I like to start the game with Storm Eagle, Flam Mammoth, then Chill Penguin. I like playing a few levels without Dr Light upgrades. Then I just back track for the upgrades.
Great walkthrough! I like to use the "ice shotgun" at the beginning of the "Boomer Kawanger" stage to take out those shield-mace guys at 14:20. The ice will bounce off the walls behind and take them out easy.
Caleb Hart holds a world record 100% speed run of this game (35:53). Here are some of his strategies: 3:46 - Intro stage - Run to the right, jumping over enemies, shooting or taking damage along the way to get past enemies. Do not stop until you get behind the helicopter Bee Blades, in which case you turn, shoot them down, then keep going right. Get to Vile, with low health, so that the fight ends when he hits you once. 6:15 - Chill Penguin - Get dash boots, for the rest of the game you need to dash and jump for max speed. Always. Avoid combat by jumping over enemies or shooting them without stopping. Beat Penguin. 15:06 - Boomer Kuwanger - You can get the heart tank with dash wall jumps only, but your angle has to be perfect. You also need to do it first try for a world record. Beat Boomer with half-charge shots. 18:16 - Storm Eagle - As Aqualung showed in this guide, but quick. You must beat Eagle before he goes into his dive animations. It's a lottery. He could do it at anytime. 19:49 - Flame Mammoth - As Aqualung showed in this guide, but you must get the buster upgrade, first try, plus all other upgrades. Beat Mammoth with the wind gun. 16:02 - Sting Chameleon - Destroy the green miniboss at 16:20 using the boomerang gun, before the miniboss can jump. It's another lottery. You can't use all the ammo, you need some leftover for the boss. Get the heart tank and dashjump past everything, without getting into the armored suits. Beat Chameleon with the boomerang gun. 22:15 - Penguin Revisit - Get the heart tank, eject from the stage. 8:09 - Spark Mandrill - Get all powerups, beating the mid-boss water bubble with the wind gun, beating Spark with the ice gun. It's possible to damage Spark twice with the ice gun in between his frozen animations. 10:17 - Armored Armadillo - Get the sub tank and heart, abusing the Chameleon camo to bypass the enemies. Beat the boss with the spark gun. 11:58 - Launch Octopus - Beat the sub suckers and blowers with your Chameleon sting, fired rapidly at point blank. You need to get all the powerups on this stage. For the ship at 13:04, you need to perform a tricky maneuver. Fully charge the wind gun, move yourself under the ship, where you think the blue target is, then fire. The vertical tornado should make the ship explode. You need to use the same strategy for the Sea Dragon, but position the vertical tornado on it's head. The second shouldn't even be on screen when you do this. Beat Octo with the rolling shield gun. Octo must be defeated before using it's vortex so again, it's another lottery. Your time should be ~ 23 minutes at this point. 22:44 - Armored Armadillo Revisited - Get the hadoken. Fast. Eject from the stage. In a world record speed run, you need to master the hadoken as it kills everything with one shot. You need full health to use it. The command is down, downforward, forward and fire. Exactly like Ryu's hadoken in Street Fighter. 23:58 - Sigma's Stage - The fastest way into the tower is to begin jumping onto the first three green flying platforms, then climb the mountain on the right the rest of the way up. Once in, take damage to get past the enemies and deliberately get damaged down to just less than 1/4 health. If you move fast enough, instant skipping the dialogue boxes by holding start, you can bypass the dialogue with Vile. Get hit to start the real fight with him. Shoot Vile with the hadoken to destroy him instantly, after you get the energy recover. 25:40 - Oh yeah, you're using the Chameleon camo to get past that shit, until you get to Boomer. Hadoken him. 26:54 - Oh yeah, you're using the Chameleon camo to get past that shit, until you get to the Spider. Hadoken it. 28:26 - Oh yeah, you're using the Chameleon camo to get past that shit, until you get to Chill Penguin. Hadoken him. 28:46 - Skip the suits and just use the camo to get past that shit. If you go fast enough, you'll drain very little until you get to Storm Eagle. Hadoken him. 29:08 - Oh yeah, you're using the Chameleon camo to get past that shit, until you get to the face boss. You need the blue eye to come after you so you can hadoken it, then use the Chameleon gun to hit the red orb and nose. 30:03 - There's a skip for this boss. You need to fully charge an ice sled, then have it push your butt into the door while up close. It might not work. It's a lottery. If it works, you skip the Armadillo boss and proceed to use the fire gun to rush to Chameleon's room. You cannot take any damage on the way there. 30:21 - Chameleon Rematch - Without taking any damage, you need to fully charge an ice sled, fire it into a wall at the same height as Chameleon, jump on it and hadoken him. It's a crap shoot. Good luck. 30:29 - Spark Rematch - Use what barely available camo you have to get to this boss, hit him once with the ice gun to stun him and hadoken him. Again, you can't have taken any damage up to and including this point. 30:31 - Use fully charged spark shots and the wind gun to reach Octo boss. Use the buster to deflect his shot and hadoken him afterward. 30:39 - Camo. Flame Mammoth. Hadoken. 30:56 - Main Boss - Jump on his bottom jaw, wait for it... Hadoken. 30:09 - Sigma's Dog - Hadoken 30:25 - Sigma w Lightsaber - Hadoken 32:58 - Sigma Final - Wall jump into the top left area, standing on the platform once in a while, firing the rolling shield gun at Sigma's face. It's possible to stay on the platform's edge so its lightning doesn't hit you. You can also time your jumps so that you dodge the lightning while firing a rolling shield on Sigma. For casuals, stay cramped in the top left corner and hold left before firing the rolling shield. Awesome review Aqualung! See you next time.
There are people to this day that still refer to Mega Man X as Mega Man 10, LOL. At the time of its release, I honestly thought it was Mega Man 10 to a certain degree due to the fact there were 6 Mega Man games on the NES and 4 of them on the Game Boy.
munsi0121 Oh, right. I always forget about Mega Man 5 on the Game Boy. And yes, I know there was a Mega Man game released on the Game Gear. If I'm not mistaken, it was published by US Gold, am I right?
Your review is certainly a lot better than Egoraptor's Sequelitis video of Mega Man 1/Mega Man X. A good way to wait out for something I'm doing of great importance today.
First off great job on this one because I could NEVER beat the damn game! I could get to the platforms in the first sigma level and then I rage quit! One thing I noticed now that I never noticed before was that when you get the Fireball Dr. Light has a Ryu Costume in the holo. I'm actually surprised you didn't mention that...then again its NOT that big a deal so *shrugs* Good job though
A more efficient order to kill bosses to cut down on backtracking is 1)chill penguin 2)storm eagle 3)flame mammoth 4)spark mandrill 5)armored armadillo 6)launch octopus 7)boomer kuwanger 8)sting chameleon Try it out sometime
At 25:39, if you do a direct dash at the first spring and keep up the same speed, it will bounce you through the entire gauntlet here. You might have to take out the Sniper/Mace Joe first.
Back when I played this game, when fighting against Launch Octopus, I always used Storm Tornado against him. Sure it isn't the weakness but it deals decent damage as well getting those annoying projectiles out of the way.
finally got around to doing a walkthrough of one of the MMX series games i see, and it was just as awesome as i knew it would be, thanks Aqua. ;) any thoughts on possible walkthrough's for the sequels?
I never beat this game sadly. I lacked net access and never figured out the final form's weakness. I was so dead set on just surviving and fighting Sigma I mostly forgot about using my weapons. I remember sitting in the living room on our big tv (A mammoth CRT) and having my mom and big brother yell at me when it was time to use an e-tank. I would focus more on Sigma and let myself get "in the zone" dodging him while they watched my health for me. I've still never beat this one. But that's mostly due to not having the time.
A- huh? Guess the minus was possibly due to the fact that while X was a good start-off to the series...it seems to take itself a bit too seriously as opposed to the campy fun of the original Mega Man series. This was particularly true in later installments in the X series where you were like...Jesus! XD
Auchrain I found out about it from Egoraptor's Sequilitus review of MegaMan and MegaMan X. If you haven't seen it, you should check it out. Its real funny and might have you seeing the series in an interesting new light of how and why its all put together and was successful in the way it was.
You can also cut off launch octopus tentacles, he also didn't mention the stage changes like killing launch octopus makes water appear in sting chameleons level or killing storm eagle will stop the Lightning sparks in spark mandrills stage
Skyline Fever I always thought Sigma's likeness was lifted from Street Fighter's Sagat, and I always envisioned Mega Man X and Zero as robotic versions of Ryu and Ken.
