Exactly! The driving/flying sections, the epic sprite-scaling and the awesome music blew my mind in 1993. I rarely played the platform sections, which were basically the MegaDrive game bolted on.
I still have this game in my closet. This game is what convinced me to buy a Sega CD. And I'm glad I did to this day, because that system has my favorite RPG series of all time (Lunar).
Holy Shit brother yes Lunar for Sega CD is one of my all time favorite games too, also gotta say that the Complete Version for PlayStation was actually worse in my opinion, I love the original so much more, the music in that game too OMG, especially Ghaleon's and especially when shit goes down like when he kills Quark, rather than caging him in that "Complete" version which I hated when that happens in that version, it ruins the power and emotion of that scene, anyway thanks for making my day with that reference, another great rpg not too well known I don't think that I loved was "VAY"
@blue red Yep...no way to play it directly since my setup only supports HDMI and displayport (no support for analog video or audio). But I did rip the disk and it's super easy to play on an emulator.
I love this game. It was so hard as a kid, but I managed to beat it a few times with some patience. Still own it and my SEGA CD.. might have to fire it up again. Side note: Imagine ALL SEGA CD titles had been of this caliber? The Genesis really could have had something special down the line if the CD had been a bit cheaper and every title was as good as this or Sonic CD. Way ahead of it's time.
For sure man I was like 8 years old when it came out i was amazed playing it why I had to check it out on RU-vid cause it was on my mind brought back some good memories
Sonic CD, Formula 1 Beyond the Limit, Silpheed, Snatcher, Heart of the Alien... To be quite honest, about the games that "Used the Sega CD properly" and were good... most of the cases, what made they really good was the use of the extra raw power the Sega CD had, and not the CD storage. Cut the cutscenes and CD soundtrack and all most those games could still fit a cartridge. Thing is, having like, I dunno, 64mbs for a home game at that time would be a dream, you could have storage for a lot of stuff. 600 mbs was overkill. Unless you were doing full motion video games (which 9 in 10 were crap), you really didn't have use for so much storage. You could add flavour like FMV cutscenes or spoken dialogue but none of this really made a game *good*.
You know, something I appreciate about this game is that they didn't use fmv for the cutscenes, but instead used sprites. I wish more Sega CD games did that!
The Batskiboat levels were pretty tough on this one, took some serious precision, but sure was fun! Obviously all efforts went into the driving stages and new music for SEGA CD ver, as the platform stages were from the Genesis cart. Those stages aren't bad, though a very "artsy" interpretation of Batman Returns XD. Music was awesome, some tracks really stand out, but not too Batsy :D ... SNES was very close/true to the movie and had the Danny Elfman music, but nowhere near the depth of gameplay of this one.
What a game this was!! Totally underrated in it's time, the variety of game play as each level progressed was just amazing and in my humble opinion was streets ahead of all the other games that came out during the early 90's
You handled that game like a boss. I sucked at the side scrolling stages and only played the driving portions as a kid. I never got past the sewer level. Masterfully done, mang.
What was so good about the Sega CD version of "Batman Returns" was the kick ass soundtrack. Used to play/listen to this all the time back in day. *McGrin*
When this game came out, it had the same graphical impact as Arkham had when it was released years later. On the old CRT TV's this was simply stunning as the blending was "better" than the ultra high resolution we can see today. Soundtrack was tied for second with Sonic CD only below Hook (its John Williams, c'mon). SEGA CD still my favorite game system of all time. The leap in sound and introducing video (although grainy) and some 3D scaling was hypnotic and addicting for 14 year old me. There is no system I have spent more time on than SEGA CD because of games like this.
This took so long but I finally just beat this game. That first driving scene is intense with the stupid firemen on the sides and that Jet Ski boat level was also intense!
Heard that the newest Arkham instalment's going to have the Batmobile in it. If we're going to be using it, I say that some of the music from this game should at least be in it!
I still like the driving levels, and the platform levels aren't as bad as people say. Some elements (like the cityscape or the buildings etc) show that the designers used actual reference from the film's design. Nothing groundbreaking except the scaling effect, but Sega put together a pretty nice game (unlike, say, Acclaim with Batman Forever).
The music sounds way ahead of its time, like from something released a decade later. It's cool how you can alternate between driving the batmobile and playing batman.
It's that this version of the Sega CD of this game Batman Returns does got no Invincibility game genie for the full game especially for the Batmoblie and the Batskiboat or for Batman.
No, this is way beyond Road Rash, as it used hardware sprite scaling (Road Rash used redrawn sprites). The road is a textured scaling plane, while the sprites are all scaled and rotated. Whereas other Mega-CD games which used the sprite scaling had a limited colour palette, Batman Returns doubled it. It baffles me Sega never ported Galaxy Force, Space Harrier, etc, to Mega-CD.
One of the few games that took advantage of the Sega CD's power. Using the extra cpu and scaling chips in some ways it could scale sprites even better than the 3do.Few games even used the Cd's extra chips just for storage and sound letting Genesis run the game. While this games decant its a mindless racing game.A small glimpse of what could have been. Sega CD was wasted potential it mainly just received ports or lazy fmv games.
Spanish/español. Sega que hiciste repetir batman returns para mega CD solo poner niveles del batmobil sin mejorar nada mas English/ ingles. Sega that you did repeat batman returns for mega CD only put batmobil levels without improving anything else.
If there's one thing this game is known for besides showing off the Sega CD's scaling capabilities, and having an awesome soundtrack, it was the notoriously frustrating difficulty.
Despite what was said, I think it is very worth it to get a Sega CD. The Sega CD had a lot of good games. There are several youtube videos on this & you have a Sega Genesis by default plus you can get a Sega 32X for a little more. I have the whole set up (Sega Genesis/Sega CD/32X) and it is a great system to have. I also have an Xbox 360 & Wii but there is something about the old Sega games that make them fun to play. Just make sure you get all the cables and power cords.
+Eien no Yami That was only in the first movie. In the second movie the browning machineguns weren't even shown. He had some kind of disc launcher he used to take out people in Batman Returns.
Exactly, my opinion. And I still do have my Sega CD. "Out of this World" & "Heart of the Alien" as well as "Wing Commander" was some of my favorite Sega CD Games. Hell, I even had "Night Trap". Damn, I'm old now, Ha Ha.
loved it, sick sound track at the time, i made loads of strange game music tapes as a kid, this music was included, ridge racer, wipe-out and all sorts, I thought they were cool back then, as i did curtains for a hair cut. anyway my favorite level was the sewer one in the bat boat ...SICK
If more developers had focused on using the sprite scaling and rotation instead of mucking about with FMV nonsense, the Mega-CD could have realised its full potential. Sega were mad not to have ported Space Harrier, Outrun, Galaxy Force, etc to the Mega-CD.
From what i remember i barely played this because i found it difficult. Even though the Mega/Sega CD flopped it did have some great games at least, one being Final Fight CD which was a great game and had amazing music, never managed to beat that either as i still think it's a damn hard game even today.
This was a really, really badly written game, mechanics and gameplay wise, but (especially for the time) it was a gorgeous treat in graphics and music, and especially to this day for the latter, if I could buy this soundtrack on CD or find it on Spotify I would.
A great game indeed like it's Sega counterpart and the soundtrack is great in its own right. But as many have said, it's unfitting and sounds more like a compilation of great 90's music.
Someone needs to rip this game and replace its audio with that from that movies. That would be amazing. Someone did it with that Sega CD Hook game and its great.
I think there are a few tracks out of place, like the driving sequence at the 30 minute mark for example. But a lot of the other tracks seem to fit into the game fairly well.
The options menu let you select just driving, just platforms, or both. I always disabled the platform side and just played it as a driving game. Loved this one for that! :)
God, that music...I know Sega desperately wanted to show off the better sound quality of the Sega CD, but _couldn't they have given us something a little more Batman-like?_
The non-driving parts seems to be just the original Sega Mega Drive version of the game, was the Mega Drive version meant to be this but couldn't be due to lack of processing power?
I remember wanting to get the Sega Mega CD so bad at the time but could not afford it being a poor college student at the time. Batman Returns seems like a cool game.
