I think that’s an overwhelming trust on a government. Think we need to be open to both arguments. In Mexico, most if not all times, growth and profit is only for those in positions of power. Only time will tell. In hope that it does benefit the people and the country as a whole.

"Growing" like this in 2023 is not actually growing.. This "erect a bunch of 'MODERN' structures" mentality isn't modernity any more. Look at China -destroying their ecosystem to build some ugly concrete roach motels for people to live in, and now they're finding they've got a massive pollution problem - and rapidly declining birth rate, because surprise surprise once people "modernize" by moving to the big city - they want less children. This idea of "modernization" through destructive industrialization doesn't work. It will increase global warming which sucks for Mexico, because it's already unbearably hot in many places.

Nope, this is just about ego and not about tourism. There was no need to build such a thing. Many studies were done decades before for passenger trains. They only found that the only section profitable was the Cancun to Tulum section but warned that the environment cost was going to be huge. When the Lopez run for the presidency, he promised to do a rail loop called "tren Maya" in the Yucatan Peninsula. Conveniently, this train is connected to Lopez's state (Tabasco) and very close to his personal property. There is a law that says that for any government project has to show that it's going to be profitable in order to go ahead but several studies showed that this project as a whole is not profitable. Not to mention that the huge environmental damage. There were many law sues and most ended up in the supreme court because the supreme court was going to against the project, Lopez then declared the project a National Security project. So the sues can't get to the court until someone challenges the National security denomination before the courts. The opposition is doing that but the Supreme Court is busy with many unconstitutional laws that Lopez has instructed through his zoombies in the congress and senate to pass. This is about the stubbornness of the Lopez presidency.

@@garretth8224There is minimum cargo exchange within the peninsula. In fact most of the cargo or trade are conducted in the Gulf of mexico and the Caribbean. Quintana Roo is mostly a tourist state. Yucatan is more industrial than Quintana Roo and uses its ports to trade with the rest of Mexico, the US and the European union. Campeche is an oil state, they don't refine they just ship oil to other states.

The only right thing would be to provide them with financial incentive to not have to do these projects. If you had made a mistake in the past (that mistake being neglection of environmental protection) wouldn't you then try to have people learn from your mistakes?

@@garretth8224 yes that is true but in this project they are considering that and they are building multiple safe passages for wildlife. Again, it appears like the government understands the importance of being ecological friendly and they are trying to be extremely careful to not have a negative impact while still moving forward with development for the local people. The guy who supposedly quit his job is not native to that area, he is already used to the benefits of development and has the luxury to supposedly “quit” his job to go “defend” the ecosystems but the locals hardly have any jobs, running water or other modern services. So easy to complain about development when you are an outsider and you don’t have to live in precarious situations. Let the local people decide, like they already have and let them live in their homeland and still enjoy a decent life! All the corporate media complains about immigration but they also want to keep people enslaved to poverty unless is the rich taking advantage and exploiting their resources!

No, Mexico is about to be denominated a developed country in a few years. This development is not profitable as many studies have shown and it's damaging the environment hugely. Lopez has broken many laws and he knows this that it's why he denominated this project a National Security project so he could bypass the laws. But his denomination is being challenged and it's working through the many courts until it gets to the Supreme Court. Let's hope it gets reverses and the project gets stopped

I disagree with your biases, but I do agree that ALL countries should be able to develop. It really is a matter of staying in the past or moving forward towards the future. Some things are worth the sacrifice (as sacrifice is ultimately losing something for some benefit or the greater good). At the same time, it's obviously important to maintain ecology and history - the former of which, if lost, would have immense flow on effects, everywhere.

And this is not all, Yucatan Peninsula does not have rivers, all it's water are subterranean water interconnected bodies which are polluted by that train construction. Didn't you know that? 1. We didn't know better, climate change wasn't even a concept a century ago. 2. We didn't really care until more recently. Demolishing a city and planting a forest is not the same thing as this. Mexico has the 12th highest gdp in the world… and it grows every year. In some parts you absolutely can live a first world lifestyle, but there is a lot of wealth inequality that needs to be fixed. Just like in the U.S. though, there is wealth inequality everywhere.

I am worried people are starving. People take for granted the have paved streets, homes with no leaks, jobs, electricity, food, water! So because some people that aren’t even Mexican believe or think that it is beneficial to the world that Mexicans live in poverty, that’s fine we should just except it? I think not! You take for granted that you have had these things your whole life you don’t know what these people feel or want. I’d much rather have this train that will provide jobs and opportunities. These historical sights will be here when we’re gone. On the plus side, they didn’t build anything too close to these sites. Actually they’ve found thousands of new Mayan artifacts in the new part of the rail system, not all is new just upgraded the railway was already there.

Yeah, the parts of it that follow the pre-existing road aren’t a terrible problem (other than the traffic caused by the road closures lol) They completely changed the scope of the project without consulting the locals. My family is from Yucatán, and I know firsthand that many of them don’t want the train. I hate all the dumb Americans and Europeans watching this video and just saying “trees shouldn’t stop progress! Infrastructure for the win 🎉” because they don’t know anything about what’s going on 🤦‍♂️
