Bottomley Evergreen & Farms is located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, approximately 10 miles southeast of Sparta, North Carolina. It is a family-operated business owned and operated by Blan Bottomley and his son Mitchell. They give their pumpkins special treatment so they are prettier, cleaner, and last longer. Bottomley pumpkins are planted through a cover crop such as rye so the pumpkins have a nice soft, clean bed to grow on so they will be clean and ready for sale. Bottomley Evergreens is also a large supplier of sweet corn, cabbage, and cantaloupes and has also grown into one of the largest shippers and suppliers of Christmas Trees and Christmas Greens in the US. They provide top quality Fraser Fir from the Mountains of Northwest North Carolina and Southwest Virginia.

This fall I got some surplus pumpkins from a Bottomley operation after WalMart and the supermarkets got first choice so we could decorate near Charlotte. With their green thumbs, nobody near Bottomley farms should go hungry. There will always be plenty of corn, apples, milk, greens, and pumpkins. After observing the Spanish conversations among workers, I wonder why poor mountain folk impacted by plant and mine closings don't offer their labor so Hispanic laborers have to be imported.

You don't want them near you ! They could careless about the impact they can due to the people around there farms ! They have caused our family great distress !! It's been brought to their attention and they just turn their heads. If the customers they sell to new what they do to get the product they would probably refuse to buy from them ! It's sad !

What did you find about the effect of pesticides and groundwater depletion? We have a summer home near some Blue Ridge Christmas tree operations, which hasn't been affected by pesticides. As for water, there are rather few straws in the drink, so water is very clean and plentiful, even prone to flash flooding. They choose localities where extra water drains off, rather than drowning plants' roots. I prefer to drink water and garden in the loamy soil of this region, rather than struggling with the hard clay and muddy water and land use restrictions near the big cities.

Tor Roberts ,sorry for the delay , the impact of chemicals is not what we have a major problem . However they have in the past used helicopters to spread it and you had to go indoors because it would cover our homes and property. Our problem was with bees they would place 50 to 100 hives on the property in a single location near our homes . They would engulf our homes and we could not go out side ! We have a child with a disability who only loves to be outside . He doesn’t recognize dangers. They would not move the bees around to different locations on the farm . They ignored us ! And are rubbing it in our face by putting them in the same place year after year ! We have begged them to stop ! We have come to the conclusion they enjoy tormenting people!

@@carlmills2751 This is very interesting. Why do you think your home has not been affected by pesticides? Chemicals (made to kill) being sprayed all over must have an affect on the surroundings as well as soil errosion and contaminating groundwater.

@mays9185 it’s well known Bottomley farms is one of the largest environmental law breakers in the state of North Carolina. Absolutely no regard for the negative impact to the communities around them.
