I remember watching this review months ago when some of my friends were telling me how awful X6 was, but back then I thought it looked mediocre at worst. Then I finally played it myself on the X Legacy Collection and... you weren’t kidding. The egregious level design, enemy placement, rescuable reploids, nightmare effects, heck, just about everything constantly pissed me off. I was just relieved I managed to finish it. Then a couple weeks ago, I started looking back on X6 and assumed it couldn’t be as frustrating as I remembered. Surely, it’d be more fun on a second playthrough, right? I replayed it and despite being fully aware of what I was doing, my opinion of the game had somehow dropped even lower than before. It’s not like the game is genuinely challenging. In fact, it’s so easy to break the game’s “difficulty” that it becomes mind-numbingly pathetic for the most part. I won’t deny X6 has some redeeming factors like the music, armor sets, or the lore (plus at least the core gameplay is the same as X4/X5), and I certainly don’t have anything against fans that are able to get enjoyment out of it or call it a great game. But as for me, X6 is an inconsistent mess that’s either incredibly annoying or an absolute borefest.

I beat it in Xtreme. This is all I have to say: I recall nothing about it except how long I spent on the Gate fight. That part was so insane that it drowned out all memories of the rest of the game.

My biggest annoyance is the fact that the reploids permanently die even if you restart the level making you permanently loose an upgrade ability.

Amazing that the MMX collection is split into the first 4 games and the latter 4 games in a separate retail release so that you can quite easily avoid the crappy half of the X series.

the blaze heatnix stage took me over 2 HOURS to complete. whoever thought of fighting the same miniboss 5 times in a row with the 4th encounter leaving very little room for error and the fleas from the nightmare effect slowly widdling you down needs a kick in the balls as thats what they did to us. the soundtrack was rockin but after 2 HOURS of being triggered i have developed some sort of PTSD when ever i hear it. feelsbadman

The reason why Mega man x 6 was a disaster was because it was only made to make a few more bucks out of the ps1 before being replaced by the ps2 in doing so being rushed beyond belief. So there you go… Capcom didn’t even try with this game, but X7 doesn’t have any excuses

This is the game equivalent of that AVGN joke of the pit with lava on top of the spikes, with fire-sharks swimming in it, spikes coming from the sides, ready to close in and squash you while stabbing at the same time, some laser cannons and upside-down volcanoes and start the game falling down the pit.

People just don't make videos like this anymore, and that even held true back when this was made. The sheer hatred he has for this game is genuinely hilarious. I've fallen off from watching J's content in recent years thanks to my shifting tastes, but I love coming back to this review every so often.

Funnily enough, I ragequit on Metal Shark Player. That crushing ceiling section really pissed me off. I genuinely thought it was impossible.

One of the most vivid memory of my childhood is of the sudden realization I had, back then, that I had to re-do high max as falcon because of the fucking intentional unbeatable-as-shadow-armor gap you have by the next section of the map. I tried replaying it as of late, on an emulator (with save states, I might add, which I gladly abused) with hopes that - "oh my, perhaps I've misjudged mx6" - yeah, I haven't. Game is ASS with all the capitals available. I agree with almost everything that you've compiled here. Amazing donuts. Top quality unavoidable damage on wolfang stage to nightmare illusions (huge damage - as a matter of fact). Man, fuck mx6. I just can't.

I have only 3 positive things to say about this game. The music is great, Zero's new sprites are awesome, and it is NEVER boring

Mega Man X6 feels like one of these fan-made mods or ROM hacks which are really impressive at first glance but are nowhere near as well-made as the original game. The level design in X6 in particular seems like something out of a mod/hack, flashy and gimmicky yet pretty poor.

I seriously hate that lights out effect.

Even when I played this game for the first time back in 2006, I thought there was something "off" and cheap about it. The weird backgrounds, hokey stage design, shitty enemy placement, weird death traps, and the off-putting translations. I couldn't put my finger on it but the whole game came off to me as "cheap" especially compared to X5, so much so that I found the game to be kind of...depressing? It just didn't feel like a mega man game... Turns out, I was right. I didn't realize people hated this game this much, but I legitimately got a headache playing this game.

This feels like it was made with the mentality of a group project, with the people making the game being the dumbasses who slack throughout the whole thing, and the people who made the soundtrack being that one kid who decided to actually put in effort

X7 is worse. And nobody plays X8 That doesn’t mean X8 is bad.

I would never say X6 is excellent, but I think a lot of people exaggerate when criticizing it. It is bad, of course, but calling it one of the worst games ever is too much.

I looked up the donut thing and apparently it's supposed to be a snake biting its tail. But it's so poorly modeled that I thought the claw inside was a steering wheel and that it was a thing someone drives in.

Three things: I like how you did mention Saber Dash Cancel, but you severely underestimate its power, Zero makes many of the bosses completely trivial, and its not from the Z-Buster, but from SDC, which can kill many (though not all) bosses in half the time. Two: you kinda failed to mention the plethora of glitches this game offers. Guard shell technically is supposed to be one of the worst weapons in the game except the weapon is programmed so badly that with it out it increases the power of Saber Dash Csncel. That spinny Z-Saber move? When falling off a platform while doing that move, you can get invincibility, including against the final Boss Sigma, as he spawns platforms in phase 2. There are other glitches in the game but those two make Zero incredibly more broken than you described him as. Three: That bullshit Gate leap of faith is technically possible as Shadow Armor or Unarmored X, but it was not intended, as its due to using special weapons in order to conserve height as you fall in your jump, which makes the jump just barely possible. Does it make it any less bullshit? No, but due to the games shitty programming, you can still make it.

I've never once played another game with so many low points in my entire life. Not one section, boss, or weapon in this game is enjoyable in any way. Its nice to see someone else agrees with me on this, as I've never heard of anyone else hating this game as much as I do.

Absolutely. You know, marathoned the X games again for the first time in a long time. And you won't easily find a bigger fan of the series than me. I am 37. I was alive to behold the release of every Mega Man game ever made, and beat them all. Hell, I can beat the first three X games with surgical precision. But as I step out of four and into 5, I just get this feeling of nausea knowing how they fucked up. The most offensive thing to me was how they removed the concept of collecting individual armor pieces and progressively adding to your strength. They pulled this "collect all four" bullshit because they were too lazy to create the individual sprites for partial armor. And beyond that, I've raged over everything you've mentioned in this review. Every fiber of my being is screaming "HOW DARE HE CRITICIZE THE X SERIES", but I couldn't help but enthusiastically nod at every point. Great review. Terrible game, as much as it pains me to admit it.

I want X6 fans to replay the game and come back when they figure out that nostalgia and good music blinded them.

My man, I would like to apologize for ever defending this game. While I like it, I have a difficult time listening to other's perspectives, and apparently, I have a difficult time judging game design when I personally enjoy it. After replaying the game, while I still... somewhat enjoy it, there's no getting around the fact that it's a terrible game.

Your hatred of this game is on par with my hatred of Metroid prime 3.

I like X6........'s soundtrack. Seriously, most of the themes in X6 are damn cool from the headbanging Blaze Heatnix theme, the pretty calm and yet still rocking Blizzard Wolfang to the Final Countdown-esque Infinity Mijinion theme.

As awful as this game looks, I love the soundtrack. Definitely one of my favorites in the series. Too bad X6 isn't worthy of it. Like, at all.

The story isn't good; it makes no sense. If Zero was alive the whole time then how the hell did Gate find his control chip lying on the ground? This is such a major plot point to have an obvious hole in it.

Ngl, I genuinely enjoyed X6 as I went in knowing the cheat codes, meaning I got the bliss of how hilariously broken the X’s Ultimate and Zero’s Black Armor are on my first run. Both High Max and final Sigma literally died in like a minute to the Ultimate Armor and Black Zero is just fun as hell to play in general. By no means is the game good and it goes into the guilty pleasure category for me, but I fucking loved the Black Zero run barring his Gate stage. Meanwhile I can’t get past the fucking intro stage in X7 because the voice acting and depth perception are so atrocious that I’m legitimately SCARED of the bosses, and X8 was so ‘experimental’ that I don’t even understand it.

I wouldn't have complained by leaving the Japanese voice acting. Of all this game's sins, this is actually kinda good. X4's US release is vastly inferior to the original Japanese, not because of some weeab shit, but because the adaptation was not just done on the cheap, but also on the pathetic. Right off the bat, you can see the US version has lower production value with the physical media. The US booklet is grey scale ffs (the Japanese is full color and with a design that someone put work on, the us layout is column side by side, like you know, someone asked their nephew to make it), the art on the back of the Japanese cd is stylized line work with reflective lines while the NA version is a print that anyone could probably do with ok home equipment back in the day. You can smell the low budget from a mile. Then we all know how bad the NA voice acting is laughable, while the Japanese sounds just like normal anime voice actors (and X doesn't sound like a small girl either), and even the intro was cheapened too (NA: stereotypical instrumental track, not horrible, but farily common JP: an actual song which is actually pretty good). And to add icing on that cheap cake, or better, to remove it, the Japanese version has small audio from the bosses when you meet them. The NA version just cuts them off completely. Now, X4 was itself a great game. The NA version is imo sensible lower in production value than the JP version, just from a technical stand point. Meanwhile, X6 is already a shitty game. Now imagine if they managed to cheapen it up even further? If they managed to lower the overall quality of a game like X4, imagine how further down it would be with shittier VA? No, thanks, I will pass on that.

Although I've never played x6 before, and therefore really can't comment on the content of your review, I'd say that your overall writing isn't that great. You've clearly structured your review around different game elements. Yet, you often get sidetracked and discuss somewhat unrelated topics. Additionally, you often mention elements of the game that are still to be discussed when talking about problematic levels or design. As such, you provide the audience with no clear picture of why the things you discuss are so problematic. Really think about the structure of your review: what is the most natural sequence to introduce different game elements to the audience so that they get a complete picture. Another thing to think about is your argumentation: as of now you ussually argue that things are bad by stating that you don't like them or that it is badly designed. This doesn't make your argument very compelling. We would like to know why you think something is bad, simply stating that it isn't appealing to you, isn't, well, very appealing. Additionally, when you state that a level is or boss is badly designed, give us some detail as to why. For example, when you say that infinity mijinion is poorly designed because he "spawns like a million clones of himself, and a whole bunch of other crap on the screen", we would like to know why that is bad. Is his attack pattern too difficult? are his attacks poorly telegraphed or unfair? Is it that the fight itself is really dull? try to be specific. I hope this helps :)

How bad was Capcom's financial state at when they made X5 and X6? I can see the ideas that the development team were trying to implement but it just seems that there was a lot of discord company wise. And then they try to rectify the lack of polish with the creation of X7 but that turns out to be a damn clusterfuck on its own.
