I’m one of the minority who loves this episode and this series. But I love timey wimey convoluted complicated stuff. And I really, really love River.

I love the series as a whole (and River, of course), but this episode is only okay imo. The whole "all of time at once" thing was just too ridiculous for me, and it has no relation to the show's other depictions of fixed points in time. And of all the loopholes, the Teselecta seemed like a weird choice. Still, I like when other people like it.

Same! I adore it. Don't understand people's dislikes, even after reading them lol. Even that one moment alone: "I can't let you die, without knowing you are loved. By so many and so much (and by no one more than me)" WRECKED me. It was nice seeing Megan so emotional. I sometimes feel like the only one who cried. Says so much about the Doc, about River, about how lovely and vital and important she is in his life. She had an understanding and knowing of him almost no one else does, and still she loves him. Not blind infatuation, not unreachable, simply unconditional. Love them. Adore adore adore that moment. Especially the 'suffer' part when paralleled with that one scene in... it was either the s9 or s10 xmas special. I think it was s9.

Mindbending? - yes Maybe too much packed in? - Sure The Doctor's suit a little too convenient? Possibly. But when the ending comes along we are given yet another chance for these wonderful actors to show their emotional range. We get one more chance for Elliot to giggle like some cold-hearted fiend while his girlfriend and I shed tears on different couches an ocean apart. This ending also wonderfully sets up the ending of the Christmas special, which will once again make me cry like a 13-year-old-girl. (Sorry Meagan, I hope you had tissues)

People don’t like season 6? Why? It’s brilliant. So many great episodes. The impossible astronaut, the doctor’s wife, the girl who waited, a good man goes to war, that awesome cliffhanger at the end of the almost people. I really like the resolution too. It’s clever. The doctor hiding in the teselcta and the question hidden in plain sight. You kind of kick yourself for not seeing both of those coming. I’m with Megan. It’s great.

He marries River because he has run out of options. His initial plan seems to be that everyone including River would think him dead - demonstrated by his initial attempt to grab her and restore Time without telling her whats going on first (quite possibly he did plan to tell her once she was in prison given she isn't actually guilty and it would be his fault she is there) - when this failed he knew she wouldn't easily give him a second chance at it. With Time literally running out he had to get River to let him hold her again to restart Time, but still make Amy and Rory think he was really dead. That meant somehow letting River in on it, without letting her parents, who are standing right there, know. The wedding provided all the excuses he needed for this - a ceremony which involved hand holding and a kiss, and one whch could include a 'secret' whisper between the couple, which as its an alien wedding ceremony, and the protocols of such events, neither Amy nor Rory would question or demand to know what had been said. It was the most expedient way out of the situation whilst achieving all his goals, with only the minor alteration of movng ahead slightly when River found out he wasn't really dead at all. As an amendment to that being a Time lord, and very clever and given all the previous hints to marriage River had given already he probably also instinctively realised this was when that event must take place in River's timeline.
@gaynor1721
@gaynor1721 4 года назад
*Spoilers* You over think too much. The Doctor and River are *not* really married. Alien wedding ceremony or not, there are inconsistencies.
@pettytyrant2720
@pettytyrant2720 4 года назад
@@gaynor1721 SPOILERS Not sure what you mean by inconsitencies. My take on it is that the ceremony as we saw it was genuine but done on the Doctors part solely out of expediency as explained above. But by the end of 12's time and given their years together I'd say he took the matter seriously and meant it.

@@pettytyrant2720 Bit late to the party but I don't think he wanted to hide the fact from Rory/Amy (River eventually tells them after all), but at this point in time (pun intended) they didn't know if the Silence would watch them again. And contrary to the others involved, they might actually know the ceremony involved, but let them pass (as it would lead to the Doctor's fall after all).

@@gaynor1721 you do remember that River told the 9th Doctor his name in the Library to make him trust her, right? he said "there is only one reason I could tell you my name" when she was getting ready to die later on. So, considering all of the 11th avoidance and embarrassment every time someone asked if River Song is his wife, we can easily make an assumption that he thought she was his wife from the very beginning as well. Hence it becomes pretty possible that they actually DID get married at some point after this "wedding", cause what else could he tell her his name for. The Doctor, who doesn't tell it to literally anyone else

Fun Fact: Mark Gatiss was credited in this episode as Rondo Haxton in reference to Rondo Hatton, a journalist/Hollywood B-movie actor from the early 20th century with a growth hormone disorder upon which Mark's make-up was based. So, it's not that ridiculous that Megan would think that's someone's real face.

I like series 7 and the finale was earned. I think one reason this series isn't as well liked as some others is that it feels disjointed.There is an arc that covers the two parts . The thing is that the two parts feel like two mini series instead of one long usual series. The tone shifts dramatically and doesn't feel consistent. We go from the Doctors death arc to a finding Amy arc and that ends part one. Part two is about how the Doctor escapes his own death. I love complicated story lines like this so it doesn't bother me too much, although the tone shift between some episodes does bug me a bit. Great reaction and now only five episodes away from the big one, New York is getting closer.

So, if River changing the timeline cause a complete shutdown of reality because fixed points always have to happen, why didn’t this happen in Waters of Mars? The very strong implication of that episode was that fixed points are guidelines which are not “essential” but are necessary to maintain a recognisable version of reality, but messing with them was the equivalent of breaking the law; the consequences of such an action are imagined and created but nothing would actually happen. So why would saving Bowie Base One not do that but River trying to save the Doctor would?
@tacobowler
@tacobowler 4 года назад
King Edward "Longshanks" I, Hammer of the Scots, Lord of Wales and King of England (first off, great name) I don’t remember completely but I think it was because the main ripples that came from the destruction still happen. It wasn’t the destruction but what the main character did in response to the destruction that was the fixed thing.
@shadaxe
@shadaxe 4 года назад
That's a fair point, but the Mars base was destroyed, and new sources can be wrong, in this case, because of something a source would have no way of getting right. So maybe the Doctor saved her before she killed herself, the first time, and every time. If that's the case, the Doctor's actions maintained a fixed point in time rather than changing one.
@Longshanks1690
@Longshanks1690 4 года назад
@tacobowler But Yuri and Mila (was that her name?) are still alive when they were meant to be dead. Plus, Adelaide’s granddaughter was said to go out into space, as if she was trying to reach her so it’s a pretty big gamble to assume that would be the same when she would be buried on earth. (Yes, it still ends up being the same miraculously but that doesn’t seem to have been the point.) Also, there’s a fairly large gap of time between the Doctor saving her and that. Shouldn’t the destruction of reality have been near instant like it was in this episode?
@lawrencegough
@lawrencegough 4 года назад
The only thing I can say (apart from that Steven and Russell had different ideas!) is that the fixed point was the destruction of Bowie base and/or death of Adelaide. Hey, why not ask why we never see the Reapers again after Father’s Day...we all know there are discontinuities! 😀
@pettytyrant2720

Fixed Points are a consequence of the Web of Time (referenced by the General ) - which the Time Lords created to stabilise the universe and make it orderly, and in doing so they strengthened some natural laws, such as those governing physics and such, and all but eleminated others (including the Force of Magic - which is why ancient creatures, the Beast (Impossible Planet), Carronites (Shakespeare Code), Weeping Angels (Blink), Fenric (Curse of Fenric), and lots more who evolved when the Magic Force was strong, can still access the little remaining, same goes for Time Lords and their telepathic abilities and the Sisterhood of Karn and their elixirs and Eternal Flame (Brain of Morbius). Anyhow, for the Web to remain stable the Fixed Points have to happen. There like the lynchpins in the whole thing. The upside to the Web is stable universe, the downside is if a Fixed Point breaks it collapses the whole thing. The Time Lords of course watched the whole thing from outside ('looking down on the galaxies below' as 10 poetically put it) as they put themselves outside the Web, and so they could prevent and premept any threats to it ( as 10 affirms in Waters of Mars when he says there used to be people who looked after it all and as I think 9 tells Rose in Fathers Day). The difference with Waters of Mars was when she shot herself it didn't break the Fixed Point, so much as bend it, events stayed on course - or from a Time Lord perspective the ramifications of the breaking of that Fixed Point were almost immediatly corrected by events so the Point didn't 'break' the Web. In Wedding we have a created Fixed Point, made out of weaving a narrative about the Doctor's death around a Still Point in Time, making a new Fixed Point in the Web of Time. And given Kovarian's previous, their dodgy TARDIS copy from the Lodger and Impossible Astronaut, they probably didn't really know what they were doing. When River manages to not kill him it completely breaks the Fixed Point as it was specifically created to have only one possible outcome - River shoots the Doctor. Its the only thing that can possibly happen in that moment to fulfill the Point and keep the Web stable. There are no other options for anyone present to 'correct' the Timelines and keep the Web stable. So the result of breaking it was catastrophic, causing the Web to begin to collapse in on that point and moment. Sorry for length, but believe me this is the very short version!

I don't think Series 6 is as disliked as some people make it out to be, I think it's a mostly well liked series but considered somewhat messy in places. I quite like this series, it's about in the middle if I were to rank each series, so not as great as others, but not bad. It's a step down from Series 5 for me, and I'm sure most people hold that opinion as well.
@PaulAndroid
@PaulAndroid 4 года назад
It always seems that people's negative opinions are heard more after the hype of the most recent series has died down, but in that case they're usually a vocal minority. I live in America, and this series and the next was about as popular as "Doctor Who" ever got over here. The same thing happened with Series 9. I heard nothing, but enormous praise for it while it was on, then after several months after it ended it seemed like half the fandom totally hated it.
@lucasdolding6924
@lucasdolding6924 4 года назад
PaulAndroid Yeah, that’s very true that after the hype dies down you get the people who hate it constantly reminding people that they hate it for some reason. Series 9 had always been pretty split between people who absolutely love or absolutely loathe it.
