparents when they passed I bought the house and found that no one took him so I knew right where he was going lol. Good video never had this tape.
I miss my 2xl. The last time I saw him was in 1998 and he stopped working and eventually I lost him. I think of him as woody and I think of myself as andy from toy story! 😪
Interesting that the speed increases as the tape gets further along. I originally thought there was a power supply issue, but now I am thinking there might be a belt issue. You might try replacing the belts.
Hm, it should probably should have been more specific and said "mammal" rather than "animal" for that first question. Ticks can't jump and are in the animal kingdom. Anyway, I was obsessed with 2-XL when I was ~10 years old - thanks for posting. It was great to see this little robot again!
@@sopeachygaming2822 Yeah, I noticed that too. It seemed to work OK with the playback going in one direction, but if I chose an answer that required playback on the other side of the tape the speed slowed down. :( Anyways, good luck with your purchase!
So is the 2-XL Robot some kind of video game accessories since it was sold by Tiger Electronics in the 1990’s? Or was it mainly sold as a physical toy product?
I've never seen 2XL branded Tomy, I thought this version was made by Tiger. Was this Tomy version sold only in Japan? I believe Tomy is a Japanese company.
