In my head, this is what X: Corrupted music sounds like. X3 OST's issue is not bad composition, never has been. It's unfortunate overuse of specific samples in comparison to the previous two games. The compositions are great. Now combine ingenious use of samples with good composition, and you get my personal best SNES MMX soundtrack: X2 :)
This really illustrates something I've always kind of thought. Mega Man X3's soundtrack gets a lot of flack, but I don't think it's much deserved because composition-wise it's great, but the X3 soundfont is too harsh
The main issue with them outside of the soundfont is that a lot of the themes feel too short, a lot of them feel like they could have used at least one more sequence. However, that's hardly an issue unique to MMX3.
No, most of the compositions suck too. The problem is they're so flat and repetitive, either hitting the same note repeatedly or switching between the same 2 notes. Listen to Armored Armadillo and then Tunnel Rhino. X1's soundtrack is so much more lively, fluctuating between way more than 2 notes.
GRAVITY BEETBOOD This song goes so hard. With the X1 soundfont, it kind of sounds like it would fit as a battle theme from Breath of Fire (of course, since they use the same soundfont, but still). Thanks for this.
Fascinating. This sounds SO much better than the original. Makes me wonder why Capcom changed the soundfonts between SNES games. I also played MMX4 for the first time recently and was shocked at how the music in that game takes such a radical departure from X-X3 music. I was in utter disbelief.
