Collin Butcher genuinely loved his son. He knew that by making his son apologize, his son would have rich memories and many experiences and lessons to last a lifetime. This was old school parenting at its best!

this is probably my most favorite scene for it's realness. 'there's more to the game than shooting, there's fundamentals and defense'. OLD SCHOOL RESPECT towards the end of the scene as well.

Man, that scene with the father making the son apologize for being disrespectful to the coach reminds me so much of my dad. That’s how my dad was. “There is only one type of discipline: perfect discipline.” --Patton

Rollin Butcher was a big man, he handled that whole group of locals by himself.

When taking back young Butcher, Hackman is able to convey Norman's strength, but also his understanding that he can give this boy who made a mistake another chance, just as he himself is getting another chance at this school.

I like how when Rollin comes into the gym, he casually pushes aside the other men, and then approaches Dale hat in hand to speak to him. He straightens out his son, and then kicks out the other men.. all without making a threat or even raising his voice.

Being a Hoosier who grew up on a farm in rural Indiana in the 50s and 60s I can tell those that have seen this movie you don't really have a clue how intense it really was! This movie is only a light version of how it really was. Basketball back then was the state religion and if a young man mouthed off to the coach it was like blasphemy! The fundamentals were ground into you not just by the coaches but in that old barn where the rusted hoop was put to use in the dead cold of winter, where you shot thousands of shots over and over again till you did it all night in your sleep. Your brothers and cousins and friends were even tougher on you than your coaches. In those days 100s of people would show up at a rural highschool game in the middle of a blizzard! It was a Spartan experience, those were the days!

lol...my first practice when I went out for my Jr. H.S. team was just like this...the coach put the chairs out and had us dribble through them, the stopped us and said now when you can learn to dribble like that with both hands while always looking forward we can start to really practice.
@stevefowler2112
@stevefowler2112 5 лет назад
Looks like my first practice in Jr. H.S. back in ''69/70 academic year. Coach put chairs out just like that and told us, okay I know you all think you are pretty good dribblers but to make this team you are going to have to get through these chairs in under 7 seconds with your off hand...about 95% of the team missed that mark for many practices but we all became good off hand dribblers pretty quickly...I ended up playing point guard...Good Times.

Now this is old school parenting. Nowadays, the father and mother would come rushing in threatening lawsuits and demanding that the coach apologize. Not my parents. They would have hauled me back to school to apologize just like this dad did. That's partly why our society is so messed up. Children are not held accountable for their actions.

+Katie Williams Katie interesting point about that final shot. The actor said on an interview with Dan Patrick that when they filmed the last shot the director told the crowd of extras to jump up and down whether he hits the shot or not. The actor said, "I hit it the first time".

Now don't you go wearing out that VHS!!! :) Bad joke, I know. But 4real, I swear, I still keep thinking about the NCAA Final Game with Butler, biggest underdog ever to make the Final (OK, maybe Villanova in 85?) and Duke and the last play of the game a dude from Butler tried a shot from his end of the court, one of those "Hail Mary" type shots, and just to think if it goes in.... (Yes Duke won but still)...
@MrDanty64
@MrDanty64 7 лет назад
Point I was making back there was that that team doing what they did, and that game, with that shot, was as close to a real life re-enactment of what we're seeing in Hoosiers (OK Yeah yeah yeah, I know, it could happen anywhere else...)

Strong left or off hand dribble can be obtained by constantly forcing yourself to dribble 75% with that hand until the pain goes away...it will take a year. A “pure shooter” is greatly help by shooting and practicing on an all season non lighted outside court that is smooth but not level, that is height regulation at the front of the rim to the bottom of the court but sloping gradually farther from the rim, one hour practice a day at dusk and a half hour shooting in the dark listening for only for the swish of the net.

Someone can tell my sweetheart that it's ok - she isn't at fault or nothing but perfect ! I don't need an explanation ! I'm not like regular folk and I understand ! All five guys on the floor functioning at one unit and becoming a team ! It's artwork ! I'll make it ! Make it a good one strap ! The lord I can feel his strength ! 🤣anyway my numbers plural - haven't changed - any time I'd be more than happy to help ! Just can't do anything with social media it's evil ! Every single time I go on there it causes me stress and new issues arise ! It upsets me and I can't live under those conditions ! It's not for me ! I don't need that negativity in my life ! Anyone wants to bypass that and figure things out - I'm in all in ! I'd be glad to do anything of the sort ! But going on that evil and disgusting social media isn't good for my mental health or my stress ! Plus nothing gets figured out or accomplished there anyway ! It's just drama and rumours and problems and provokes bad things and evil things - can't fight darkness with darkness - if it actually had a plan or a point - then maybe I'd subject myself to it and suck it up ! Deal with things - but there's absolutely nothing and no English no plan no communication just nothing ever - it's Nathan and just drama and causes more problems ! I hope you guys can understand that ! If I went right now and saw what ? My beautiful sweetheart ! That's it I can look at her in the photos offline ! I don't need that - she's always in my mind - so other than seeing her picture what exactly is the end game or the game plan ? That's what I've been saying there's never anything or explanation or reason or ideas or it's just circles and going round and round !

A mistake I made with my early teams as a coach was getting too close with the parents of my players, Norm shows here why it’s important to keep them at an arm’s length. I always tried to see the best in people, but so many parents live vicariously through their children that if you allow them too much access into the inner workings of the team all the sudden there’s a dozen satellite coaches who all start to believe they’re in charge instead of you. Set clear boundaries, make it clearly known who the boss is, and don’t second guess yourself. Sometimes you’ll run into a situation where the administration or people above you don’t necessarily have your back, but strong leadership is predicted around staying true to your convictions and putting the well-being of others before yourself.

I know we see one player being brought back to apologise, but I still would have liked to have seen the deleted scene where Buddy and Coach Dale settle up. Buddy is the most self-confident of the players and his attitude here is so disrespectful. That makes me wonder exactly how Coach handles him in the missing scene. It's a very abrupt re-appearance later, with no indication of what understanding there is between Buddy, Coach and the other players. The only pay-off is Buddy's "Let's win for coach, who got us here."
