This morning, one of my pupils, young Megan, decided that she needed to improve her planning and also wanted to improve the use of the clutch. I thought it would be a useful video for those preparing for Part 3 and those on a trainee licence.
It is a full lesson demonstrating a lesson where the pupil fully engages in the learning process. Megan identifies the areas she needs to improve, prioritising the most important to her. For reference, bear in mind that up to the point where we are about to move off. The conversation that sets the goals discusses the route and recaps the problem areas in Part 3 would take place before meeting the examiner. Remember they want to see the car moving for forty minutes.
Consider the use made of open questions and listening, which is so important to deliver a client-centred lesson.
Who chose the training area?
Has learning taken place?
How much responsibility did Megan take?
How did I manage the risk on the move?

Hey Daria. Great to hear from you, I remember our sessions too. Particularly the note book that always came out at the start with questions. Hope all is well your end. Take care.

My brain is struggling with how quickly you are on the ball...there is a lot there (which is really gr8 btw) but having had a pupil have a go at me yesterday for asking her a question because she can't concentrate, I am really struggling with getting the balance right

Hi Vikki. Stick with it, good Q and A takes time to master it isn't easy. Some pupils can struggle to listen to questions and drive at the same time. As with everything we do as instructors the approach should always be agreed with the pupil in advance. So that they know what is expected from them and they know what they can expect of you. Questions need to be kept to the goals you are trying to achieve. We need to make sure they are asked in a timely manner so that we don't distract the pupil. However we also need to consider if the pupil is at a level where asking questions is appropriate. Obviously I don't know the level your pupil, mentioned in your comment is at. Hopefully you asked the learner to expand on the comment whilst pulled up at the side of the road. I got the message you sent me the other day and will come back to you regarding sitting in on some of my lessons. I haven't been to good the last few days and not been working. Hope to be better in the next couple of days. Chris
