Holy Moly!!! I FINALLY DID IT! You guys have been asking for a full lesson on Marty Friedman's legendary Megadeth Tornado of Souls (Megadeth) guitar solo for about 4 years, ever since i put up my original (somewhat accurate) cover, and now, on Weekend Wankshop episode 200, you're finally getting it!
Uncle Ben here did an obscenely high amount of homework on this one, using the isolated guitar only track here on youtube plus as much live footage as i could find to deliver you a supremely-accurate cover of this song. In this lesson, you'll learn every single note in this thing (including the legendary impossible ending lick), plus get some insights on Marty Friedman's arpeggio and scale secrets, plus some cool tips and insight on how i transcribe brutally hard and indecipherable licks!
Thank you all for tuning in over the past 200 episodes, it means a ton to me. What do you want to see next on the show?!

The "wtf lick" always blew my mind. It always sounded to me like somebody kicked Marty down a flight of stairs right before he played it, and he just kept playing, and as always, it was brilliant anyway. 😂
@Incog2k6
@Incog2k6 4 года назад
The worst (or best) thing about that part is that Marty improvised it (heck, the entire solo is improvised). Like, how? I couldn't even come up with a part like that if I had time to write down something. The solos in Lucretia and Five Magics are also improvised. Marty is not human.

Luckily (or unluckily) I'm still a few sections away from needing that 24th fret, but hoping with more practice I'll get there one day. My 14 yo daughter plays violin in school orchestra and is learning electric bass on her own. She wandered through the room as i was watching this, stopped, looked up suddenly from her phone, and said, "That's a siiiiiick arpeggio." And then we watched Megadeth live in '92 together for 20 minutes, and she deftly noted, "hey, he didn't do that fast widdly section the same way!" Uncle Ben: bringing families together, one crazy solo at a time. Btw, the wtf descending section always sounded to me directly aped from the chaotic descening lick during the fade out on Mr Crowley -- a chaotic pattern to express chaotic energy that defies meter.

Try Chris Zoupa
@jacobraham1
@jacobraham1 5 лет назад
Escobar and Zoupa play it pretty well but both have slightly weird and almost robotic timing in certain spots, and it seems to take away from the flawless feel and free feeling of Marty Friedman’s timing. Also Escobar added a lot of vibrato, where Marty’s (and Uncle Ben’s) is very subtle, and it gives it more of a controlled sound. But, like I said their covers are good, Uncle Ben’s is a lot closer to what Marty is doing on the album

Yeah, I don't believe that for 1 second. Do you mean the WTF lick? or the whole solo being improvised? Guitarists like to make ridiculous claims to seem like they're geniuses, like Malmsteen saying he never practiced. The solo's very structured in how it builds up progressively, you can clearly see that the arpeggios are thought out and Marty probably spent a good amount of time composing it.

Yes, his current sig only has 22 frets. His first Kelly also had 22 frets, he bought it in 85, and the 2nd he got (1st he got free from jackson due to his endorsement deal with them) from them had 24 frets. That guitar was used to record all the leads for RiP and was also numbered as his #1 stage guitar, even though it was his 2nd jackson guitar. Marty auctioned them off to help Jason Becker, and survivors off a tsunami (or something similar) in Japan. Marty´s webmaster owns both of those Kelly´s.

This is still the single most accurate rendition of the solo on the complete internet. You play this shit better than Marty does post 2000.

Marty never played this solo like on the record. Actually, I prefer the live version.

I'm currently transcribing that solo myself. That's really, really close but not exact. Let me send you my tab. If you want it send me your email address 😉. I'll be posting my interpretation of the solo on my channel soon. Kudos to you for painstakingly figuring out these solos. I know how difficult it can be because I do it myself 😉

I search "tornado of souls solo lesson". I click the first video. First word Ben says: "Finally". And immediately I knew, "this guy gets it." The fact that what followed was the most flawless playing of this solo I have ever seen sealed the deal for me. Now, weeks of pure agony trying to learn this await me.

The WTF lick is the best part (imo) of any of Marty's solos but it almost sounds like a mistake when his tone gets deeper for a moment - is he barring two strings there or did they bump the gain on the recording momentarily? If we get enough views, will Marty comment on it? You should watch the video Kiko put up of himself practicing this and he plays something totally different over that... Even he can't get it. @martyfriedman

It’s been two days now, and my fingers still hurt too much to play because I practiced this so much Edit: It's now been 5 days, and I've gone through 2 E strings because of that 1.5 step bend in the sweepy arpeggio part. Starting to come together though!
