This original documentary series follows adoptee musician Dan's incredible journey to Korea to find not only his biological family but also himself. A story of identity, family, and love, the documentary also features many special guest appearances.
DANakaDAN's album, STUNTMAN, has officially released! Inspired by this journey, this full length album features collaborations with Clara C, Travis Graham, AJ Rafael, Paul Dateh, David Choi, Priska, Sam Kang, Kero One, Paul Kim and many more.

What you said about wanting to make sure that you were not being disrespectful of the birth family search process really resonated with me. What I want you to know is that for me, and many other adoptive mothers watching this video, this experience is educating me about the emotions, and process that go into the search. I can only imagine what it will be like for my daughter to meet her birth family one day. So while filming your experience may seem to make it less personal for you. I appreciate your sacrifice to let others walk in your shoes and see your experience. Thank you!

I know you have mixed emotions about sharing your story to the world... but in my eyes, you are helping THOUSANDS of people gain better insight in all the different aspects of adoption. Not just Korean adoptees but also domestic and international adoptees, their adoptive families and extended families, and biological families. I'm blown away, so far! On to Part 3 :) THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR STORY!!

Does China have some things like this? I mean: I'm also adopted, I was born in China and now I live in Belgium and I actually would like to meet my real parents too.. But China is more closed towards adoption I guess.. But if anyone knows, you should tell me please
@snowgarden15
@snowgarden15 10 лет назад
I think it's unlikely as most adopted Chinese were left without notes and most have no way of tracing because of weird laws on adoption that makes it actually illegal to leave children so birth parents could go to prison if they are found out. You're more likely to be able to have contact with foster parents. Here's a link more about Chinese adoptees and contact www.holtinternational.org/adoptees/chinesefaq.shtml

@Stiasteny
@Stiasteny 10 лет назад
snowgarden15 Indeed, that's what I was thinking too. When my parents went to China to pick me up, the orphanage told them that they should never come back because they were going to destroy every (official) paper/note about the/my adoption...
@haruharu_letsgo
@haruharu_letsgo 10 лет назад
Hi Stiasteny. Before I approached Dan to film this documentary with him, I watched another doc called "Somewhere Between" which follows 5 Chinese-American adoptees. It's what inspired me to approach Dan about filming him going to Korea and it eventually lead to looking for his birth family. You should start researching online, talk to your parents, look up old records for clues and your adoption agency. Even if they destroyed the documents, you'll never know until you give it a shot. I wish you luck.

9:50 Thanks for sharing your story, Dan. I don't think you are being disrespectful. Yours is an important story to tell, and so many are positively impacted by your choice to share it with the world. I don't know who you are (sorry I don't follow your music). I found a link to this because I support international adoption and it was in a recommended link. And I also subscribe to wong fu! I think what you are doing is really enlightening for those that have parents that were adopted. My poor mother who is almost 100 has no idea where she come from and it still weighs on her mind. Her family never told her and she never asked. What you are doing is important to understand what happens when adoption happens to two families and to one child that didn't have a chose in any of it.

This was really inspiring to watch. People always ask me if I'm adopted, considering I'm half-Korean, half-Chinese, and my last name is very European. It was actually my dad who was adopted and growing up in a primarily white and Hispanic area of Texas made him feel more estranged, especially after his adoptive father left his adoptive family too. Before my father passed away when I was a child, he had tried to find his birth parents. With technology now, I wonder if I can find them for him. Your documentary has really given me some insight on how he felt and how I can fulfill one of his wishes. Thank you sincerely.

Wow thank you for bringing your viewers along during this incredibly emotional time! And I sort of understand your nervousness over it possibly being a scam, etc. My mother left Korea when she was 14 after she met my father. She stayed in contact with her family for a while after, but stopped once they constantly asked for more and more money. It broke her heart to do it, but she doesn't regret it (as her mother was very abusive as well) I'm happy you got this opportunity! Your adopted parents are amazing people as well! They are definitely your true family!

I'm so sorry to offend anyone but I think his birth parents are really cruel. I understand they had financial problems but they left Daniel behind because the other twin was healthy. Most parents usually keep all kids because they love them so much but his birth family was just rude.
@DoubleKnotts
@DoubleKnotts 10 лет назад
From what I interpreted, they _had_ to give him up because his health couldn't be cared for with the money they had, and that he would be taken care of by an adopted family.
@crazymnky99
@crazymnky99 10 лет назад
but if they were poor wouldnt it be better to give away the unhealthy child so he could be treated properly instead of getting crappy medication and treatment. i mean i understand that what they did was a little wrong but he could have died if they hadnt given him up.
@vrynnie
@vrynnie 10 лет назад
"had financial problems" is really understating it. both of them were born premature and the father was informed that his insurance or the money they had could only cover for one baby to receive proper care. what could the dad do? if he had kept both then he still had to choose which baby would receive the treatments and one baby would suffer the health risks that come with being born premature. putting him up for adoption would be the best option because then the adoption center would take over any medical bills for the baby and both would receive proper care. how nice that you can sit back and judge people without actually fully understanding the situation his parents were in. and korea is a different country too. the system could work differently that it would have been difficult to keep both no matter what.

I love how authentic this feels! I would've otherwise thought that they edited the DNA test results email to align with the meet-up.

I am a black/African American. I would love to adopt in Korea or any Asian country. However, I know that they don't let blacks adopt. I am sad about that.

The title says, "Meeting my Biological Parents"... where are the biological parents in this video?

This documentary was definitely a good idea. You are so brave and fearless. Please don't feel bad about sharing your story. You never know who you have encouraged out there. And whose mind you have changed about adoption. In the African and Asian culture it's a bit taboo to adopt. But this documentary is shedding a good light. Keep up the good work.

The Korean adoptee camp i think maybe inspired the movie Seoul searching! Really enjoyable movie about teens all around the world coming back to find out who they are, where they come from, and the emotional journey of meeting your biological parents for the first time.

I didn't see in here nor in the next video Dan's actual meetup with his biological parents. Am I just blind or what?

This series made me so emotional. I am an adopted 14 year old girl from China. So basically I am the affect of the one child policy. I will never find my parents, I took a DNA test, and I still have this gap inside that I can not fill. I love my family but I feel like something is missing. Does anyone have any advice for how to cope with that?

Please don't feel guilty, because you're doing something that is impossible for some of us other adoptees who don't have any way to connect with their family, and therefore giving us an amazing opportunity to experience something that we've always wanted to, but will probably never get a chance to ^^

I like this series because I was also adopted from Asia and I can understand his emotions. (However, sadly I haven't met my birth parents or foster parents.)

I have identical twin boys and I raised my 6 children alone. My oldest was 11 at the time, then the next was a boy was 7 and a girl 6 and a boy 4 and twins that were 6 weeks old. Their dad took of with a 19 year old girl. I went back to college. It was very difficult to raise 6 children. But, I felt like, I gave birth to them and I was responsible for raising them.
