Which is really disingenuous. If a movie deserves a standing ovation, give it one...but no longer than 3 minutes. If you're just happy and honorered to be there, and you thought the movie was "ok" or "not bad", give it a polite clap, because it is Cannes. But if the movie sucked balls then don't do anything, be sincere in your appreciation, don't clap and stand because you want an invite to next years FF.
If you want to be in the movie review business - and I realize this is probably his last film - you have to learn how to pronounce Coppola (hint: it doesn't rhyme with "cola" and the emphasis in on the first syllable, ie COP-ola). He's one of the most important filmmakers of ALL TIME.
If it were made by anybody else it probably would be trashed a lot more, he’s garnered so much respect for his entire career that some feel the need to give him a free pass for his very uneven, self funded passion project.
I've also heard that this movie was a mess, but I've heard critics describe it more as a brilliant phenomenal mess though! 😂 So I still want to see it out of curiosity and judge for myself. After all, I owe it to the legendary Francis Ford Coppola.
Yeah it’s weirdly one of those films that I personally and objectively don’t think is “good” - but I do want others to check it out for themselves. It’s a fascinating watch considering all we know about how long it took for FFC to make it x
I said from the beginning Oscars will only go for one Sci Fi film; therefore Dune 2 will get in but not Megalopolis. Plus the fact that it took 40 years to make and still Coppola couldn’t get a distributor was a huge red flag. The Godfather is my favorite film of all time so some times it sucks to be right
@@LukeHearfieldYou probably think Fury Road is a good movie. I will judge it with My own eyes thank You, but i can't consider the opinion of a zesty lookin dude with a Fallout 4 haircut and a flower shirt too serious 😂
@@schizofrito So you think repeatedly posting and launching personal attacks against an individual who's only voicing his OWN opinion after already having SEEN the film.....somehow gives you validation? At some point you're going to have to learn to get over yourself and understand that not everybody is going to like the same things. You should already know this by now. Don't know why your response is to act so defensive.....as if you're some sort of gate keeping protector bulldog guard for Coppola. Jesus......
Thank you for being honest to your audience Luke. I'm sure it's tempting to laud praise when you're a film critic and you get a chance to go to Cannes and review a movie from an auteur like Coppolla so that the industry sees you as being hip and cool for praising one of their proteges, but having the integrity to go "nah" in that circumstance and remain true to your beliefs and audience is worth far more in my opinion, which is why I value your channel and content.
@@thedudeabides3138 awww thank you so much. This is one of the nicest comments I’ve received all year. You’ve really made my day - so thank you ☺️ much appreciated friend x
Thank you for your review Luke! Appreciate your transparency. I’ve been watching the reactions of Megalopolis from Cannes & it’s been very divided to say the least. I have to be honest too… the only reason my interest was slightly piqued to see this movie was because of Francis Ford Coppola. But I never had this film up the top of my Must See Movies of 2024 list. The trailer also wasn’t very impressive to me. And now seeing the reviews… I’m even less interested. Maybe one day I’ll check it out but I won’t be rushing to see it anytime soon.
My pleasure. It’s a fascinating film to divas with others but it’s by no means “a good movie” but you do kind of marvel at it for how bold and bonkers it is. You think you’ll still watch it even when the recations are this chaotic? X
@@LukeHearfield I’ll definitely still watch it one day but the older I get the more I really have to want to watch films I am eager to see as opposed to watching a film just because. But I trust in your judgement to see Megalopolis once in my life. You haven’t let me down yet. Hehe 😃 Also I do like strange & unusual films. This one sounds like a trip. Lol
I really loved your review...its sad that so less of review is there and even ones present doesn't tell us how movie really is and you described it so well. I AM DEFINATELY MORE CURIOUS especially the talking to character through mic thing. Also bad or good i think the movie requires a chance in theatres just bcs of its originality. Also a very balanced review something i don't see in critics much. Thank you!!
From now on, any 4th wall breaking groundhog-day-repeating and gamer-referencing movie (anything from the-matrix to Truman-show to tron) has to be measured with the actually great GTA-homage that is "Free-Guy".
Hi Luke. Thanks for your review. I'm so curious about this film and I'll probably want to watch it because some scenes gave me that "Caligula" vibe. I do hope it is "all style, no substance" kind of camp. By the way, I was a bit distracted by the tapping foot at the bottom right of the screen in your video 🙂
Loved hearing your thoughts Luke!!! Ive been so curious to see this, though I always expected it to be a mess... maybe not on the level that your describing though. Your quote about spending 120 mil to make something look so cheap, got me 😅 Cant wait for more Cannes reviews!!!
I hate when critics say they respect this film because the director made a movie he wanted to make for himself. As if that makes it good or watchable. You are saying that because you have nothing else to say about this pile of crap.
At the end of the day he made something for others to consume. He self-financed it as well. It’s a passion project for him and yes i don’t think it’s good but i still respect him for making the film that he wanted to make. You don’t have to like the art but you can still respect the artist for trying.
Star Wars wasn't well received? Babylon sure, but S the OG star Wars was a runaway success with critics and audiences. But I see what you're saying, maybe it's been misunderstood and oer time it could become aprreited. we shall see.
If you were to predict which studio is going to distribute this film, which is it going to be? For me I'd probably say either STX Entertainment or OpenRoad.
After watching this I genuinely don’t know which distributor would be willing to put a lot of money behind it for a large American theatrical distribution. The reactions are so polarising. But I’m sure that could entice someone to take a chance on it. It is being discussed a lot (for good and for bad) so there will be people wanting to see it purely out of fascination and curiosity to see if it’s as bad as the first reactions say it is. X
I'm honestly thinking Francis will have to budge on that marketing budget and it'll be one of the big tech companies either Apple, Amazon or Netflix. They have the cash to not give that much of a damn.
Would you honestly give the movie any praise whatsoever if it was made by a nobody.... no, you wouldn't - and it would never see the light of day. Regardless if it's Coppola or not, it should be judged on its own merit. If it's self indulgent tripe that is incoherent and not engaging it shouldn't have received a 10 minutes standing ovation.
I mean the only reason it’s getting as much attention is because of the filmmaker and the talent and the circumstances it took for him to get it made after so long. It is all those things but it’s also fascinating film to discuss with others..
@@АНТОНСМОТРИТФИЛЬМЫ and yeah he’s right, they will clap for ages with pretty much any film in Cannes, after a while the cast and crew just look awkward cause they don’t know what to do with themselves hahaha😂
@@АНТОНСМОТРИТФИЛЬМЫ I know, but that just shows how idiotic the whole thing is. So many amazingly crafted movies slip through the cracks and yet this gets its moment in the sun.
@@LukeHearfield I wasn't having a go at you, simply stating what you also said: if it was made by Barry down the street it'd be thrown in the tip and he'd be burnt at the stake. The double standards annoy me.
Nope, not going to waste my hard earned money for this. You are the third person saying similar things. That’s very lovely of him to make his dream movie, but no thanks.
OMG, I was dying for your review of this movie! Thanks for doing the vid! This, and the trailers I saw, totally remind me of my first reactions after watching Babylon
@@LukeHearfieldyeah again... How can someone who gets invited for free to only write an opinion no one who really knows about cinema would care about reading it or Even consider it, can try to throw shit at Coppola for making something that he payed with his own money, and Made it to himself. Who in his righr mind can actually Take critics for real? I don't Even consider Director's reviews of movies, because sometimes they have shitty taste too, like Tarantino for example, who once said that the movie Crawl was a great movie, i saw it and it was worst than Jack & Jill bro. These culture vultures are only throwin shade at Coppola just because they want they moment to shine off the reflection of a consagrated shining figure of cinema's history. I really don't think at all the movie is Bad, i bet that in a few years, the same that happened to Apocalypse Now or The Shining will occur.
It is wild how inconsistent the vfx are in this film. I believe FFC hired a team for it it in the 90’s and then stayed loyal to them when the film went into production but it’s like the VFX are STILL from the 90’s or an AI generator.
I’ll have to see this movie, because I never miss an Adam Driver movie (which does lead me to see movies I would not otherwise have an interest in) but it sure does not sound like I’m going to like it. Thanks for the forewarning! It’s good to be prepared.
