Driving a silage truck is something every teenager should have to do, not a nice big mack with ac, but an old 60 some model Chevrolet that only the driver side window rolls down on, no ac, split shift transmission, no brakes to speak of. Along with putting up 15000 bales of wheat straw every summer, loading them by hand on doubled 4 wheel wagons, not with skids steers and bale accumulators. But by hand. One man harvests grain, next man bales it with an open cabbed tractor with inline square baler, dropping them on the ground, with 5 or 6 teenage kids picking em up, and one tough ass man packing them all so tall you'd think those trailers would never get full. Then 2 of you going with the loaded trailers and unloading by hand, no belts, then hand stacking them by hand. Character building stuff right there. Working in tobacco is hard, sweaty, sticky, nasty, dirty, back breaking work. But there's no dust to speak of. We sold out in 93 and I only remember driving my papa's 140 farmall through the fields pulling doubled wagons. I never pulled, topped, plowed, racked any but my whole family before me did and I remember how tired my mom and dad would be every night after pulling tobacco. My grandma and few Mexicans racked it. And I have been involved in it little bit since I was 3 helping others in community. Nothing about it is easy unless you have all the new fancy equipment they have nowadays.

Is that a 984 cat loader? I've ran a 980 in real life quite a lot and I've ALWAYS wanted to run a 984 man. As far as being short on help, get a wagon put it behind chopper, cut a load, unhook, let you're driver haul it, dump it, spread it out and pack it man. My grandaddy is 82 years old, and i swear the man is impatient as hell. We have an old fox 1 row chopper that is duck taped and sheet metal, and cardboard, and pop rivets holding it together. He is tighter then dicks hat band and definitely gets more then his money's worth out of equipment. He will start on a Thursday or Friday, he cannot wait for me and my dad. Its really a 3 man operation. One to chop, 1 to truck it to the silo from the bottom, one to pack it. I swear the man will take the tractor, chopper, and dump wagon to the bottom, then walk over mile back to pack house, get the silage truck, drive it down. The 271 massey Ferguson with the loader is already at the silo. Then he'll chop a load, dump it in truck, then truck it, unload it, and pack it by himself. We raise 15 or so acres of corn every other year to fill the silo for feeding our beef herd in winter. We feed hay one day. Silage next. We have a dirt silo, with a homemade head gate that is suppose to be pushed by forward by the cattle, but it's on dirt so I don't work, so we feed them with a pitch fork and wheel Barrow every other day. Its alot of work but it was worth it. But now we have the tractor with loader so we use it to feed with. Use to borrow my uncle's case to pack with because he was only one with loader on tractor. Now we have the massey with loader and works lot better. On the off year's, we raise corn still, but we pick it with our old ass John deer picker, pick into an old home made metal trailer, then unload with grain shovels, by hand into an old tobacco barn, then hand shovel the ears of corn back into same trailer, and grind it, along with alfalfa hay, and some other ingredients along with minerals, then load into 2 old wooden tobacco trailers, we use to haul tobacco with from field to the bulk barns, before we racked tobacco in the fields. Hey its hard work and little slow but it builds character you know. And also it teaches you how to make money without fancy equipment. I meant 994 btw. I'm so used to running the 980 loader I just said 984 not 994. But she's a beast man. Would love to run one of those one day. 980 is a beast and a half. 994 is double beast man.
