Today we are setting up and reviewing footage of a Dahua fisheye security camera. It’s a 12mp camera with a 1.98mm lens and given its hefty price and that has a Sony senor and Starvis technology on board. First off, Starvis simply means the camera can produce high quality images in low visible light and with IR light. It’s a back-illuminated sensor and can supposedly capture a wider range of light than a regular sensor. We’ll put that to the test when we install this camera in various locations.
I got mine for $360US but the price can be as high as $1220. Given the high price point, let’s be picky and see if we are getting a flawless end-to-end experience from unboxing to recording day and nighttime footage. Product links are in the description below.
This camera has a huge 1/1.7” CMOS sensor and can deliver video at 25fps @ 12mp or 4000 X 3000 pixels. I can tell already that BlueIris is going to struggle with disk utilization with my 12 cameras, even with “direct to disk” turned on and frame rates lowered.
I review the contents of the contents of the box. There is a CD included but I hope the instructions are clear. Looking at the quick install guide, it’s difficult to understand as it’s written with Google translate. And here we have the camera itself. Now you can definitely feel the quality here. This is where they invested the money. It has a very solid and sturdy metal case and weights just over 2 pounds. Given its low profile and good quality and secure mount this camera is classified as IK10 vandal-resistant. The camera is IP67 weather proof works at -30 degrees Celsius or -22 Fahrenheit which is important to know here in Canada.
I download and install Config Tools allowing me to activate and update the IP address so I can access the device on my computer using Blue Iris. I installing the camera in various test locations to see how the footage looks before installing it permanently. I install it on the awning over my deck, on the front of my house, in my living room and face-up looking at the sky.
Config tools was a challenge to use and once I discovered Smart PSS, it also found its many difficulties in awkward terminology and the menu setup. The firmware on the camera also has some issues and added to my disappointment.
In testing the camera, the daytime footage was fantastic but the nighttime records were of poor quality and my $100 Hikvision cameras from 4 years ago offer a better picture. The mic did work well and the camera proved to be waterproof, but did not handle the frost well as it obstructed the lens.
It’s a nice camera but not worth the crazy price tag.
