In this episode I am learning more about life in a traditional South African Xhosa village: Bulungula, on South Africa's Wild Coast. I am meeting the headman, a local healer and learn more about how they build there houses and the rules that apply in the kitchen!

I hope you like this mini series of videos that I made in this Xhosa village! ❤️ For me, it was a great place to film something different than normal and dive a bit more into local culture rather than just passing through. There are a couple of more episodes coming about the people and their lives here, and after, I will hop on Savannah again and continue the ride through South Africa! 🙌🇿🇦

We love this and the last episode in Xhosa village. It allows us to peek into their life through you. Part of the beauty of travels is learning other cultures. Not just simply passing thru. Thabisa and the kids are wonderful and having so much fun! Trevor Noah would be proud... 😁

Good on you Noraly. Of course you should remain true to the essentials of your motorcycle adventure blog but you are right to dwell occasionally on the specifics of local culture. You do it better than any other bikers and it gives us insight into cultures we would otherwise overlook. When are you going to apply to be United Nations Secretary General?

"local culture vs just passing through" reminds me of the enlightenment about hiking that happened to me after having children: they wanted to slow down and look at everything, whereas I previously had been "peak bagging", hiking fast and viewing the final summit as the goal. The children's method made more lasting memories, even when I didn't make it to the top.

Xhosa village seems to be well organized! The local authority "the headman" takes care of the everyday problems incl. small crimes. He's the respected and wise "advisor" of the community and knows his people. I like that and it makes a lot of sense. The Xhosa roundhouse has two sides... One side for the women, the other side for the men. How wise to separate the 2 bickering sides... to maintain piece in the roundhouse... 👍Lol The roundhouse interior is simple but tidy. You don't need more than that really. Great vid noraly!

Round houses are structurally stronger since they don't have any joints which are normally the weak points, better resisting to the wind and earthquake. The same goes for Mongul yurts but the are basically round tents since they move all the time. She is so cool and open minded for someone who lives in a small village. The men have such a lazy and happy lives. Over all, a relax place to live for everyone. Such an informing video. We would never get exposed to this kind of things when we travel as tourists. Noraly I have been on holiday at the wild coast resort so many times and I we used to rent horses to ride on the beach. I have seen those rondawels so many times in the distance, but shamefully have never visited the tribe, nor seen the place close up. I guarantee you have experienced more of these villagers, and wonderful people, than most South African born "whites" that live a stones throw away from their village. I found your channel about a week ago, and i have been binging the whole series. (almost at the end of season 2). i would like to say i really admire what you are doing, and i would like to commend you on the sheer amount of work you put in your videos. Second to that i would say that i think people underestimate the amount of planning and preparing it takes to go on those big journeys and think you should get some recognition for that. I myself just started my motor cycle license lessons and you inspire me even more to succeed in that. As fellow dutchy i would like to say i am proud of you and never stop doing what you love.

Definitely one of my favourite episodes so far ❤️ It shows something very important - that perspective is everything, and we should understand that we're not always right. Some may look at Xhosa as primitive people - how they live, their belief system and the "strange" customs they have. When you told them about how houses are crammed together due to lack of space in the Netherlands, the headman looked like he thought WE were crazy. Imagine if you had told him you would need to work 45 hour weeks and eat food from a tin for the next 35 years to afford one. We walk around listening to music beamed to us from the sky on our smart phones - Thabisa's singing, her smile and the joy it brought her instantly had me beaming from ear to ear as well. It touched me far more than any of the latest pop stars ever could, and I couldn't even understand what she was saying. We like to stand on the outside and judge people who are different from ourselves, but they show a spiritual fulfilment and a happiness for life that a lot of us lost a long time ago. Maybe we're the crazy, primitive ones? Thank you for sharing this with us ❤️

I realize your comment was "romantically philosophical", but purely from a factual basis, it's important to remember that South Africa has been an industrial state for roughly 150 years. The traditional "pure isolated peasant" class, that some seem to envisage, doesn't really exist in SA. The people you see in villages are not somehow ignorant of what you described: South Africa is a 70% urban country. Many people you see in those villages shop in towns or even live and work at times in South Africa's metropolitan areas: modern cities of millions of people, or have family that lives there. You spoke of music "beamed from the sky": Notice several people in the video have phones/smartphones. It is likely that the very headman you see may have been working in the urban economy a few years earlier, so it's not as if he wouldn't know what crammed neighbourhoods look like. So I doubt he would be surprised. In fact, I suspect he asked the question about whether her home has round houses for the sake of making conversation, to which he kind of already probably knew the answer.
@andrewlim3842
@andrewlim3842 3 года назад
@@baerd4102 Please don't misunderstand my comment, I don't for one second believe that they're a long lost tribe isolated from the rest of the "developed" world. They use smart phones, wear clothes branded with english writing and Noraly was clearly able to contact them prior to her arrival. I'm talking about the way they choose to live. My comment isn't about a purity based on ignorance, my comment is about understanding the perspective of others and a willingness to give validity to people who don't conform to how we think they should live. Thank you for taking the time to reply and giving me a different view.

I, and the other viewers, have gained a little insight into a culture we otherwise would not have seen. Thank you. For me, it is traveling to gain insight into the way of life of others and be confronted with the fact that you can live well in a different way than we do in Europe. Not sure how the connection was made, but have much enjoyed the daily walks of this fascinating village and its inhabitants. Thank you.

Its refreshing to see a whole community of people and not one person looking down at their mobile phone, or tapping away on the ipad posting on social media about how bad their life is. No kids spending their childhood on video games.

Well, to be fair, the Headman hardly ever took his eyes off his phone.

The young mother spent much of her time looking at her phone. But you're right, they weren't a dominant feature as they are in other places.

I just wonder how they charge their phones in the village. It doesn't look like they have electricity there.

Am I correct if I say you added an extra component to your travel stories? Namely Human interest, more interaction between you and the people you meet along, and have an interesting story? It enriches your stories. Well done Noraly. Your followers like this very much if i read the comments well. Big thumbs up 👍👍

One of those small boys is a future Nelson Mandela. Lovely video, and much respect to Thabisa for bridging both cultures.
