You are right, Paul. That was a brain as Offal is all the organ meats, and the internal organs. Cooked right, they can be delicious, and usually very cheap. People ate them a lot during the depression.

My guess for the stinky one would be that they added putrescine - a chemical you can find in rotting meat. By the way a smell that cats find extremely yummy.
