It really is MEGA R-Type. It's doing it all. High accuracy, extra features, previously exclusive content from prior console ports all together in the same package.. It's a goddamn Bydogeddon!!
Good lord this is absolutely superb. I can't think of a single improvement that can be made to this port. Even the sound- Mega drive sound chip output usually grates on my ears, but this sounds so authentic to the arcade. And look at the speed it's all running at, with no sprite flickering or slowdown. This would have been an absolute system seller back in the early 90's. What an achievement.
It looks so fantastically great! I'm interested to see the inevitable comparison to all previous official releases of the game. That redone music is really slick too! Very Mega!
@@theroboz the music is top notch even more than the visuals in my opinion. FM sound chip for the win this round. The Sega Genesis is practically turning into the Stradivarius of game consoles when it comes to music which can only be revealed in the right hands.
Awesome trailer, awesome work all this time, to the finest details, and lots of hardware pushing tricks. Amazing to see it nearing completion, fingers are crossed to be able to play it next year. Thanks a lot to everyone involved, this is a dream come true for people who love R-Type and the Mega Drive.
And then you will port R-Type II to the Mega Drive. :P Jokes aside that would be an impressive port for anyone to do, especially if you could eliminate all the flicker and slowdown as everything was ramped up considerably. I don't think it would be possible to faithfully pull it off on the Mega Drive with State 3 and Stage 5, even with all the limit breaking stuff Birt Shannon has been pulling off recently.
I don't think stages 3 or 5 would be anything especially different from what the game is already doing elsewhere. Stage 3's battleship is displayed via a tile layer, with all the shootable parts being either sprite overlays or just tiles swapped in VRAM. Stage 5 wasn't anything special in terms of effects, other than the centipedes, but we've already seen this in stage 2, where they were able to pull it off just fine. Stage 4's destructible grid is somewhat tricky, but I'm sure they are editing the tileset in real time to remove the blocks.
I looked at r-type 2 a bit, the main problems I see are way more colors that would need a drastic reduction and a lot of huge sprites that will quickly lead to flicker. There were also some pseudo scale or rotation effects maybe? I need to check again
Excellent work! If possible, someday, do a simple and vague test (not from your port), with some background and sprites, using the Mega Drive's maximum possible resolution (I think it was only used in the Sonic 2 duel and race), please. I also think that dithering should look charming at full resolution. Greetings.
If there was one console that could've done an arcade quality R-Type port, it had to be the genesis. Very surprised Irem never made an official attempt.
You never heard of the PC Engine? For its time, it’s a great port and still the era’s best. The CD version, R-Type Complete, is one of my favorite games all time, and a brilliant port.
@@perrymason9942PC Engine was popular in the US? We're talking about R-Type, one of the most popular Shoot em' ups in the West and you bring in this little console that failed in the US? It makes sense that a lot of people missed a port for the console that destroyed the PC Engine (Turbografx-16) in its first year in the US, that's right, the Sega Genesis. PC Engine is a console for Hent4i addicts, Genesis is a console for chads and it's something that even the Japanese mentioned in magazines, if you don't believe me check it out!!!.😂😂😂
Looks so Wonderful !!!! Why in the world Irem didn't made any R-Type for the Genesis / MD. At least only just a one game? It Exist inside at the Master System but not inside at the Sega's 16-Bit consoles ......
IREM never supported Sega, the Master System port was developed by Compile with the support of SEGA, if you notice IREM supported PC Engine and Super Famicom but Mega Drive not at all, probably because it was not popular in Japan and they surely had exclusive contracts with Nintendo, I don't know but one of the IREM programmers confirmed that they never programmed on a SEGA platform.

@@saturndual32 Not sure what emulators you've been playing, but I'm having a blast with all the games from various consoles I've loaded onto my SNES Mini. It's great to be able to play all these new ports, hacks, and indie/homebrew games there. And the SNES controller is great for most of them too. I've just loaded Xeno Crisis onto it, the Genesis version, so it will be very interesting to see how that plays using the SNES controller, if it works as I would assume. Edit: Just tried the game, and unfortunately the Genesis control options aren't great either way imo. Playing with the 3-button setup is not too good, as you have to keep taking your finger off the fire button, push in the new direction, and then hold the button again to lock it in that direction. And you have to do that every time to change direction. Oof! :-o And the 6-button option is presumably fine and would line up really well with the SNES controllers' diamond-shaped four face button layout, but it's just a faff trying to work out what buttons to set in the emulator to match those on SNES with those on the Genesis and the game to get it all perfect. I'll probably get around to it, but I'm feeling lazy right now. I think it would be better if the SNES version got rom hacked at some point and I could just play that directly on my SNES Mini, as the controls that way will be set up just like Super Smash TV on SNES, and they are brilliant in that game.
@@inceptional sorry but no matter how you slice it: real hardware>emulation And give me the Genesis glorious dpad from the 6 button controller always over the snes flat dpad… I hope you can use a controller with a better dpad on that thing… like this Genesis style 6 button pads with shoulder buttons from 8bit But hey, if emulation is your only choice that’s cool… as long as you have fun
@@saturndual32 The games certainly respond a bit better if you have the real deal, but actually getting a console in great condition, plus a perfect controller that doesn't feel a bit loose and worn, and then purchasing all the games at often grossly inflated prices isn't for most people. And it's not for me. I'm not really a fan of old, worn, second hand stuff to be honest, especially if it's the games and they have any box damage or the manuals are all folded or torn and such, which is typically the case. And then there's having to faff around with finding and using old CRTs too. And the dithering in Genesis games basically doesn't look correct unless you use a Composite connection, but then you have to put up with the worst picture quality I can possibly imagine. Or you can use a better connection like Component or RGB if you have the setup, but then the dithering never looks quite perfect, as it's not longer blended properly with the cleaner signal there. Then there's the consideration of should you get a model 1, where you have to fuss around again getting third party cables just to be able to output stereo to the TV properly. Or do you go for the model 2, which I don't even think does stereo without a physical hardware mod, or the model 3 that's just kinda crap looking and I don't think connects to some of the peripherals or something. And I think some of them have similar issues and faff and fuss when it comes to the likes of RGB if that's your bag too. Nah, for now, I'll take the SNES Mini until a better option for getting the original hardware comes along, like maybe an official re-releases of these consoles and their games or something. And let's just be honest here, the SNES d-pad is leagues beyond the Genesis d-pad. This is why almost no one makes modern controllers that copy the Genesis d-pad and instead most try to get close to the SNES d-pad. It speaks volumes to the objective truth there. And I don't need to buy any expensive additional third party controller(s) this way either. The two standard SNES controllers that come with every SNES Mini are just great with the best-in-class d-pad, the universal at this point diamond layout four face buttons, and the also universal at this point shoulder buttons, along with proper both Start and Select buttons. It's just a really ideal all round choice there imo. For this Mega R-Type game, it's gonna be just awesome playing it on my SNES Mini with the SNES controller and output on my 50" 4K TV. Can't wait to give it a wee go. :) Yeah, I think emulation or maybe clone systems will absolutely be the first and indeed best choice for most people. My SNES Mini is the best console I've purchased in decades; it's been a bit of a revelation to be honest. It's like the best of what made the original great with some conveniences of our modern times, at least for me.
I'm hoping the infinite lives option has been changed so that you aren't invulnerable to bullets, as infinite lives and invulnerability are two different things. It is better for training if you die when hit, as you can work on reducing the number of times you die.
I'd prefer infinite lives and invulnerability to be two separate options. With infinite lives you get a score penalty with each death, and with invulnerability you get a score penalty each time you are hit. But it is your project and it's already a great R-Type port, so I look forward to the full release.
