With the rise of the internet, this character and arguably the whole movie aged so well. Like, I can't even count how many people like Hal I've seen both online and in real life.

I love it when the villain is a goof no one takes seriously and then becomes the biggest threat possible. I wish films had more villains like that.

It's a touch of genius that Hal's first line is mocking Roxanne's writing. It shows that the problem isn't just Roxanne not liking him---he doesn't actually like Roxanne either. He's just infatuated with the fantasy of her.

honestly they did a really amazing job with hal as an antagonist, i genuinely don't know if i'd expect him to actually be the main villain from his goofy early scenes if i were to watch the movie today without knowing the plot

I sorta feel bad for Al since the entire premise behind him was being a nerdy, awkward guy who never really accomplished anything, but overall they really nailed the type of guy he's supposed to be, and how he never really addresses the root of his problems as "he himself". Al might actually be the only main character that through the movie does not learn anything to overcome his personal issues: Metro Man's lack of responsibility during his whole life, Roxanne's judgemental behaviour towards others, and Megamind being too stuck in his past and busy with his antics to ever grow up as a person, everybody in the end becomes a better person except him, or at least he's not shown to.

Hal has all the 7 deadly sins. Lust: He is just a desperate virgin incel that simps for Roxanne, and looks at her with lust, but doesn't care about anything else from her. Gluttony: He's overweight. Sloth: He doesn't do anything to improve his life, and neither makes any effort to be a better person. Greed: He rented a bouncy house and a wedding photographer to try to impress Roxanne just to try and look cooler. Envy: He has envy on Roxanne's partner and Metroman because he can't be like them. Wrath: He gets angry when he gets rejected, and even his anger puts others in danger when he gets his powers. Pride: He's arrogant, and feels superior to others once he gets his powers, and he is a very narcissistic man.

The fact that he hired a wedding photographer for a party he has with a bouncing house in his small apartment I actually wanted to see that if it was in the movie instead of mentioning it

I love how Roxanne's eyes slightly widen upon hearing his creepiness. The first night scene with him still "normal" is probably the moment she realizes how unhealthy and borderline dangerous the situation is.

I just realized: I actually kinda want a sequel to Megamind where Hal learns how to stop being a jerk and a loser. But not in an easy or cliche way, but a realistic one. The story shouldn't be about him finding love or whatever, but more about gaining some self awareness and growth. There are probably a lot of people out there like him, and a lot of times they feel too far gone, but we need a lil bit of hope. That story might be too dark, and I don't know how to make it fun. But there's gotta be a way.

it's a shame. maybe not a romantic relationship, but i could see hal being like the chill, reliable nerdy friend and comic relief sidekick character to roxanne if he went to therapy instead if acting on his possessive, sociopathic creep tendencies.

Hal was too creepy and inappropriate at times that was considered a red flag 🚩 including when he tried to invite Roxanne over in a way that wasn’t cool. Always treat women with respect, care, and always ask her out if she’s interested or do it at a better and appropriate time that would not cause any issues.

After you gain self confidence, you start to not really care if you can get a date or not and you're not as desperate as you were before Before self confidence: "Pleeeaassseee!!! I need a woman!!! After self confidence: "Eh. Who cares if I can't get a date? I'm only doing what I'm doing for myself. If they don't like that, then so be it but I'm gonna continue

rewatching this... i never noticed the amount of body language hal has. every time he tries to flirt, he's very in her face, or when he's trying to get her to go get coffee, he is slow-walking. trying to manipulate her to walk with him. or whenever she tries to get away, he moves with her to try and keep her in one place. maybe not body language per say, but i liked the detail.
