My favorite story of Yrvind was his sailing the Atlantic in his small boat Amfibie Bris from France to Newfoundland, getting there and preparing to go back when the Canadians confiscated his boat claiming it was too small to handle the Atlantic, and his subsequent stealing of his boat back from the authorities, putting it on a U-haul truck and driving to the US to sail from there. Brilliant.
@@bdmenne you think it was bad then. Since Covid this whole country is gone to shit... not allowed to travel out of your province without checking in. And giving A doctor the power of authority in almost every province... Poor sven would have been turned away at the wharf if it happened today.
Sven Yrvind is an amazing man! His trip to the United States in a boat named Maja with a 19 y/o (Captain Thomas) as a mentor is truly an inspirational story. They need to make a movie about it. The kid returned to Sweden single handed as the youngest sailor to cross the Atlantic. Sam I’m jealous you were able to meet him in person. Checkout his website for more good stories. Teddy
@@werock1998 Sam is one of my heroes. I've been dealing with Crohn's disease since my teens and when I see all Sam's been through and how much he's accomplished I'm nothing short of amazed and in awe.
That guy is absolutely amazing! He is living a life most of us don't have the balls to even begin. If I had the means I would definitely donate for his next boat build. I hope someone sees this and helps his dream come true.
Now I know what Santa Claus does in the off-season. Trades his sleigh for a sailboat. Makes perfect sense. On a separate note, I really, really, really admire these two.
Great to see 2 legends of sailing in the same room! love the handle idea, we're gonna give it a go. All the best and good luck to Yrvind on his next adventure
"If I Had A Hammer" is a Pete Seeger tune.Pete Seeger was also known as one of the Weavers. Scary to me that I remember that far back! Hello to Mr.Yrvind. That is a tuff one to pronounce! P.S. Hopefully we will be able to talk about the next boat we plan to build at the young age of 82!!!
"Hopefully we will be able to talk about the next boat we plan to build at the young age of 82!" Yes to this! May we all stay that curious for half as long.
I've been watching Yrvind building his new boat since the beginning. Seeing your video of his previous boat, explains a lot of his ideas. Now I can see what he has in mind for this new boat. Thanks!
Extremely rare to find someone who really dispenses creature conforts that we humans grown so used to. 100% practical. Hardcore is the word. Cheers Sam, great video
Look at the ports. From inside you can see this is a three inch thick deck/cabin. Not quite bullet proof but the boat will survive longer than the occupant. This is some impressive engineering for northern latitudes. Would not want to be in it in the subtropics and tropics, but for what he wants, very impressive.
He was invited as a speaker to my work some 10-15 years ago, I had honestly forgotten about him since then, so stumbling over videos of him here on youtube seeing that he's still doing these "crazy" builds for long blue water sailing is awesome. Do what you love Sven, keep sailing. One day I hope to do the same!
This ranks as one of your best videos. The guy is amazing and I had no knowledge of him prior to the video. It rekindled my interest in a hobby I had many years ago- building small wood canoes.
This channel is one of the great hidden gems on youtube. It is an incredibly intimate look into the rarely seen world of solo sailing. A collection of a hundred small details that show off how to pull off big adventures. Keep it up Sam.
This episode was cool. Sam got to meet his idol, the legend Sven Yrvind and I, got to watch two legends talk about something they love. Love from Ireland, safe winds men!
I remember reading about Sven from the late seventies and eighties when he was sailing with a very attractive young woman. Sven always seemed just s interesting as his boats. I hope he gets to build another. Setting off on another voyage at 82 is remarkable. 😎👍
Sven Yrvind grow up in my home town Gothenburg and spent many years on the island Brännö. He is also a legend in Sweden, and i am myself an admirer of him and all his energy. His boats are extreme but there is a lot to learn from Sven. He has written some books from his many adventures, and i do recommend them. Glad you met this guy on your journey. Have only seen Sven once on the boat show in Gothenburg, which takes place in Jan-feb every year, but due to Corona we missed a few. Good luch on your journey. /MM
Thank you Sam for reintroducing me to Sven. I had been a fan of his some years ago but I lost focus on him. I hope you are both well and keeping safe. Fair Winds!
Enjoyed the vid Sam...the old man has lots of experience and I feel you have & will continue to prosper. You're carrying his tradition forward...I always knew you were a 'Viking' ~
This is a amazing interwiew, and an amazing boat. Yrvind must have no issues with claustrofobia. The idea that one cannot stand up would be a real issue for me. Also all of those sharp contraptions lining the walls and ceiling I would think one might really hit their head on in rough seas. It seems Yrvid has somehow mastered that problem. I have the highest respect for anyone, much more a man of his age living his dream.
82 years old and has an island named after him in Antarctica. The man is a legend. What a great video. Thank you! And so happy you got to spend time learning from him!
I’m so clueless as to how I’ve found your channel. But damn it the RU-vid algorithm did me well. Subbed. And man what a lovely human, Sven. You can tell he’s going to sail till he can’t, and when he can’t? He’s likely dead. What a wonderful soul. Guy is more brilliant than I’ll ever be.
That was a cool interview Sam I will have to check out more of his videos I always thought I would want a bigger boat to travel to the Philippines maybe one not so large would be just as good that guy is very intelligent and a good boat builder it seems stay safe Sam God bless you watching from Roseville California USA Ray Garrett.
Absolute legend, he helped me with my school project about vikings. My mum Angie Groves put him up on the Isle of Wight when he was was circum navigating ✌️❣️
Sailing around Cape Horn is crazy in a large vessel. Doing it in a bathtub with a bandana sized sail is insane. This man is the progeny of Vikings for sure. Much respect.
@@MerkGBG He is from Gothenburg, so yes its a common thing for them to say in swedish. Im from Stockholm, i probably use filler words, cant think of what the hell it could be right now though. :D
Sven Yrvind is my hero too! We are both from Gothenburg, West Coast of Sweden. But he is 30 years older and inspired me a lot when i was young. The only books I read then was his books, but his name was S Lundin back then and I still have them all. At last, HE´S JUST FINISHED HIS NEW BUILD AS OF MARCH 2023.
I was reading about him, from sailing magazines, since 1984. He is a SAILING GURU. He built his evvery single boat. Just amazing. How likey you are, you had a chance to meet him.
"Who should I run into? Sven Ooveren" "Yvrind" "Yvern" Yvrind" "I'll get it. We're going to hang out. We'll become friends." Cracked me up!! 😁. The look of sheer joy is infectious.
That was very cool and I bet you learned a lot from him. Amazing what he has accomplished and he truly is an absolute Legend. Maybe someday people will say the same of you young man, very well done...
Coolest ever Sam!!! You sailing across the Atlantic Man!!! You Did it Sam! You met yours and my Hero! You woke me up Sam when I saw you take off to Hawaii! I’m so proud of what I’ve seen you do in such a short time! Fixing up my Giant 35 footer now and hope you run into people with great attitudes like your Sam! Great Job putting him in such a great light! Well Done!
Wow. That was fascinating. One does not often get the opportunity to hear legends speaking live, sharing knowledge, and taking questions. Save this video for the archive, Sam. At 82, Sven might not have too many more.
It was nice to see you meet someone that has helped inspire your journeys. Your adventures are inspirational as well. Your talents as a sailor, narrator, and videographer give us that are uninitiated to the sailing world a glimpse of the beauty and freedom sailing offers. I just bought my first sailboat this week and have my first lesson this weekend. I hope to become proficient enough to leave the lakes behind and sail the blue waters and see the world.
Totally stoked to learn of and ‘meet’ Sven Yrvind. All thanks to your channel, Sam. Can hardly wait to follow your next nautical adventure, but first some follow up on the amazing, dazzling spectacular soul, Sven Yrvind. Haw’aa. Safe travels 🙏🏼💫
Hey Sam! I've been in admiration of Sven for many years too. The other small boat sailor I'm quite into is Roger Taylor, and his boats Ming Ming and Ming Ming 2. He is also an eloquent writer. If you haven't heard of him, check him out, I think you'll dig his books, boats and style! Thanks for the episodes, you did a great job on your re-fit!
Omg yesss! I seen he left on his channel but didnt know he had landed somewhere yet! This is amazing so glad you met him an know who he is! Amazing people the both of ya!
